Is J Street finally getting traction? Brilliant fake AIPAC press release showed up on Al Jazeera and all over CSPAN during Hillary’s speech to the policy conference. We bought it! This just drives the wedge between AIPAC and J Street and gives AIPAC a stinko headline when it’s trying to affirm the special relationship and attack Iran. At TPM, Justin Elliott says settlements aren’t even on AIPAC’s issues page.
Update: Medea Benjamin has contacted us to let us know that Code Pink sent out the release. Here is the announcement the fooled nearly everyone (including us!):

This is delightful, as in denying the statement AIPAC is forced to say openly that they do not call for a settlement freeze, to admit that they are pro-settlement, which the majority of Jews in this country oppose.
This is BDS at its finest, and funniest.

Well Medea Benjamin is probably safe. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if AIPAC sued her, though, for Code Pink’s false flag attack.

I disagree with falsified press releases like this on principle, but in practice, we live in a country where our media is corrupt and untrustworthy. I think perhaps this was the only way to force AIPAC to show its true colors.
Actually the AIPAC turds do this all the time, by telling others what “we say” about whatever given subject. So, we have one shot fired like this from Medea, and ten million from AIPAC and company with all their bullshit. Lets not forget all of the media which always tell people what “anti-Zionism” really is. We should have had in this release that “if we go back on this commitment, we will eats some bugs.”
Bad idea. AIPAC provides enough ammunition on its own without engaging in ‘guerilla’ tactics. If dishonesty and dissembling are to be weapons in this war, AIPAC and its ilk will always win.
They don’t seem to be winning this particular battle.
This battle isn’t over, and it’s the war I’m concerned about. But don’t get me wrong: any egg on AIPAC’s face is usually egg well spent.
Only in US taxpayer money and the blood of US families in the Middle East, and in the US vetoes at the UN where it counts. Nothing to worry about, right?
The sad thing, Mooser, is the Zionist lobby will happily break the “toy” they’ve made out of the US government — if they can’t play with it, no one can.
And the US has passed a critical mass of economic (and perhaps social) decay from which we can no longer backtrack. So sooner or later that UN veto isn’t going to be worth anything to anyone. We’ll be too busy burning dollar bills for heat to figure out who to send to the UN to represent us.

With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveling to the United States to speak at the AIPAC 2010 Policy Conference and meet with President Barack Obama, AIPAC reaffirms the U.S-Israel relationship rooted in mutual strategic interest, shared democratic values, and a commitment to peace in the region. To further solidify this relationship, AIPAC calls on the Netanyahu government to make a conscious effort to move away from actions that create tensions between the two governments and undermine prospects for Israel-Palestine peace. AIPAC therefore calls on the Israeli government to immediately freeze new settlement projects, both in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
AIPAC agrees with Vice President Joe Biden that the Israeli government plan for new housing units in East Jerusalem “undermines the trust that we need right now in order to begin … profitable negotiations.” It also seconds the position of AIPAC keynote speaker Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who said that the U.S. government wants to see a freeze on settlements – “not some settlements, not outposts, not ‘natural growth’ exceptions.”
AIPAC applauds the Israeli government’s recent announcement that it will ease the restrictions on materials allowed into Gaza, especially materials needed for rebuilding the sewage system and buildings destroyed during Operation Cast Lead.
AIPAC believes that an easing of the tensions between the United States and Israel is critical to move forward with the substantive work that needs to be done to thwart Iran’s dangerous pursuit of nuclear weapons, and to move forward in the peace process between Israel and all of her Arab neighbors. It strongly urges Israel to work closely and privately with the Obama administration, in a manner befitting strategic allies, to address a wide range of critical issues, including settlements, the status of East Jerusalem and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“With the good faith gesture of freezing settlements, Israel can generate a new equilibrium in the Middle East that assures,” said AIPAC executive director Howard Kohr.

At last year’s AIPAC, Medea Benjamin climbed up on a chair and started protesting and they hauled her out.
There was some playful talk among my local peace group of getting tickets to attend a local AIPAC event, though mostly just to get the dirt on what they’re telling themselves behind closed doors. Ultimately, though, none of us could bring ourselves to send any money AIPAC’s way.
