A new festival that celebrates cutting-edge film and digital creativity in the North West region will launch next week. Abandon Normal Devices will take place in Liverpool this September.
The festival -- which is currently anticipated to run until 2012 and possibly beyond -- looks at experimentation in digital fields, focusing in particular on non screen-based digital experimentation. The festival also examines the overlap between new cinema and digital modes of distribution.
"Abandon Normal Devices invites us to consider, what are our normal devices? And how might we abandon them?", say the festival organizers.
The festival will take place in Liverpool, September 23-27 2009, and will feature screenings, installations, online projects, public realm interventions, debates, workshops and live events, with a distinctive emphasis on critique and ideas. At the heart of this festival lies a fascination with ideas about social, physical and technological norms with approaches from the playful to the downright provocative.
Featured highlights include: the first UK solo exhibition from Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul; the European premiere exhibition from digital interrogators The Yes Men; the world premiere of Jamie King’s new feature film Dark Fibre, a much-anticipated appearance from Carolee Schneeman and Krzysztof Wodiczko’s return to the UK with a breath-taking outdoor projection.
Abandon Normal Devices is being organized by FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), Liverpool; Cornerhouse, Manchester and folly, Lancaster. The festival forms part of WE PLAY, the Northwest cultural legacy programme for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
