Pyongyang confirms test of sub-launch missile

SEOUL — North Korea said Wednesday that it had test-fired a newly developed ballistic missile from a submarine, in its first such underwater test-launch in two years and one it says will bolster its military’s undersea capabilities.

The test Tuesday was the fifth round of missile launches since September and came as North Korea steps up pressure on Washington and Seoul to abandon what Pyongyang sees as hostile policies such as joint U.S.-South Korea military drills and international sanctions on the North.

Reports: Haitian gang wants $17M ransom

Lengthy talks expected; capital quiet amid strike

A wide-ranging strike in protest of the abductions, violence and lawlessness consuming battered Haiti stretched into a second day Tuesday amid reports that a powerful gang was demanding a $17 million ransom for 16 Americans and a Canadian kidnapped three days ago.

The streets of Haiti’s capital, Portau-Prince, were oddly quiet and largely empty Monday as the protest shuttered businesses, schools and public transportation. Unions and other groups vowed to continue the shutdown.

Brazilian panel set to accuse Bolsonaro of mass homicide

Afghan Taliban’s rise emboldens their counterparts in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — In Pakistan’s rugged tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan, a quiet and persistent warning is circulating: The Taliban are returning.

Pakistan’s own Taliban movement, which had in years past waged a violent campaign against the Islamabad government, has been emboldened by the return to power of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Our View: End gerrymandering with Freedom to Vote Act

The shameful season of the gerrymander is in full bloom as state lawmakers redraw legislative and congressional districts so they can choose their voters rather than the other way around.

Just weeks after the 2020 Census data was released showing the population has shifted and grown, redistricting knives came out.

Texas Republicans carved up the Houston district that House Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has held for three decades, stripping out predominantly Black neighborhoods and potentially forcing her into a primary against another Democratic incumbent.

Taliban give approval for Afghan children to get polio vaccinations

ISTANBUL, Turkey — U.N. agencies are gearing up to vaccinate all of Afghanistan’s children younger than 5 against polio for the first time since 2018, after the Taliban agreed to the campaign, the World Health Organization says.

For the past three years, the Taliban barred U.N.-organized vaccination teams from door-todoor campaigns in parts of Afghanistan under their control, apparently out of suspicion they could be spies for the government or the West. Because of the ban and ongoing fighting, some 3.3 million children over the past three years have not been vaccinated. The Taliban’s reported agreement after becoming the rulers of Afghanistan appeared aimed at showing they are willing to cooperate with international agencies. The Taliban leadership did not confirm its agreement, and Taliban officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Dems to trim plan on tax cheats

I know that you are a strong advocate for tidal power, but this has it’s own problems. The capital costs are huge, this is conceivably the most expensive form of power generation. True you get power twice a day, but the times at which that power is available depend on the tides, maximum power at low and high water, but nothing at slack water, ok if demand matches availability, but many times this won’t be the case. Tidal also has a big environmental impact, the environment isn’t just about carbon and tidal will have a big impact on wildlife. Also has anyone done a study to find out how long a tidal scheme has to run to offset the carbon released in its construction?

Dems to trim plan on tax cheats

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration, bowing to an aggressive lobbying campaign by the banking industry and pushback from Republicans, has agreed to support a far more limited plan for the Internal Revenue Service to try to crack down on tax cheats.

Senate Democrats are expected to roll out a new proposal Tuesday that would narrow the scope of information that banks must provide to the IRS about customer accounts. Under the new plan, banks would be required to provide data on only accounts with total annual deposits or withdrawals worth more than $10,000, rather than the $600 threshold that was initially proposed. The reporting requirement would not apply to payroll deposits for wage and salary earners or to beneficiaries of federal programs such as Social Security.

Pfizer and Its Secret Vaccine Contracts

A report cited leaked documents that show a shift in risk to maximize profits.

ELIZABETH ROBERTSON / Staff File Photo
Empty vials of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The pharmaceutical giant has maintained high secrecy in talks with governments. The researcher who wrote the report said contracts showed the company valued profits over public health issues.

The coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech has proven a success. First to receive emergency use approval in the United States, the Pfizer shot has become the world’s most popular, with 3.5 billion doses purchased. Sales could double in 2022, according to projections.
