NYC Students "Die" On 25th Anniversary Of Bhopal Chemical Disaster

At midnight on December 2nd, 1984, twenty-seven tons of lethal gases leaked from Union Carbide’s pesticide factory in Bhopal, India, immediately killing 8,000 people and poisoning thousands of others. According to Bhopal.net, "There was no warning, none of the plant's safety systems were working. In the city people were sleeping. They woke in darkness to the sound of screams with the gases burning their eyes, noses and mouths. They began retching and coughing up froth streaked with blood. Whole neighborhoods fled in panic, some were trampled, others convulsed and fell dead. People lost control of their bowels and bladders as they ran. Within hours thousands of dead bodies lay in the streets." And the water's still poisoned!

A recent study found some toxins in the groundwater at up to 2,400 times higher than World Health Organization and U.S. EPA guidelines. To mark the 25th anniversary of what is widely considered the worst industrial disaster in history, hundreds of college students staged a "die in" in Union Square park Wednesday, demanding Dow Chemical, which bought Union Carbide in 1999, accept responsibility for the clean up.

"Dow is acting really douchey," said Rocco Ferrer, a part-time participant in political satirists The Yes Men who helped arrange demonstration. "Clean up your mess already and make Bhopal fabulous." Students from Parsons the New School, as part of an all freshman "Laboratory" class, used their bodies in a massive public installation spelling out the words D-O-W in Union Square North. In a statement, Adriane Corwin, an organizer with the Bhopal campaign who has lived and worked in Bhopal, said, "Children are still drinking water full of toxins and carcinogens. That’s the real Human Element," referring to Dow’s marketing campaign.

I hate to be crass but India is really overpopulated and they need at least 10 of these accidents everyday. People there would just be better off.

You're not crass, you're just a wretched human being!

Sometimes honesty in the reality of life can be brutal and is not for the faint of heart.

You sound like my relatives, dude.
"God makes bad things happen to control the population. It's putting the sorry out of misery."
Nice.

The Indian government clearly shares your sentiments. If they were concerned about the mortality of Bhopal residents, they would clean it up themselves or evacuate them to another town rather than wait three decades for a foreign company to do nothing.

Would you say that if it happened to you or your family? I guess the fact that it happened to a bunch of poor brown people makes it okay. Please follow your own advice for population control and jump out of the nearest window.

If that happened to me I don't think I would be able to say anything about it. (You're obviously uneducated) And if I was from India I would be happy to jump out the nearest window.

NY is overpopulated, especially the wall st area, with all those bankers... maybe some planes taking down 2 towers wasn't enough either...

Example FAIL. Most people in India are starving and can't afford 1 onion naan a day. Wall street might be a bunch of crooks but they are not leeches and can support themselves. And how dare you bring up the attack on 9/11.

could use all the money that would have gone to the bankers to give all indians 10 onion naans

more 911s fewer bhopals

i totally understood your sarcasm. some here evidently did not.

Oh, so because they're starving they're leeches and deserve to die, but because the wall St people aren't starving they deserve to live?
Tell you one thing, I bet per capita there are more good people in India who deserve to have a wonderful life than there are in New York's Wall St. bastards.
So if someone brings up the how dare you's of 9/11 against commentary like you put up here - yeah, he dared, and made a valid point.
Serious buddy... you're a piece of shit.

Since Parsons does not have a football team I guess it's appropriate to have the students do some half time educational displays without the need for a stadium.

From ground level it probably looked like a bunch of fraternity and sorority members lounging around after pledge week.

Although I feel for the victims of the disaster, BabyH does have a point with a country that still has a caste system.

"Dow is acting really douchey."

How eloquent.

After looking at the picture again I must say it's not a very good showing for Parsons considering it's an art and design school. I'm not just talking about the poor letter spacing but the whole overall effect is not up to what Pratt students abilities would be in a similar demonstration.

I just love that sixties look.

The NYT had a great Op-Ed on this.

You can find the former Union Carbide CEO chilling in the Hamptons. I hear the gorund water on LI is pretty nasty.

This proves that noxious gas leaks can happen anywhere.

Being an ex-art student, i have to raise a point.

How many toxic chemical art materials do art schools use and dispose of everyday? How many awfully managed factories supply the stuff? Created or formulated by D O W?

Oh.

I would suggest that in your next painting use Cadmium Yellow and Cadmium Orange to get that special glow in your sunsets. Also lead white gives you a purer white than zinc white. Mix them thoroughly and don't wash your hands before eating a nice KFC sit down dinner.

anyway it's good they wrote messages for dow with sidewalk chalk, i'm sure dow will be sure to check them out

anyway can we get the animation of the fey weiners kissing and undressing each other out of the advertisements. AAHQ needs to be the next Bhopal.

Why are they blaming Dow? Didn't Dow buy Union Carbide after the claim had already been settled (however inadequately)?
