Canada target of hoax press releases over climate-change talks

An unknown environmental prankster has launched an elaborate hoax targeting Canada's stance in climate-change negotiations at Copenhagen.

And at least one major news outlet, the Globe and Mail, was briefly taken in by the ruse.

Just after 6:00am local time Monday, a news release was issued by email to reporters in the parliamentary press gallery under Environment Canada letterhead claiming Canada is dramatically revising its carbon emissions targets.

The press release purported to quote Environment Minister Jim Prentice saying the deeper Canadian reductions were a response to developing nations.

A little more than an hour later, a second press release came out, criticizing the first as a fake and again quoting Prentice.

It called the first communique ``the height of cruelty, hypocrisy and immorality.'' (cp,blb)
