Andy Bichlbaum, a member of the Yes Men who posed yesterday as a Chamber of Commerce spokesman and announced that the Chamber would support climate change legislation, appeared on CNN this afternoon to talk about the stunt.
"The point we were trying to make is that the real Chamber of Commerce has a completely backward, troglodytic, in fact, position on climate change. They're behind the rest of the world," Bichlbaum said. "They seem to be working hard to try to make the us the laughingstock of the world."
On Monday, the Yes Men staged a fake press conference announcing that the Chamber would support climate change legislation. The real Chamber is a major opponent of such legislation.
The press conference ended when a real spokesman for the Chamber burst in. Afterwards, Bichlbaum explained the stunt.
"This event is about the only sane thing for the chamber to do, obviously," he said.
Today, Bichlbaum said that if President Obama goes to the international climate change summit in Copenhagen this December without a strong climate change bill, "The U.S. will be behind the rest of the world ... and we'll be dooming the planet."
He said business interests like the Chamber oppose climate change legislation because they're afraid it would hurt business.
"If we don't do something about climate change, and do it fast, there will be no business," he said.
