UPDATE:

The Chamber of Commerce hoax was pulled off by the political performance artist group, The Yes Men, who have posted video as proof.

In taking credit for the prank, the group released the following press release:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a dramatic announcement at the National Press Club today, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reversed its position on climate change policy, and promised to immediately cease lobbying against the Kerry-Boxer bill.

Not.

Within minutes of the announcement, it was revealed that the "Chamber spokesperson" was an impostor, and the press conference an elaborate hoax designed by activists to draw attention to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's fight against public interest on climate change. At the close of the news conference, real Chamber of Commerce spokesperson Eric Wohlschlegel barged into the room visibly rattled, and declared the event a fraud.

The stunt was pulled off by the Yes Men, the activists best known for posing as corporate executives in order to reveal how corporate greed negatively influences public policy. Recently, the Yes Men have focused their attention on the urgent need for action on climate change. Today they sought to reveal--and repeal--relentless corporate lobbying of elected officials aimed at derailing domestic climate legislation and a much-needed global climate accord.

[snip]

At the end of [fake U.S. Chamber representative "Hingo Sembra"] remarks, Eric Wohlschlegel confronted Bichlbaum (video will be posted here: LINK). In the stand-off, both accused the other of being a fraud and disrupting business as usual. The standoff ended with Wohlschlegel dispensing his business card to reporters in the room, and attempting to field a number of pointed questions about the Chamber's real stance on climate legislation currently in Congress, which the real Chamber opposes.

Story continues below

"Maybe that's why Mr. Wohlschlegel was so upset," added Bichlbaum. "He was feeling defensive."

[snip]

The Yes Men will be holding a rally tomorrow at 10:30am on the Capitol lawn, in which they kick off the 350.org Day of Climate Action (www.350.org), by showcasing a fleet of SurvivaBalls (www.survivaball.com), an alternate solution to climate change that protects America's most valuable citizens from the ravages of climate change. The Yes Men received tactical support from the Avaaz Action Factory, a semi-autonomous group of climate activists sponsored by Avaaz.org.

Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued a not-amused statement from Senior Vice President for Communications and Strategy Thomas J. Collamore, in which it accused the pranksters of (shockingly!) not taking the issue of climate change seriously.

"Public relations hoaxes undermine the genuine effort to find solutions on the challenge of climate change. "These irresponsible tactics are a foolish distraction from the serious effort by our nation to reduce greenhouse gases. The U.S. Chamber believes that strong climate legislation is compatible with the goals of improving our economy and creating jobs. We continuously seek opportunities to engage in a constructive dialogue to achieve these goals.

"We will be asking law enforcement authorities to investigate this event. Beyond that, the Chamber will simply continue to focus on a positive vision for getting people back to work and growing our economy."

EARLIER REPORTING:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce was the victim of an massive hoax on Monday in which a group pretending to be the business lobby hosted a fake news conference at the National Press Club announcing a "dramatic" shift in its position on climate change.

The guilty party remains, as of mid-day, undisclosed. But their ruse was elaborate enough to catch several reporters (and apparently the press club itself) off guard. The first inklings that something fishy was going on came at roughly 11:15 am when a email press release was sent out under the Chamber's logo and name announcing that the organization was now "throwing its weight behind strong climate legislation." The name of the Chamber's president was misspelled, and a quick follow-up call to the actual group revealed that no such policy shift had occurred.

Before a correction could be issued, Reuters ran with the story, which was subsequently carried on various news outlet websites as well as covered by business television stations like CNBC.

It turns out, that an email press release was just one component of the hoax. In addition, the fake group managed to secure space at the prestigious National Press Club to host a "press conference" announcing its change in climate change position, according to the real Chamber. Several reporters were in attendance, I'm told, unaware that this was all a big joke.

The event would have gone off without a hitch except for the fact that an actual Chamber spokesman was tipped off to the shenanigans and moved quickly to break it up. A reporter interested in covering what she thought was a real event inadvertently showed up at the Chamber's office on H Street instead of the press club.

"She came here to the Chamber looking for a news conference," explained Eric Wohlschlegel, a spokesman for the real Chamber. "She said she got it wrong that she was going to a Chamber press conference at the press club."

"I said, what press conference are you talking about?" he added. "So I went with over her to check it out and immediately tried to break it up."

A source with indirect knowledge of what transpired at the press club said there was video taken from the event showing Wohlschlegel frantically attempting to alert reporters that they were covering a hoax. The Huffington Post, naturally, is trying to obtain said video.

Still questions remain. Who exactly is behind the staged event? And how could the press club allow this to occur? Talking Points Memo suggests that Avaaz, an international activist group, was behind the prank.

A call to the press club was not immediately returned.

UPDATE: A source close to the infamous pranksters, The Yes Men, claims that the group was behind today's hoax and will be sending along a press release and video shortly. Stay tuned!

Once upon a time the Chamber of Commerce actually mattered. Now I have NO idea of what it is they are supposed to be doing.

Anyone know?

So far they are as usual, shills for big business who want NOTHING to do with making this a better planet to live on, because they all worship at the Altar of The Almighty Dollar.

All of you Global Warming fanatics should discontinue breathing, and achieve true zero impact on your environment. Anything short of that is lip service.

NICE!!!!!!!!

And BTW, in terms of priority, i have to put climate over health care. Minute eccentricities of personal health matter not when one is trying to live in waterworld.

Whether you choose to believe climate change is real or not is irrelevant. It is happening regardless of your political affiliation, lobbying interests, or personal opinions.

A report, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the U.S.", was released in June 2009, and is a summary of the combined conclusions of some of the most respected earth scientists in the world. It also happens to be a collective effort of the major departments and agencies within the United States government that have been documenting cause and effects of climate change for over 10 years: http://www.globalchange.gov/publications/reports/scientific-assessments/us-impacts/download-the-report

The first paragraph of the Executive Summary from the above referenced report: Observations show that warming of the climate is unequivocal. The global warming observed over the past 50 years is due primarily to human-induced emissions of heat-trapping gases. These emissions come mainly from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas), with important contributions from the clearing of forests, agricultural practices, and other activities. Warming over this century is projected to be considerably greater than over the last century. The global average temperature since 1900 has risen by about 1.5ºF. By 2100, it is projected to rise another 2 to 11.5ºF. The U.S. average temperature has risen by a comparable amount and is very likely to rise more than the global average over this century, with some variation from place to place.

The modelers have been wrong and getting wronger (har). Just keep looking in the rear view mirror and you will do just fine. It is your forward vision that is a tad flawed...to say the least.

The HadCRUT3 temperature record shows the world warmed by only 0.07°C (±0.07°C) from 1999-2008. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who have led the global warming circus for the past two decades, had predicted 0.20°C.

Try again.

While the human element of climate change may be up for debate, the fact that change happens, has happened, and will continue to happen is not. Even within the past thousand years, the world's climate has widely varied, being both colder and warmer than it is today, and over prolonged periods of time. The human impact on climate should be researched and needs to be well understood, but so long as the world turns these changes will continue regardless.

In my opinion, next to attaining a fuller understanding of our world's fantastically complex climate and our impact upon it, we should prepare ourselves for both expected and unexpected long-term shifts in the climate patterns and overall habitability of our planet to better insulate ourselves from the negative impact those changes may bring. Even if AGW is a sideshow to you, in the course of its discussion the many frailties of modern civilization have been brought to light and merit further discourse.

Good gravy, it's snowing in the northern hemisphere because that is what happens in late Autumn/early Winter as the Earth nears the perihelion. The effects of global warming might actually intensify winters in the high northern latitudes.

Whoa. Here's the 5:15 right on schedule.

The dullard who has thought about the matter deeply enough to assert: "It's cold. Therefore global warming is false."

What a sad, sad dullard.

Um, dullard? Perhaps you can tell us where in the scientific literature it is suggested that it must be warmer in all places at all times for this theory to be true.

Hint, dullard. It is supposed to get colder in some places.

Oh come on. Haven't we had enough of that silliness? You can't be so ignorant that you don't know that the average global increase in temperature from one year to the next is too small to measure by looking at the local weather outside your window, and that it may not increase in all regions at once. Nor can you be so ignorant that you don't know global warming is a fact - it is not a theory. Just go to NASA and check out the trend, look at their graph. What is a theory is why it is happening, and how much, if not all of it, is due to greenhouse gas emissions. But the evidence is overwhelming in support of the theory.

So why do you deliberately distort the facts with nonsense like what the temperature is today, when a cold front goes through you area? Don't you have any regard for facts and evidence? What good is your ideology if reality contradicts it? What's the point?

The EARTH's POLES are shifting or Magnetic Fields are shifting!

Anyone who has a basic knowledge of Electricity can prove it for themselves:

Why are the whales beaching themselves more increasingly?
Did you know whales use sonar...

Whats with the many earthquakes? FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It is of my opinion that "MAN or MANKIND" only speeds or slows this natural occuring process which has happened on the EARTH several times over MINUS THE 6 BILLION PEOPLE .

PS. What would be the impact of such a change on the earth's surface?
