Statement of Beyond Coal Campaign Director Mary Anne Hitt, in response to the Yes Men prank launching fake “Coal Cares” website from Peabody Coal

Today, a website reported to be from Peabody Coal , called "Coal Cares" www.coalcares.org, announced that the company would offer reimbursement vouchers to any family of a child with asthma living near a coal-fired power plant. The website was recently revealed to be a prank by The Yes Men. Mary Anne Hitt responds:

“Today’s prank from the Yes Men may have been a fake, but it drew attention to a very real issue. Pollution from coal plants is making kids sick, triggering asthma attacks and more. Coal pollution causes over 12,000 visits to the emergency room each year – and over $100 billion in health costs. Low-income families are struggling to pay health care bills for their kids, while polluters like Peabody should be paying for the mess they create. It's clear that, well, coal doesn’t care. Peabody’s response today showed that the company is not planning to help the families that are bearing the burden of the pollution they’re creating. While this prank may have been satirical, the real effects of coal pollution on kids with asthma is not funny. This is yet another reminder that we need to transition to cleaner sources of energy like wind and solar that don't make people sick."
