Toyota Unveils AI Assistant That Reduces the Environmental Impacts of Driving

Toyota Research Institute has introduced a AI "eco-copilot" yesterday morning that will assist drivers in lowering their environmental impact. This software is called Electra, and is a Large Language Model (LLM) which is the same technology that is seen in other software such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard. These models essentially analyze vast amounts of text data to determine how to speak (type) like a human, which is then connected to a server system with roadway conditions, fuel efficiency, and global and local environmental factors to make each trip more efficient, safe, and sustainable. This is one of the first instances of an automotive company utilizing LLM's to create a better and more unique customer experience.

This technology was just unveiled this morning and is an experiment from an OEM into how they can use LLM's to create value and in this case specifically lower emissions. This LLM has been trained on extensive automotive and climate data that gives her a deep understanding of these complex systems, in order to maintain the fuel-powered driving experience while also contributing to ecological awareness.

Today, on January 18, TRI CEO Gill Pratt and Chief Developer Terry Wheeler will take questions at the Washington, DC Auto Show's Public Policy Day.

The LLM periodically connects to the internet for up-to-the-moment information, and learns through repeated user interactions how to formulate suggestions most appropriate for each driver.

Toyota drivers that are interested in this new software can already download the voice-enabled Electra as a firmware update if they are using newer Toyota vehicles. If a customer needs assistance in this process, Toyota says they can contact their nearest Toyota dealership to speak with representatives.
