| Campaign
group People and Planet has organised a series of events including
talks by speakers such as Shiona Baird, Dundee-based Green Party MSP,
and John McAllion on behalf of Oxfam Scotland, and there will be
screenings of films about trade justice and climate change.
The week-long programme will culminate with a demonstration outside the
Tower Building a week on Friday where protesters are asked to wear an
item of red clothing all day in a bid to engage more students in
voicing against the G8 summit and encourage them to become involved in
other peaceful protests nearer July.
World-renowned liberal intellectual Noam Chomsky will deliver a talk
entitled ‘The Fateful Triangle: The US, Israel & The Palestinians,
via a live video link from a seminar in Edinburgh on Tuesday.
Filmographer Mike Bonanno will also speak at the trade justice event
held in the Tower Building next Wednesday evening prior to the
screening of his comedic documentary, The Yes Men.
The film charts a small group of prankster activists that gain
world-wide notoriety for impersonating the World Trade Organisation on
TV and at business conferences around the globe.
Cat Lee, president of People and Planet said, “We hope it will raise
student awareness and get students involved in showing their strength
of feeling against G8.
“It will all be peaceful but it will hopefully encourage people to stand up and say something.
“We have had such a great response from people, and in particular speakers that we have approached and have agreed to take part.
“Previously, everything we have organised has been campus-based, such
as recycling campaigns, and we had a campus clean-up, but we felt this
is a huge event that is so close to Dundee and it was an opportunity to
show our opinion of it,” explained the third year art student.
“It’s a way of telling students what G8 is all about and raising their
awareness and knowledge of it and hopefully if they join us for some of
the events next week then they will join in with some of the bigger
demonstrations being organised against G8 nearer the time of the
summit.”
Anyone can attend any of the events by turning up at the door. |
