The entire premise of the film revolves around a group of pranksters called The Yes Men who travels around the world impersonating members of the World Trade Organization. What started out as a practical joke quickly evolved into satire. Andy and Mike are the two main individuals who formulate and execute their practical jokes. Andy and Mike are definitely not for globalization and free trade. The whole joke begins when The Yes Men creates a website that basically looks like the WTO's website, not thinking that they would be taken remotely seriously. What happens from there all snowballs and quickly becomes a long-running Punk'd segment. It is non-stop laughs when Andy and Dick lectures at a university on the idea of recycling food in third world countries. That was probably my most personal favorite segment of the film. The college students' reactions were absolutely funny. The first segment where the pair travels to Europe and Andy dons on a gold suit with a huge phallus-looking device was equally funny. I enjoyed "The Yes Men" and the film reaffirms my idealogies on globalization and free trade. We need more people like The Yes Men to throw a monkey wrench into globalization and the WTO. Having followed their past antics, I was very excited to watch a funny, creative and thought-provoking movie. Unfortunately, this isn't it. Jacques Servin (playing Andy Bichlbaum) is actually a former programmer for Maxis. Andy is probably best known for inserted some code into a Maxis game that at certain times would show two men kissing. Igor Vamos(playing Mike Bonanno) is actually an Associate Professor of Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The movie consists of watching Jacque and Igor plan and execute three different pranks. It's pretty slow in places as the planning for the pranks goes on and on. Mostly it's them and their associates talking through what they want to happen. The actual pranks aren't that outrageous and certainly aren't as funny as the stuff that goes on in Jackass. There's no tension in the movie as the two never seem to be in danger of getting caught despite their misrepresentation as to their identity and their goofy presentations to unsuspecting corporate dupes. The sound is also pretty bad in places, but that's probably the nature of an underfunded documentary. If you're thinking of buying this movie because you believe it's in the vein of Michael Moore's work, don't. It doesn't hold a candle to recent political documentaries. Lewis "dukefan" * (Virginia Beach, VA United States) - See all my reviews This film falls very flat for so many different reasons. First it bills itself as being humorous, but is rarely funny and most of the time is spent on boring dialogue with boring people. The second problem I have is the fact that the yes men are not very likable people. Most of the time when you are watching a film with anti-heroes, you want to dislike what they do, but like them. In this case what they do is stupid, and they are not likable. I use the word stupid here because there main "pranks" consist of ideas an 11 year old boy would think of and think was funny. Phallic symbols, fesces, etc. I felt like the potential these characters had in making any real change was lost in there overall immaturity and lack of vision. If this is the best the liberals have to offer, it is no wonder they are in retreat, and there ideas are being rejected by Americans. I also thought the documentary was poorly filmed and edited. Overall I would say all liberals should watch this film if for no other reason then to decrease there productivity for 2 hours. Was this review helpful to you? That was it. The rest of it was fairly stupid. It seems all their time was spent developing over the top pranks and very little thought was given to the content of what they were saying. I've seen a lot of comments that you can "learn" something from this. I suppose that is true, but what you're "learning" is 2+2=5: it's gibberish; you're not learning anything about the WTO. One of the first big jokes centers around a presentation made in Finland about a ridiculous phallic employee monitoring device. I suppose we were supposed to find humor in the fact that the Finns failed to react. I think it showed more about the ignorance and stupidity of the Yes Men than the audience. Even if they hadn't pulled out the giant penis contraption, I'm sure the audience wouldn't have asked any questions about the WTO's plan to monitor employees. The WTO has absolutely nothing to do with employees in any conceivable way. No doubt the audience knew this. And, it would be fairly typical for a group of Europeans to remain quiet about an American making an a** of himself in public. The most frustrating thing I found was that all the pranks that were meant to satire the WTO missed the mark completely. The Yes Men seemed to be completely uninformed about what the WTO does. Not one of their pranks came remotely close to addressing anything about the WTO. I'm not sure how you can satirize something if you don't understand it. It would be sort of like making "This is Spinal Tap" based upon lives of circus performers. The WTO doesn't become involved in individual corporations, like McDonald's (obviously the college kids didn't know this). So, while the idea of reconstituted feces being sold as food may be slightly amusing, it's irrelevant to the operations of the WTO, which seems more than a bit problematic if you're trying to poke fun at the them. In general, it's pretty much run-of-the-mill uninformed "arguments" you usually hear from people that denounce organizations like the World Bank or IMF with some pranks thrown in to entertain. Knee jerk liberalism with a twist, in other words. Which in my book, is equally as asinine as those that buy whatever FOX News or W is selling. On the plus side, if you don't know anything about the WTO or other cultures, you might find this amusing -the pranks are well done. But, if you're looking for insightful satire on the WTO, you will not find it here. Was this review helpful to you? Bracken * (Latham, NY USA) - See all my reviews Fair warning: This is a movie made by liberals, and will likely be enjoyed more by left leaning individuals. I went to see this documentary after seeing an exhibit at MASSMOCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) entitled, "Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere", at which I saw first hand the famous gold lame leisure suit. The film takes you on a journey into the filmmakers' 'image correction' involvation hilarious, clever, and bizarre impersonations and stunts. The Yes Men are most famous for their impersonation of and eventual staged disbanding of the WTO. They attend a conference in Finland as representatives from the organization and also appear on MSNBC Europe. These guys have balls, and aren't afraid to stir things up. I laughed so hard my sides hurt. Come on... They use the names, "Granwyth Hulatberi" and "Hany Hardy Unruh". I highly recommend this movie, especially to anyone critical of big business, immoral/faceless corporations, and anyone who likes practical jokes. I've heard The Yes Men called the socially conscious version of MTV's Jackass, and that may not be far off base. You'll laugh in admiration. Was this review helpful to you?
