Vimpelcom Acquires Two Uzbek Mobile Carriers (VIP, MBT)
In the race to acquire mobile assets in the Former Soviet Union, Reuters reports that Vimpelcom (VIP) announced its acquisition of two Uzbek mobile carriers, Buztel and Unitel. Vimpelcom shelled out $60 million for Buztel plus $2.4 million of debt and $200 million plus $13.4 million of debt for Unitel. Russia’s second largest mobile company, Vimpelcom’s entry into the Uzbek market exposes the company to 25 million additional people with a mobile penetration rate of only 4.5% at the end of 2005 according to Reuters. In a company press release Vimpelcom CEO Alexander Izosimov said:
This is Vimpelcom’s second major acquisition in three weeks. SEVENTIES teen idol Leif Garrett has been arrested and jailed for investigation of narcotics possession and not having a subway ticket, officials said. Garrett, 44, was arrested by sheriff's deputies on the platform of the Pershing Square Red Line station in downtown Los Angeles for allegedly not having a ticket to ride the train. Deputies during a subsequent search allegedly found suspected narcotics on the musician-actor, officials said. Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, said Garrett was being held without bail because he had allegedly violated the terms of his probation for a previous offence. He pleaded guilty in March to attempted possession of cocaine-based narcotics and was placed on probation, Ms Gibbons said. A judge last month issued a bench warrant for his arrest for an unspecified reason, she said. An email sent to a spokeswoman listed on Garrett's website was not immediately returned. Garrett has appeared in three dozen films, mostly in the 1970s and 1980s, and has released 10 music albums.
THE Rolling Stones could stage the first rock concert at Melbourne's Flemington racetrack. Promoter Paul Dainty has asked Flemington officials if the rock legends can play to a crowd of 30,000 in April. A Victoria Racing Club spokesman confirmed talks were being held with Dainty and the Stones. "We would be guided by them as to what they require," he said. "Whether or not the Stones opt for Flemington depends on whether we can fulfill what those requirements are." On
their last visit in 2003, the Stones played at Rod Laver Arena but
their 1973 tour included shows at Randwick, Kooyong and the WACA. But the Stones' authoritative European fansite, iorr.org, yesterday listed Flemington as the rumoured venue for an April show. That information is said to be confirmed by Stones insiders. The fansite suggests the Stones will visit Wellington, NZ, on April 8, before stops in Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne. The tour's Pacific Rim leg opens in Tokyo on March 22. Flemington's grandstand capacity is 24,000 people. From news.com.au
Michael J. Fox says that acting for him, these days, is "like being a right-handed painter and being forced to paint with your left hand." "You go, 'Yeah, I'm artistic, but the lines aren't straight anymore. I have creativity, but I'm not staying within the lines'." Since quitting acting full-time in 2000 because of the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease, first diagnosed in 1991 but not revealed to the public until 1998, the Family Ties and Spin City star has only occasionally acted on TV. In 2001 he returned for several guest appearances as Deputy Mayor Michael Flaherty in US ABC's Spin City, and in 2004 guest starred as a surgeon with obsessive-compulsive disorder on two episodes of NBC's Scrubs. Now the 44-year-old Fox guest stars in three (and a bit) episodes of ABC's Boston Legal. He plays a business tycoon, Daniel Post, a cancer sufferer who hires the notorious legal firm Crane, Poole and Schmidt to defend him. Post's been sued for corrupting a study for a new cancer-fighting drug by using his insider clout to ensure he was given the non-placebo. Amid the court case he becomes romantically entangled with his attorney, Denise Bauer (Julie Bowen.) Fox's first episode The Cancer Man Can, has just aired. His story arc concludes on February 7. The producers of Boston Legal knew since last season of Fox's interest in the show, but it wasn't until now that a suitable role came up. Executive producer Bill D'Elia says the actor was "number one on a list of one," because "the character was someone that had to have irresistible charm." "It was kismet - a combination of several events occurring to create perfect karma," says D'Elia, delighted that Fox signed on for the David E. Kelley series, which "often creates these spicy roles" for guest stars. Fox says he is a fan of Boston Legal for a number of reasons, including its "so smart and so funny take" on ethical and moral issues. He also likes the way the show understands the complexities of human nature and that it is not afraid to recognise that "sometimes people are likable and they are corrupted, and sometimes they are incorruptible, but kind of off-putting." He particularly enjoyed working on Post's brief encounter with Denny Crane, the most notorious of the ethically challenged lawyers, played by William Shatner, a "fellow Canadian." "I was really pleasantly blown away by him. First of all Denny Crane, is, I think, one of the great creations of television in the 21st century ... and then there's Shatner's artistry, which I think is a lot misunderstood," Fox says, during a phone interview from New York. Fox - once the cute young Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy of feature films - says, "What I loved was being part of the creative process again. Something as simple as being in a night shoot and smelling the smell of carbon lights in the cold air. 'Wow, the smell of the grease paint!' It was nice, and nice being involved with other actors." Because of the Parkinson's disease, Fox says he "can't show up with a game plan." He expresses sympathy and understanding for veteran showman, Dick Clark, who, though not fully recovered from a debilitating stroke, had gamely co-hosted ABC's New Year's Rockin' Eve. "I am not in such a bad position as he, just given the nature of our separate challenges, but I can see what he was going for, and I felt bad for him that he's gotten such a mixed reaction," says Fox. Because Fox doesn't know how extreme the symptoms of his illness will be on any given day, he had to wing it in suggesting Post's own health problems. "I just show up and do what I can do, and stay true to the emotional arc of the character." Fox, who won three Emmys for portraying Alex Keaton on Family Ties and a fourth for playing Flaherty on Spin City, says he loved it that Boston Legal provided "the chance to do one those courtroom speeches - a soliloquy in front of the judge - which in my long and assorted career I've never done. It was so much fun." Fun though it was, he admits it was physically "pretty taxing," and he doesn't plan to return to acting full-time. Instead, he says, he's always "finding better things to do," particularly spending as much time as possible with his four kids and wife, Tracy Pollan. He also devotes himself to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, founded in 2000, which has already raised millions in hopes of finding a cure. Additionally, he's working on a book, a "kind of follow-up" to his memoir Lucky Man. It's theme? "I'm exploring the idea of optimism in all it's forms ... What is optimism all about? It's kind of something I've been playing with," he said.
X Files creator Chris Carter has sued 20th Century Fox television for breach of contract of his hit show, the Hollywood Reporter reports. Carter filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court in December, the trade paper said on Tuesday. The lawsuit claims that 20th Century Fox reneged on previous agreements, refusing to pay Carter an original profit deal or later cable advance. Carter brought the case through his production company, Ten Thirteen, seeking unspecified damages. Telephone messages left at his lawyer's Los Angeles office and at 20th Century Fox television were not returned. Carter said that in 1998 he made an agreement with 20th Century Fox affiliate Fox Broadcasting to give him a "profit guarantee" for a sixth and seventh season of the X Files. Negotiations for a ninth season led to Carter urging 20th Century Fox to cancel the show's domestic cable deal for repeat rights with the FX network. Carter's suit claims the agreement with FX was handed over to networks USA and TNT. The suit also alleges Carter negotiated for a cable advance equal to 25 per cent of the gross licence fee paid to 20th Century Fox in excess of $300,000 an episode. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Carter said in 2001 that 20th Century Fox asked him to reduce the cable advance because it would result in a benefit too large for him. From smh.com.au

DIRTY Dancing star Patrick Swayze is writing a movie based in Australia. "I'm looking to shoot a movie in Australia," Swayze said. "You've got to look outside of Hollywood if you want to find people with passion. "I've actually got an idea for this friendship that happens with a couple of Australian natives and an Australian guy and an American guy." Swayze, best known for his roles in the blockbuster hits Dirty Dancing and Ghost, has visited Australia many times. "I love it there. I love all of Australia," he said in an interview to promote his latest film, the black British comedy Keeping Mum. Swayze, 53, is moving into film production with his own company. Keeping Mum -- co-starring Rowan Atkinson and Kristin Scott Thomas -- opens in Australia next week. From heraldsun.com.au

Contextual buttons
Confusion with context buttons ... "I have noticed a trend in virtual interfaces that exploits their ephemeral nature, where a single button is used today where two buttons used to be used in the past. The button label is used to both clear a state of the system and the action the button can do. Who else finds they pause slightly in these contexts even after becoming “experts†in these systems? Of course I’m going to use the covetted champ of design, the iPod, and critique it. I mean it is so easy to nitpick “perfection†b/c it gives us clear lines, with the distractions of too many interrelated mistakes. So here is the mini view of iTunes while playing a song:" continued ... (Via Synaptic Burn)

appeal on behalf of the mari people!
APPEAL ON BEHALF OF THE MARI PEOPLEWe the representatives and friends of the Finno-Ugric peoples of the world call on the Russian authorities at all levels to take immediate steps to end the attacks on members of the democratic opposition in the Republic of Mari El. We urge international human rights organizations to join us in this cause. In recent months, the local government of Mari El has done nothing to stop the rising tide of discrimination and attacks against the Mari people, thus creating the impression that it supports or may even be behind them. We note with regret that the authorities have done nothing to identify those who earlier this month attacked Vladimir Kozlov, editor-in-chief of the Finno-Ugric newspaper Kudo+Kodu and head of the all-Russian movement of the Mari people, Mer Kanash, beating him nearly to death. The
Mari people are an important part of the Finno-Ugric world, and this
summer they are scheduled to host the next world congress of
Finno-Ugric studies. Consequently, it is especially important now that
the Russian authorities in Moscow and in Mari El do everything possible
to end the abuse of the rights of the Maris. http://www.ugri.info/mari/ |

2005 - The Year of the Tag
In an interesting synopsis, Tagsonomy reports on “The Year in Tags” with a review of the expansion and development of tags in blogs, search engines, and more.
Highlights of tags over the past year:
Tags have come a long way in the past 12 months. Rumors were flying around early in the year that Yahoo was after Technorati, which created quite the backlash, so it was surprising that the announcement of the purchase of del.icio.us by Yahoo, rumored to be USD $30 million, a hefty chunk of change for a brand new concept, was a minor upset in the blogging world now accustomed to tags and buyouts. So tags are with us and I’ll be having a series of articles about tagging to help you understand more about how it works and how to use them better. To help get you started, here is a review of recent posts I’ve written on tagging:

Pilot the Morning Fall
Well,
I guess bloggin' was just not enough for me. I've decided to
construct a music label as well. Why not? I mean, I put up
songs by artists and labels I respect, but why not put up music by 4F friends? Visit 4F Records. I present to you a new ep by Farhad Parsa and Joel Arquillos (me) who create music under the name Pilot the Morning Fall. Here's how we rationalize it: At a time when garage space is at a premium and internet space is at an all time low, it's easy to understand why musicians like Pilot the Morning Fall prefer the rental rates of online digital space. Here's how it works: Somehow, in between Farhad's life as a photographer, film maker and composer, he sits down with his guitar, keyboard, dulcimer, stuffed rabbit and lays down some dirty tracks. He then e-mails them to Joel who has to stop teaching his high school students to listen. Joel usually digs it and rushes home on his bicycle and loads the tracks onto his laptop, opens up MS Word and starts verbalizing his vocalizations. After a few hours of this he begins to create his own vocal tracks (he loves adding wah-wah guitar to everything, but Farhad usually deletes it). Oh, and most importantly, we talked the amazing Grady McFerrin into creating the beautiful album cover you see above. Thanks Grady! Check out these samples: Pilot the Morning Fall : June Pilot the Morning Fall : December here. |

Get Rich Quick! Go Freelance! Successful Entrepreneur! NOT!
Want to make money with your blogs? Want to have the public racing to your blog to find out what you are going to say next? Want to live in a big home with lots of electronic toys and know that you don’t have to worry about your kid’s college bills? Want fame and popparatzi standing outside of your home? Want to ring the bell on Wall Street? If you become a successful entrepreneur and go freelance, there may be no end to all you can do, accomplish, create, and make. You can make the world a better place, make yourself happier, or just make yourself richer. Are you up to it? Do you have what it takes? Are you willing to jump off that cliff? In an interesting and very well described position, Business Pundit describes “Why I Quit Entrepreneurship and Got a Real Job and what I learned from the experience” in a way that should help you determine whether or not you want to go freelance and entrepreneurial and try to get rich quick.
A very critical point also brought up is that if you want to be successful in an industry, make sure you know people in the industry. And not just any old someone in the industry, the key buyers, movers, and shakers that you can use to help you make your business a success. A couple point snot brought up that I think is important is mentoring and listening. If you are new to freelancing and entrepreneurship, then you need to have one or more advisers you can consult for advice, opinion, and friendship. These need to be people you look up to and respect, the kind of business people and personalities you want to emulate. Follow their examples and leads to help you stay on the right track, and if they take you to task because you screwed up, shut up and listen. Listening is very important. A lot of get-rich-quick wannabes think they are the expert and so they do all the talking, trying to prove the world that they are indeed the experts, whether or not this is reality. Get humble and learn to listen. Listen to what others are saying in the industry, listen to your customers, listen to your competitors, listen and learn from what you hear as it may help you make the next decision better and stronger than blindly going forth uninformed. And remember, no business, blogging or otherwise, is a success without a strong plan and road map. Without a clear path, you will stumble around, and success, if it comes, will be by sheer luck more than determination, and the odds are that it won’t last. If you do want to get rich quick by becoming an entrepreneurial freelancer, read this article to get a much better and realistic perspective on what it really takes. Then bring your parachute with you when you jump of the cliff. Site Search Tags: rich, money, success, freelance, entrepreneur, business, successful

Still embarrassed 16 years later
WFY: Lots of cities have events that they can never, rightly or wrongly, completely live down. Cleveland's river caught on fire, JFK was assassinated in Dallas, and Philadelphia had the MOVE bombing and they booed Santa Claus. The District's great shame happened sixteen years ago tonight: Mayor Marion Barry's arrest for smoking crack (The Post) and subsequent prison sentence reflect the lowest point in the modern history of the city. Despite that, Barry has been elected to public office three times since then. He is currently the Ward 8 councilman, but continues to have personal problems. When will Barry or his constituents say enough is enough? Comments on this Entry: |

Wedding Crashers
rev. 1.00 I've been scared shitless about Wedding Crashers all the time, I kept avoiding it when it screened in the theatres and I even kept pushing it further back once it hit the dvd marked. Why? Because the storyline sounded very shallow and boring, also I am a little afraid of Owen Wilson. Looking at the IMDB rating of 7.3 at 21,388 votes a couple of days ago made me reconsider and push it up a few places in the to-watch stack. So yesterday, after I had seen The Forgotten for a second time as my girlfriend didn't knew it, we also found the time to see 'Wedding Crashers'.I have to admit that I was pretty surprised about it after I had seen the first 30 minutes. It actually was pretty funny and the storyline turned out quite different than I thought. The trailer always semed to me like 'Wedding Crashers' would be a movie about two guys that attend to one wedding after another to pick up girls, which isn't correct. There is a 5 minute time warp in which the characters get introduced, in those 5 minutes they crash about a dozen weddings, but after that the movie is mainly about crashing one specific wedding - one wedding at which one of them actually falls in love. 'Wedding Crashers' is more about a romance movie than anything else and that's something I'd never have expected. It's obviously funny aswell, but it has something you can call a storyline. Sadly it doesn't manage to maintain the strength of the first 50 minutes throughout the whole movie. The most important thing to notice on the weak side is that it's way to long. The last 30 to 40 minutes could have been cut easily and did nothing but hurt the movie. There is no reason for any comedy or light romance to be more than 90 to 100 minutes and this one is 120 (there is even an uncut version that has 130). Other than that I don't have any too bad things to say about it. Surprisingly Wilson did alright and I enjoyed the roles of Vince Vaughn and Christopher Walken. I even thought that the role of Rachel McAddams was an absolutely wonderful one. She contributed a lot to the success of the movie and I'm not only saying that because I thought she looked absolutely gorgeous. I think I am going to give 'Wedding Crashers' a 4. This is a little tough I have to admit, but the movie isn't very special and the overtime does make it a little annoying. I also thought that with the movie having such a strong touch of romance, there wasn't enough emotions between McAddams and Wilson. I really don't think that this is a movie not to be missed, there are plenty of better ones out there and I don't have the slightest clue where the 7.3 at IMDB comes from. |

Brutal Deluxe: 2005 Week 19: Divisional Playoffs
34.4MB 64kbps Stereo MP3 1h 15m 09s (Courtesy of Nitevilla.net.) This is the 24th Brutal Deluxe football podcast of the 2005/2006 season. Scott and I review the NFL divisional playoff games and look at the conference championship matchups. We rant and rave about the most exciting and most horribly officiated game of the season so far, the Steelers' win over the Colts. We also take a look at the BDFL Top 100, which accurately predicted the NFL MVP again this year. And you BDFL owners should definitely tune in; Scott has a great scoring idea for getting more WR's in the top 20. Links:

Brighthand's Predictions for 2006
I may have missed this last week but Brighthand have written down their predictions for the year ahead. "A new year is starting, and Brighthand is going to carry out its long-running tradition of making some predictions for what's going to come down the pipe in the next twelve months. Just like last year, contributing writer Shawn Barnett has chimed in with some of his thoughts. There's no doubt that the big news in the Palm OS world will be the version of this operating system based on Linux which will be released around the middle of this year. " [SAMMY] Personally I think it's going to be a great year for Palm especially with the new Treo range of handhelds. |

10 Jahre www.bundestag.de

RSS Ad Stats
With RSS traffic and RSS reader adoption booming, ad impressions on traditional sites will inevitably go down. Web publishers will need to work out how to make money off of the RSS r/evolution via embedding ads in RSS. For some very useful statistics on RSS advertising click-through-rates and RSS reader behavior, check out Pheedo's blog - Pheed Read #1 and # 2. The feeds are instructive and suggest that RSS ads significantly outperform traditional web advertising wrt CTRs. Furthermore, given RSS subscriptions allow for more effective targeting and segmentation it is likely that the CPCs will be higher than with traditional on-line ads. Web publishers may find that driving RSS usage increases ad-related revenues despite a decline in "home site" web-site page views. I would love to talk with people working actively in this area. Thanks to Pheedo for the data. |

Read Only if You Care: rev2.org Design Update
Ok, so I’ve finished the design (at least the preview) but, I’m not sure if it looks fine now or I should change some stuff or start all over again. This is the real hold up. I want to release it so that I’m 100% happy with it and would love your feedback on this. Here’s the design preview (with stolen text from an [unnameable] blog for preview — don’t sue me :)): As you can see, I’m confused. The design is 101% original (e.g. mine) but yet I feel like its a 2nd class WordPress theme based on something from a content management system. I can assure you it’s not. But, to make it look anti-theme, I have some changes in the works. So, feedback is much appreciated (sid@rev2.org) and as always, comments are open. |

DIVX vs. DivX
It's ironic that the popular DivX codec has all but obliterated the identity of the ill-fated DIVX pay-per-view rental system.
So what was DIVX?
DIVX (Digital Video Express) was a rental format variation on the DVD player in which a customer would buy a DIVX disc -- physically similar to a DVD -- at a low cost, which would be able to be freely viewed up to 48 hours from its initial viewing. After this period, the disc could be viewed by paying a continuation fee, typically $3.25. DIVX discs could only be played on special DIVX/DVD combo players that needed to be connected to a phone line. DIVX Viewers had to set up an account that additional viewing fees could be charged to. The player would call an account server over the phone line to charge for viewing fees similar to the way DirecTV and Dish Network satellite systems handle pay-per-view. Viewers who wanted unlimited viewing of a particular disc could pay to convert the disc to "Silver" status for a special fee. The physical disc was not altered in any way. The viewer's account kept track of the status of each disc. The Silver disc could be kept for future viewing, resold, given away, or discarded. This particular bad idea was intensely unpopular online. In 1998 and early 1999, it felt like you couldn't visit a website without seeing an anti-DIVX banner plastered on it somewhere.
The format barely lasted a year. The DivX codec was introduced in 1998 and intentionally named to parody the besieged DIVX format:
Early versions of DivX included only a codec, and were named "DivX ;-)", where the winking emoticon was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the failed DIVX system. The DivX codec has a rather storied history itself:
The name replacement is so complete that the divx domain has been subsumed as well. You can watch it change hands via the internet archive wayback machine. The last DIVX snapshot is in October 1999; the site goes dark throughout 2000, and reappears in February 2001 as DivX. It sure is funny when a little hacked codec name joke turns into a multi-million dollar business under the same exact name. * The ethically questionable 2001 commercial DivX fork of the OpenDivx project is where the open source XviD codec originates from. It's DivX backwards, naturally.

Three Interesting Films
I know I haven't been posting alot lately; things have been busy. Once
I start writing a bit more for class, I'll have more content, I promise. I do want to recommend a few films for you to watch, though: The first is The God Who Wasn't There. It's a film by Brian Flemming, whose last work of genius was Batboy The Musical. "The God Who Wasn't There," however, is a bit more irreverent and more controversial, in that it discusses the following: It's gotten great reviews, and I definitely enjoyed it. The next film is The Yes Men. Now, The Yes Men isn't just a movie. There is a ton of content on their site about approaching globalization in a light and humorous way. The third film is one I haven't seen yet, but it looks very promising. It's called Why We Fight. It takes a hard look at the "military-industrial complex," as mentioned by Dwight D. Eisenhower in his farewell speech: Eugene Jarecki, the director, was interviewed on The Daily Show last night, and he had alot of great things to say. When you can get a chance, I'm guessing this will be worth your time and money. Tags: dirtygreek Entertainment movies films documentaries war god religion |

Eric Mack to present findings on his paperless challenge
Eric Mack has been living the paperless life for a number of weeks and he is ready to present his findings about the challenge on his blog. In typical Eric fashion he is going to podcast about the experience and is looking for a co-host to help him do so. He is also taking questions from his readers about the experience that he will answer on the podcast. Head over to his blog to post a question or to apply for the co-host position. There is a picture of Eric on his blog with his Tecra M4 that made the paperless challenge possible. He is wearing a jacket and tie and I must ask Eric to forego that for the podcast- we don't want him to set the bar too high. |

¿A qué esperas? |

Office 12 u praksi
Par nedelja koristim Betu Office-a 12 i neprekidno se iznenađujem naprednim mogućnostima nove verzije najprodavanijeg MS paketa. Kolaborativni rad
je znaÄajno poboljÅ¡an, a mogućnosti pregleda, revidiranja

Biznis vs. Business - borba za internaute

Pegasus One NoteTaker- digital pen for OneNote users
Digital pens are an alternative for taking digital notes in ink for those who do not have a Tablet PC. There are a number of pens to choose from but the Pegasus One NoteTaker is the only one I have seen that imports the notes directly into Microsoft OneNote. The Pegasus uses a scanner that tracks the pen on regular paper and translates the text and sketches taken on the page into digital notes for OneNote. The scanner connects to a PC via USB and the whole package is small and light. The One NoteTaker will work on any paper up to A4 size and the scanner resolution is 100 dpi. The Pegasus comes with software to bring the notes into OneNote on the PC which is localized in the following languages:
The Pegasus web site lists the One NoteTaker for just $59 so this might be an economic alternative for those interested in digital pen technology for taking notes. |

Teany is going Back to the Future
Dhaval Mehta: Teany, a favorite tea spot of mine (pun so intended), is going back to its roots. I went to the spot two days ago and discovered unfortunately that it was closed. Baffled, I had to know what was going on - so I went to the site. Here's what Kelly - one of the co-owners (along with artist Moby) had to say about the situation: dear teany customers and teany fans, No - thank you Kelly. Kelly is really nice at Teany. Once, a group of 5 of us went and there was a 40 minute wait. As a thank you for us waiting, she let us pick any music that we wanted and of course, I spoke up and demanded some hot and bothered Ladytron action. My only concern is what every other patron's will be who has been there before. If we waited 40 minutes before, how long will the wait be now?! I have to find a new coffee spot. I know there are a lot of coffee houses downtown, but it really takes a while to pick one and settle in and make it your own. Any suggestions? Comments on this Entry: |

Managing User Experience Performance
A good first post on a new blog by a strategy director at Frog Design ... "Part One: Understanding the Experience/Expectation Gap Why smart near term choices on improving user experience can be liabilities later. Developing complex products today - cellphones, digital music, cars - is challenging because there are many ingredients that must go into providing a satisfying user experience for customers. Everyone one wants to make a compelling, coherent experience, as customers are becoming more sophisticated about expecting them, but few companies have the resources, expertise, budget or time to develop every element themselves - interfaces, controls, web applications, operating systems, retail integration, etc. So you have to make decisions about what you're going to do custom, and what you're going to get off-the-shelf. These decisions have major impacts on not just how customers will perceive you, but also your future flexibility and growth path as a company. They also have a dramatic effect on profit margins." continued ... (Via Adam Richardson)

Interesting Report Promotes Ocean Power
Renewable Energy Access just put out a pretty interesting report on the future of "ocean energy" - that combination of often forgotten ways of generating electricity that includes wave and tidal power. Despite the obvious enormity of the ocean's energy, it's been very difficult to capture economically. However, according to the report, 2006 is likely to be a landmark year in terms of new technologies and developments that may make it economically feasable in the very near future. One can't forget, however, that real energy progress is more likely to be made by a combination of "green" generation techniques and a more widespread adoption of efficiency as a priority. Continuing to be gluttons in one way or another will still have negative consequences. (Story via The Future is Green) |

Time Running Short on Toyota Hybrid Tax Credit
If you've ever thought about picking up a Toyota hybrid (either a Prius or Highlander, with Camry coming soon), we suggest you make haste and do it soon. According to The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT), signed into law last August and effective January 1, the tax credit buyers receive for purchasing a hybrid car begins to phase out after an automaker sells 60,000 of the eligible vehicles between the beginning of 2006 and the end of 2010. The one-year credit “phase out†begins after the next complete calendar quarter; 50% of the credit will be available for that manufacturer’s hybrids in the first two quarters of the phaseout period and 25% in the final two quarters. According to the Detroit News, after selling 146,533 hybrids last year, Toyota is on track to hit the 60,000 mark in the first half of 2006; the sun is definitely setting on the automaker's ability to offer full tax credits. |

Benchmarking PHP : Sub Strings vs Reg Exps
I’m currently working on a PHP script that is facing some performance issue : I’m dealing with a number of text files (about 7000 of them) that I need to process before I can inject some data in MySQL, and I want the job done before hitting the Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded. Of
course, I’m processing files by chunks, but I’m also hunting potential
speed improvements in each line of my script. For instance, I know
that manipulating substrings is faster than messing with regular
expressions, but how faster exactly ? Those of you interested in a
scoopless yet interesting benchmark of substr() vs preg_something() can continue their reading :) (...) © Ozh for planetOzh, 2006. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us digg |

What Do You Blog About? Check Your Tags
Once you get past the issue of explaining what a blogger is and does, then comes the question, “What do you blog about?” Do you know? Do you really know what you blog about? You might think you know but do you really know? There’s a way to check. If you are using a tag cloud or keyword heat map plugin or feature on your blog, your most popular tags will be the largest in your tag cloud. If you use a tag frequently, the odds are that you blog about that topic. The above graphic is from my main site, Taking Your Camera on the Road. The largest tag words are:
From this list, it looks like I write a lot about nature photography and the business of nature photography along with travel and website development including WordPress and web pages, and about Israel. Then there are those large Doing and Going tags. It looks like I write about way too many confusing topics, right? A tag list is a good reflection of what you are blogging about, but you also need to understand how it works and why it says what it does. With this information, you can cull the facts about what you blog about. Let’s sift through the tags for information about what I blog about. Doing, Going, Learning, Planning for the Road, Business of Nature Photography, Photography Techniques, Web Pages, Website Development, Telling, and Israel are categories. WordPress automatically turns categories into tags. Yes, these are topics I blog about, but a few months ago I decided to start this blog, Lorelle on WordPress, to hold all my website development and blogging topics, including WordPress topics. So I can explain to someone that I do blog about website development, blogging and WordPress on one of my blogs. Over time, these category tags will reduce in size comparatively. It also means I need to go through and do a better job tagging my posts from among the photography and travel educational material. So tagging can help to remind you of administration tasks left undone. Israel is a strange one in the list, but that is part of our personal blog category called Telling. We have just returned to the United States after living in Israel for the past 5 years, so you can imagine I had a few things to say about life there over the past few years. This, too, like the website material, will reduce in size now that I won’t be talking about living in Israel. This is another good example of how to monitor what you are blogging about. If you find a specific topic tag growing in size and it isn’t really reflective of what you blog about, let it serve as a warning to get back on topic, or make an overall change in your blogging topic. Take away the web stuff, and what I write about is nature photography and travel and topics related to those subjects. Bingo, I have just summed up what I write about on that site. Now it is easy to explain to people that I have two blogs. On one I blog about WordPress and blogging and the other I blog about nature photography and travel. That pretty much sums up the topics. I still have to work on explaining blogging to people over 60 years old, but I’m getting better at that. If they don’t understand, I just tell them that I’m a writer and I write about nature photography, travel, and web stuff. That pretty much covers it. If you need more help explaining what you do to others, I’ve written a series of articles called “Ten Words or Less” about how to convey your job description to others to help improve your networking and business contacts.

Living Proof
Cat Power
hasn't necessarily rocked my world in the past, but the new album is
totally winning me over. You can hear the whole thing on her MySpace
page, and while I'm sure some will bemoan her moving away from the
skeletally weary folk of her earlier releases, I for one welcome her
adoption of fuller instrumentation and melodicism. The album is out
next Tuesday, and the press machine is revving up. Australia's The Age and New York Metro have interviews with the notoriously reticent Chan Marshall while The New York Times profiles both her and Beth Orton and reviewing their respective new records. Finally, keep an eye out for the first video from The Greatest for "Living Proof", shot by Harmony Korine - Tim O Thompson reports that "it's a bit racy". You hear that? That was the sound of a nation of indie boys fainting. And on the topic of Matador-affiliated, formerly press-shy indie royalty The Sunday Herald has an old-fashioned sit-down with Stuart Murdoch and comes away with an impressively expansive and in-depth interview with the Belle & Sebastian leader. And in addition to the release of their new album The Life Pursuit on February 7, there's the release of Put The Book Back On The Shelf, an anthology of comics based on B&S songs. I am having trouble finding real accurate info on the release date - I've found listings for every week in February - but The Beguiling and Soundscapes seem fairly certain that it'll be out by February 8th, because that's the day they're holding a release party for both the CD and the book at Andy Poolhall out on College St. Some of the artists will be in attendance, so it's your chance to hang out with indie kids AND comic geeks... or show up with a bazooka and put us all out of our misery. You know you'd be doing us a favour. And at the other end of the spectrum, some artists who have trouble keeping their gobs shut... Oasis are at the Air Canada Centre on March 20. Didn't know they were on tour over here? Me neither, but there you go. The Arctic Monkeys, who have probably already sold out their show at the Phoenix the next day to Toronto's infamous slavering Anglophiles, will open. Because, you know, they're already here. And also on March 20 - Six By Seven's Club Sandwich At The Peveril Hotel gets a formal release but the band has 500 copies on sale now through their website, some even autographed. The release is described as "a mixture of high quality master recordings, demo's and slightly unfinished masterpieces" and contains tracks that were intended for the follow-up to their swan song Artists Poets Cannibals Thieves, which never came to be. Did I ever post about my attempts to buy a copy of that album over eBay? I won an auction for a copy from some dude/shop in the UK and sent payment via Paypal. A couple weeks later, I get a package in the mail that certainly feels like a CD, but when I open it up, it turns out that it's an empty jewel case with a 10 pound note in it along with a written apology that they couldn't find the CD in their store so here's my refund. Somehow paying me in a foreign currency and shipping it as a small parcel made more sense to them than just refunding my Paypal. Attempts to contact the seller just got me profuse email apologies, but no explanation as to what the hell they were thinking. And so I carry that ten quid around with me in my wallet as a reminder that, well, some people are just fucked. And I still don't have a copy of the record. And more news from the UK - Eamon Hamilton has left British Sea Power to concentrate full-time on Brakes. 24: I think it goes without saying that President Logan should be removed from office and replaced with David Palmer's corpse. Or Sherry Palmer's corpse. Or a potted plant. I wonder if the producers were given a directive to somehow come up with a President who makes the real one look good by comparison? And that kid is SO not 15 years old, though he does cry like a little girl. Oh look! Sam Gamgee in a suit! Silly hobbitses. The airport siege went pretty well, though I don't really see what sort of threat the terrorists really were, considering that all they had in those explosive vests was confetti. And biohazard weapons? Yawn. np - Chapterhouse / Whirlpool |

Tuesday Sampler - Golden Globes
Paris and Nicky Hilton, minus their nipple displaying mom Kathy, laughing about the lack of talent they have. I hate that there is politics in award shows. Will and Grace finally win a Globe - because it's their last year and everyone feels like they should. If there show is so deserving, why haven't they won the last 37 years then? Mariah Carey looking horrible as usual. She has to have her breasts hanging out of her outfit at all times. I want the old "Vision of Love" Mariah back! As usual, Jessica Alba looked fantastic at the Globes. The dress was beautiful. Check out Matthew Broderick looking at her ass. Doesn't Mary Kate Olsen have the fake Jennifer Aniston smile on in this picture? She even looks like Jennifer. Something is wrong here. Yeah for Reese!! I didn't see the movie but she has been doing great movies for quite some time now. Doesn't this remind you of a Tom Cruise Power Hunger Moment? I am a bit confused. I might be thinking control when it is really passion. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe kissing at the Golden Globes. |

Blogging software
Most older readers will know I've tried most blogging software over time, but the one I wuld really like to use is Moveable Type. But except once I have never been able to configure it. But are having another go. And this time are not worried about deleting my blog because it exists on another web domain so that will always be there. So if this blog disappears it can still be accessed via my other Crazy Calvinist Site Tho with Bob's brain I not confident of getting movable type working. But who knows. Sometimes I hate puters!! At least when they become a struggle to do the things I used to find simple.

Extreme Site Optimization For Speed Loading
While I don’t agree with everything said, Brave New Word’s article, “Web Developers, Speed Up Your Web Pages”, does offer some excellent tips on optimizing for web pages for speed. Excellent points for everyone to follow include cleaning out unnecessary spaces, tabs, and code; using medium to high compression and small file sizes on images; keep javascripts and cookies small and avoid them if you can; dump table layouts; and cleaning up anything in your Theme or page code that makes too many requests on the database. I’ve talked about this before, and I offer my own tips in the following articles. Just remember, if you are using WordPress, other than cleaning up the excessive use of spaces and tabs in the Themes, WordPress comes pretty optimized right out of the box. Just make sure that your blog’s code is error free and the Theme is not making too many requests on the database, which does slow things down while loading.

Instead of just listing the “Top Search This Hour”, Technorati is now offering the list of Top Search and Hot Tag at its front page. It’s a minor step forward by Technorati. But it’d sure slowly changing blogger’s habit, pay more attention to Tag, Tag and Tag. With more accurate tagging and your blog posts got more attention. What’d be my wished feature on Technorati? I hope it’d separate tagging by different language and providing search based on different languages, this should have boost blogging to the other level world wide. |

The Dirty Dozen: 12 Predictions for Digital Audio and Video
With 2006 upon everyone is offering their predictions for the year so I figured I would throw my hat in the ring, especially as it comes to the future digital audio and video. Paul Colligan and Alex Mandossian over at MarketingOnlineLive.com got me thinking about this yesterday during one of their podcasts and 24 hours later I've got a list of what I think will transpire in the next 12 months. Enjoy! 1. Device convergence will happen more quickly than anyone realizes. When you're walking down the street carrying both a cell phone and iPod (or other mobile player) and you bump into your friend who has a killer cell phone will all the same mobile media functionality as your iPod you're going to want to switch...soon. The number of people who carry a combination cell phone/media player will grow significantly through 2006 and explode in 2007. Here's a recent quote from Sun CEO Scott McNealy, "It's going to be hard to sell a lot of iPods five years from now when every cell phone is going to be able to automatically access your library wherever you are." I don't think that's going to take five years. Verizon has a phone with a 4 Gig chip on the horizon. The convergence trend will happen quickly. And when it does it's likely going to mean... 2. The iPod could become the next TiVo. TiVo is a superior product to any other DVR on the market. It has a great interface and does pretty much everything very well. Yet the general consensus is that unless something changes soon the TiVo will go the way of the dodo bird. The problem? Distribution. Requiring a consumer to buy an extra box and an extra service means asking them to jump through two more hoops than they have to when they get a DVR from their cable company. Apple will face the same challenge with the iPod. As device convergence emerges people will begin to wonder why they need to purchase a separate device and load content on it when they can just do everything through their cell phone. So unless Apple makes significant strides in the mobile phone space their domainance in the mobile media market will quickly fade. 3. Google Video will be bigger than anyone realizes. Google Video appears to be able on the cusp of doing something that no one has really done to date: Allowing individuals a significant opportunity for monetization of video content. Their current video store leaves a lot to be desired but I trust that they will figure this out...after all, they are Google. And when they give people an incentive to produce quality video content and get paid 70 cents on the dollar for their efforts the game changes significantly. They'll be empowering the little guy to sell video content much the same way that a certain little company called eBay empowered the little guy to sell products a decade ago. And we all know how well that worked out for eBay... 4. Satellite video will arrive...courtesy of the satellite radio guys. Two themes seem to be emerging in video: The ability of companies like Google Video and Netflix to meet the demand for long-tail content and the ability of Apple and others to provide space-shifted content (see Prediction #12). Space-shifting allows people to view video content whereever they are. I can watch content on the train on the way to work, when I'm at the gym, at home on my new HD TV (I wish...), etc. Who is best positioned to provide this? It just might be XM and Sirius, the satellite radio companies. Their mobile players offer a ton of potential and Sirius already has announced plans for video in 2006. It's very likely the day will soon come when people consider ditching their cable or DirecTV subs for an XM or Sirius-powered satellite video service. 5. Real Rhapsody for the spoken word will surface. I love Real Rhapsody. And their new Rhapsody-To-Go service is killer and would be a huge hit if only Apple would take down the walled garden and let Real license its DRM. But enough about music...let's talk about the spoken word. It seems to me like a huge opportunity exists to do for the spoken word what Real/Yahoo!/Napster have done for music. Don't limit someone to just a couple of audio books a month (a la Audible.com). Instead give someone the ability to listen to whatever they want, whenever they want. If you're an hour into an audio book and it sucks, fine, just jump to something better. There are a few companies right now vying for the non-Apple/Audible/iPod spoken word throne: Sounds Good, Jiggerbug and Simply Audiobooks. A tremendous opportunity exists for one of them to attempt to create a Rhapsody-like service for audio books. I'd be one of their first subscribers. 6. Audible will hit an unexpected snag with WordCast. Audible recently launched WordCast, their podcasting service to enable advertising and/or premium content. There's just one slight problem. If I'm an author and want to get an audio book up on Audible's website I'm looking at a royalty somewhere in the neighborhood of 15%. But if I take that same audio book and sell it through WordCast (complete with DRM if I wish) my take jumps to 80%. Does something seem strange here? I think at some point there has to be an acknowledgement that all of the "services" that traditional publishers and companies like Audible provide lose a lot of their luster in a world in which it's increasingly easy to go directly to the consumer with your products. Somehow the gap between 15% and 80% will have to close and that could be a bit painful for Audible. 7. Podshow will focus on music and Odeo will focus on personalized communication. The two podcast-related companies that received major chunks of funding in 2005 will find themselves in a bit of a tough spot in 2006. The big boys like iTunes and Yahoo! have the directory game pretty well sown up and the market for podcast production software is becoming increasingly commoditized. But all hope is certainly not lost for these companies. The most sensible thing appears to be for Podshow to focus on the music side of podcasting, the area in which Adam Curry and Ron Bloom have the most knowledge. Becoming anything and everything to musicians looking to market themselves via podcasts seems to offer an incredible opportunity for the company and I hope that's what their focus becomes. As for Odeo, Evan Williams has expressed a desire to be closely involved with facilitating personal communication via RSS. He's a visionary in that regard and to the best of my knowledge, one of the few people talking about it. To the extent that Odeo makes it incredibly easy for people to send and receive podcasts to and from friends and family I think they have a tremendous business. Like Podshow, they'll fail only to the extent that they try to dominate podcasting as a whole rather than focusing on a specific niche of what is rapidly becoming a huge industry. 8. OPML matching will arrive on the scene. This prediction strikes me as somewhat obvious but suprisingly absent from the current dialogue. If you and I each subscribe to 20 podcasts and it just so happens that 17 of them are the same then I want to know the three you've subscribed to that I haven't and you would likely want to know the same thing. I'm not certain but this doesn't seem like rocket science. To the extent that someone launches a service that allows for this and it reaches critical mass you'll have an amazing discovery service for podcasts, something that will become even more important as tens of thousands of new podcasts come online this year. I'm not sure exactly what AmigoFish and Loomia are doing with their recommendation services but if they haven't incorporated OPML matching yet it would be a great idea. And get Netflix to do this for movie queues while you're at it... :) 9. Many "mini" multimedia portals will be launched. Music artists have fans. Many fans will buy whatever the artist is selling (hence, $40 concert T-shirts). Artists set up fan clubs. Fan pay annual fees for "goodies." Everyone is happy. Now why not do this for authors, gurus, etc. Why shouldn't a Tony Robbins or Tom Peters have their own multimedia portal? You could pay $20 a month and have access to exclusive audio and video content, RSS feeds and other stuff that fans of these individuals would eat up. A lot of big names could literally bring on thousands or tens of thousands of subscribers overnight. Do the math and consider that almost all of this revenue falls directly to the bottom line and you can see that we're talking about a huge opportunity here. Companies like iAmplify, What is Enlightenment?, Integral Naked, The Great Lecture Library and many others are already doing something of this nature for collections of content. Multimedia portals around individuals are next. 10. Podcast prioritzation will become a reality. I want to be able to communicate to my media player that I have a 45 minute drive ahead of me and have the media player automatically figure out the best content to deliver to me based on the amount of time I have, the latest content that's been loaded to my player and the preferences that I've given it ahead of time. Sound farfetched? It's not. In fact, Taldia is offering something very close to this right now. The only problem with their system is that they haven't incorporated prioritization into podcast feeds yet, just for the news feeds they offer. If they (or someone else) offers the ability to give me a "custom commute" I'll sign up in a heartbeat. When that happens manually locating which podcasts you've recently put on your iPod, which you've listened to, calculating how much time you have to listen and how long each episode is...all that will seem so 2005. 11. Live event content will start to tap its true potential. Every day, around the U.S. and around the world many thousands of people say things worth listening to in classrooms, seminars, conferences and other forums. A very small percentage of that content is recorded. An even smaller percentage is distributed to a wide audience via the Internet. Why? You tell me. I haven't been able to figure it out yet. If this content wasn't worth listening to or watching people wouldn't pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to attend these events. And while there are some benefits of attending a live event there are also some significant drawbacks. I think the market for the recording and distribution of live events is an incredibly huge one and hope that 2006 is the year when many people wake up to this. We're hoping that efforts like Doug Kaye's Conversations Network and our soon-to-be launched LearnDirect service will help provide the match that starts the fire. 12. New words will be coined and gain widespread adoption. This list of predictions wouldn't be complete without a prediction for a few new words that will enter the lexicon in 2006. Here are some that I think will enter the dialogue this year as well as a couple that I'm definitely hoping will. :) Space-shifting - As previously mentioned, this is the ability of content to be with you whereever you are. To the extent that content can be consumed anywhere it's value increases tremendously. That's incredibly important for those providing content and distribution channels to understand. Dead-time Learning - Thanks to Paul and Alex who've used this term on their show for a while. Dead-time learning refers to turning time that is normally thought of as intellectually unproductive (e.g., commuting, exercising, etc.) into prime learning time. It's taking your hour commute and using it to learn a new foreign language, study for a certification exam or stay on top of trends in your industry. By doing so you'll free up more time to spend with your friends and family, devote to your hobbies and do the things that you previously thought you didn't have time for. DRM-free - People already use the term "DRM-free" but I'm hoping/predicting that it will become thought of as more of a feature in 2006. People will start to actively seek out DRM-free sources of content and show an increasing willingness to pay more for content that hasn't had DRM applied to it. It won't be because they're looking to illegally share such content but rather because they want to have the versatility to share content they legally purchased across the increasing number of devices they own. Learning Out Loud - My wish for 2006 is that people increasingly talk about their desire to "learn out loud" which I define as using audio or video content for personal and professional development. Part of this is a selfish desire as the CEO of LearnOutLoud.com and part of this is (hopefully) a very altruistic desire to see everyone become more educated this year. I truly feel that education represents the rising tide with the potential to lift all boats. And I also feel that in an era of globalization and increasing competition "lifelong learning" becomes less of an option and more of a requirement if you want to stay ahead of the curve and possibly even keep your job. So we'll see how this all shakes out. At the end of the day I'm more excited than 2006 than I've ever been excited about an upcoming year and many of the people I've talked to lately have expressed the same sense of hope and optimism. There are so many cool technologies coming down the pipe and the opportunity to effect positive and lasting change in the world is more real than it's ever been. Discuss this post in the LOL Forums! Want to subscribe to this blog? This free, short video tutorial will show you how. |

Mario and Sonic get involved in the ultimate showdown, but (spoiler alert!) neither the overweight plumber or the supersonic hedgehog come out victorious. Are you finding your Windows Taskbar too small?
Are you finding that you have so many applications open at a single time that your Windows Taskbar becomes impossible to navigate because of the crazy number of items it contains? Windows XP has a way to help you. It’s called Grouping. This is a feature that allows the buttons to be collapsed into a single button and you find the application that you need by clicking on the button that represents the collapsed button and the choose the application or document that you want to see. You can easily enable grouping. Right-click on an empty portion of the Taskbar and choose Properties. This brings up the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box. From here check the Group similar taskbar buttons option. Here’s how grouping looks on the Taskbar: However, if you have the TweakUI PowerToy (download from here ) installed you can take more control over the Taskbar by setting preferences for how the grouping occurs. This will give you far more space on the Taskbar and make applications and documents a lot easier to spot. Technorati Tags: Windows, Taskbar, Windows XP, TweakUI, PowerToy |

Coding issues cause Skype 2.0 to generate DEP warning
George Ou has reported a problem with Skype 2.0 which causes it to generate a DEP (Data Execution Prevention) warning on Windows XP SP 2 systems. DEP is a technology built into AMD and Intel processors to prevent malicious code from running on systems when an application tries to insert or run code from non-executable memory locations (much more on that here ). There are workarounds for these issues but adding a program to the exception list makes it vulnerable to exploits itself, and since Skype is a communication program that uses the Internet it is a possible vector for hackers to try to get into systems. Skype need to fix this and fix it quick. It’s probably nothing more than a coding bug but the workaround makes the Skype application a serious target for hackers now. Paul and The Incident With The Muffins
Exclusively, for the first time to the general public, to the amazement of dozens; And now for the future generations of teenagers who are going to have to write essays about this legendary piece of early 21st Century comedy, here's a play by play break down of it all. Synopsis:This movie has two key characters; Paul, a young man with a fine taste in clothes, is who the movie is obviously centred on. The camera rarely leaves Paul and the action clearly happens around him. The second key character is the director of the movie. This man is often heard but is never seen, he exists to drive the film along and provide someone with whom Paul can interact and bounce of with. As well as this, three other characters exist, Paul's two older siblings and a mutual friend of Paul and the director, who, for some inexplicable reason, is ginger. The plot is deceptively simple, the director and the ginger friend turn up at the end of a party to pick up Paul and his siblings and take them home. Paul takes a plate of muffins home with him and causes much mischief with them. Play by Play Break Down

public criminology - soctalk january 17 and lawtalks january 28
Weblog: public criminology Source: soctalk january 17 and lawtalks january 28 Link: http://pubcrim.blogspot.com/2006/01/soctalk-january-17-and-lawtalks.html here's an update on a minntalk this week and a small minnconference (minnminiconference?) next week: 1. i'm speaking with shelly schaefer on voting and the civic reintegration of former prisoners this tuesday as part of the sociology department workshop series. this one was bumped last semester for a really impressive roster of job candidates. the workshops are held in 1109 social sciences from 4-5:15 and all are welcome. 2. those interested in racial disparities in punishment and felon voting research might be more interested in silenced voices: the constitutionality and legality of felon disenfranchisement provisions on saturday, january 28 at the university of minnesota law school. law school professor carl warren is organizing the conference as part of the national civil rights moot court competition, which this year will examine johnson v. bush. all are welcome and attendance is free. attorneys can even get continuing legal education credit* if they contact the organizers in advance. this should be really good -- i know i'll learn a lot. marc mauer of the sentencing project and race to incarcerate will be speaking on racial disparities. i'm especially eager to meet rep. keith ellison, who has introduced legislation to reenfranchise probationers and parolees. other speakers include catherine weiss of the brennan center, art eisenberg of the nyclu, and gary dickey, counsel and advisor to iowa governor
tom vilsack. i'll be doing an overview in the morning session, which
will overlap with my department talk. events will be held at the
minnesota law school from 9-3, but i don't have the specific rooms yet.
here's the tentative schedule:
Noon to 1:00 p.m. *5.6 hours of continuing legal education and judicial education credits (4.6 hours regular credit and 1.0 hours of Elimination of Bias credit) are available. |

China and India Race for Resources (CEO, TOT, PTR)
Kurt Wulff (McDep Associates) submits: China beat India again in the race for energy resources with buy-recommended CNOOC Limited(CEO)’s $2.3 billion purchase offshore Nigeria. Apparently an Indian company had bid more for the property, but was overruled by the Indian government. Still in the early stages of development, the project must overcome water depth of a thousand feet or more and the seller is a private company connected to a former military person, according to press reports. The operator, buy-recommended Total (TOT), confers economic, technological, and political credibility. While
the Government of China, 71% owner of CEO, may understand the need to
be competitive in buying oil reserves, it appears to be lagging in
recognizing comparable value in natural gas. To underscore the latter
point, six-year futures of natural gas settled at a new high of $9.05 a
million btu in our weekly series. Both CEO and buy-recommended
PetroChina (PTR) have long-life natural gas production priced recently at less than a third of current six-year futures.

Content Discussion :: Project Gotham Racing 3
Author: Chris Subject: Project Gotham Racing 3 Posted: Sun Jan 15, 2006 3:34 pm (GMT 0) Topic Replies: 0 Bytesector has posted a publication on this topic. Below is a brief description and link. Please post all comments and questions in this thread regarding this publication. Title: Project Gotham Racing 3 Description: Ever since Microsoft started bombarding us with images and videos of what the Xbox 360 was really capable of, we\'ve been seeing glimpses of Project Gotham Racing 3. It was clear from the very beginning that Microsoft would really be pushing hard for this game to succeed. Maybe it was just a matter of the channels I watch or the times I watch TV, but I can honestly say that the only Microsoft-published game I have seen being advertised is PGR3. But after playing the game, it all makes sense. The game\'s near perfect visuals as well as impressive gameplay both online and offline make for quite the gaming experience and one that is a definite way to impress people with your new console. Affluenza
An amazing book. I am looking forward to reading this in full.
Editorial Reviews Many books make you think the author has crammed everything he or she knows into it. The feeling you get reading Affluenza is quite different; the authors appear well-read, well-rounded, and intelligent, knowledgeable beyond the content of their book but smart enough to realize that we need a short, sharp jolt to recognize our current ailment. It's a well-worn cliché that money can't buy happiness, but this book will strike a chord with anyone who realizes that more time is more valuable than toys, and that our relentless quest for the latest stuff is breeding sick individuals and sick societies. Affluenza is, in fact, a clarion call for those interested in being part of the solution. --S. Ketchum --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. |

How to chose a book title?
So maybe if post the book concepts here and my very very bad title ideas, some of you creative types can suggest some better ones, and I'll acknowledge the best one if I get to use it. I also want to involve people in the writing process of these books as much as I can, and incorporate it into the books, with support from the publishers. The Middle Way: This comes out of my doctoral dissertation, which was titled 'Via Media', and explores the wisdom of a middle way for doing church between the extremes of stiff conservativism on one hand and the reactionary ultra fluidity and pragmatism on the other, and how theology can steer us through both. It's a book for pastors and leaders, who still love and believe in church, who are open to issues of culture and change, not wanting to react defensively to emerging culture and context, but don't want to go down the 'lets be post-church route', and want some help. The Life You Already Have This is a general, non leadership book on spiritual formation. It would take the experiences, stories, teaching, and practices from my church community, for content, but is specifically about my church. It's more a how can people find, develop, grow in faith in community in an emerging context. I'm hoping it will be a book that ordinary people can read, and again help them avoid the two extremes of conservative reaction, and post-church pragmatism, and get into issues of emerging church through a middle way. So what on earth would be intriguing and at the same time give and idea of what these book are about? Don't be shy post some suggestions please! And if you are up for it, please link to this and help me get as many suggestions as possible. Technorati Tags: Book Title, How to, Jason Clark |

5 programs I couldn’t live without! - #1 - BlogJet
This week’s tips are a little different to previous weeks. This week I’m going to quickly introduce the five programs that I simply couldn’t live without (work wise that it). These are programs that I turn to many times a day and literally have become old friends. All the programs that I will be looking at have a free trial so you can try them out for yourself - who knows, they might be just what you are looking for! The first is the program I’m typing this message into right now - BlogJet . BlogJet tools has become my “must have”tool for blogging. Yes, I know that I can just log in to WordPress and compose a post from there but that seems far too slow and cumbersome. With BlogJet I can compose a post offline, format the text, add images and even save a copy of the post and come back to it later. It also has a pretty cool spellchecker! I use WordPress here but BlogJet supports a huge array of blogging platforms. BlogJet is one cool tool! For more information visit http://www.blogjet.com . Technorati Tags: BlogJet |

Ergebnisse der Studie: "Wie ich blogge?!"
Dr.

Mas

Commemorating King's Legacy
Nonviolence is not servile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation. Sooner or later, all people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace. That's the leading quote for Vernon Clark's story in yesterday's Inquirer ("King Day brings call for recommitment"). Philly.com also has video from a 1967 speech to Philadelphia school students, which is fairly short and well worth watching. |

Dinner And Other Things
Last night Rob and I headed out to Round Table for dinner. I've learned that by piling every meat known to man onto a pizza, that I can tolerate it and still get a target number. I'm rather happy about that because I'm pretty sure I could not go a long time without some sort of pizza. I'm still twitching about the Krispy Kreme situation. Gives me something to look forward to after delivering the baby though. After dinner we went to the ATM and picked up a few things at the grocery store. We then came home, did some cleaning (with the amount of things we shredded it was like we were playing Enron), gamed a little, and then went to bed. Once again, sleep eluded me for a good part of the night. I got a few hours this morning - just enough to be functional today but not enough to be fully awake. ----------

D&D And Doula Meeting
Last night after about a two month span, we finally had D&D again. It's getting harder and harder to be able to get the group together as people's schedules are getting crazy. Game rocked. One of our cities was under attack by paladins and the forces of good so we went in there and whooped some ass. Grell (Krynn's cohort) managed to send some Pelorites and a special box that they had into the negative energy plane. Narcissius (Pita's character) managed to assassinate a great wyrm gold dragon with one shot. It was a very fun game and I'm looking forward to the next one, whenever that may be. As usual, I got very little sleep last night so getting up this morning sucked. But, I managed to do it and Rob and I headed to Carmen's house for our last class. Today was baby care. Wow. This is going to be crazy. There are so many things we need to get before he's born and so many things to do when he's here. *eeps* The class went well and when we were done we headed back home. Just thought I'd get in a quick posting before heading out tonight. ----------
You scored 59% of your longevity, this is a measure of your relative lifetime in an anarchy vs. our current republic. However, you also scored 51 on insanity, this can hurt your lifespan. You're pretty used to things being done for you by the government, but you wouldn't do too badly in an anarchy. |

Finishing Up The Day
After my last entry Rob and I headed out to Ontario and made a stop by the Babies R Us out there. We picked up some things we're going to need before Gabriel gets here. No clothes or toys this time, just practical stuff we have to have. We still have a decent amount to get before he arrives. One of the things we were looking for was a baby carrier, but the people who worked in the store said that only carried the car seat kind (which we don't need because we already have a car seat for him). So... that's one of the things we need to find. Something to carry him in because he won't be able to be in a kangaroo pouch or a stroller until he can hold his head up. After Babies R Us we headed to Montclair for Chinese food at Golden China. It's been awhile since we've eaten there and both Rob and I were craving Chinese food (and it gives me low numbers as long as I don't eat any rice). That's the main reason we headed out to that area in the first place. Dinner was great and when we were done we headed home. Tonight we worked on leveling up Krynn's cohort Grell and had JTV on in the background. Now I'm just getting some online things done since I probably won't be on again until Monday. ----------

Why We Want To Move
For those of you who are still wondering why Rob and I would want to leave Los Angeles for Milwaukee, I believe these two things should make things clear. Granted, if we weren't having a baby we'd probably stay here because an apartment would be just fine. But now that we want a house, well, see for yourself: What we can afford in Los Angeles. What we can afford in the Milwaukee area (Waukesha to be exact). So, um, yeah. Let's hope one of us can find a job out there rather quickly after my 6 week post-partum checkup. |

What's the Deal with Alessandra Stanley?
Alessandra Stanley is the television critic for The New York Times. She is also a favorite target of the media watchers at Gawker, Regret the Error and Reference Tone -- which post evidence of her journalistic carelessness on a regular basis. Reference Tone called her "The Wrongest Critic," and posted a list (a long list) of published corrections of Alessandra's work since 2001. The blog's conclusion: "The woman is clocking corrections at more than a monthly rate. And they are stupid, stupid errors." Gawker started The Alessandra Stanley Watch, and conducted its own analysis to assess "How Wrong Is She?" Gawker's conclusion: We checked 2005 corrections rates on 19 Times cultural critics, and we discovered that Stanley can comfortably claim the title as Most Inaccurate 2005. Indeed, she's more than twice as inaccurate as the average non-Stanley critic at the Times. We asked Craig Silverman, who documents media errors and corrections at Regret The Error, how Alessandra could skate by at The Times with such apparently poor fact-checking skills. Craig's take: I don't like the personal nature of the attacks on her, but she continues to make inexcusable errors. I call them inexcusable not because they are particularly egregious in the sense of their consequences. They are inexcusable because she is getting very simple things wrong on a consistent basis. Craig currently is working on a book (publisher undisclosed) on the topic of media accuracy. At this rate, Alessandra may merit her own chapter. Ciao l'Italia!
Many things came out of my fitness instruction days. A few include lost paychecks, cancelled classes with no notice, worthless interaction wtih the baselessly pompus Mr. Super Tan Manager Man, and a man forcing me to impulsively dance the Salsa with him. Of these things, few (actually none,) are what I would consider wholly positive…although I guess the Salsa guy was ok. One actual good thing that I can credit to Zumba, besides weight loss, is a friendship with fellow instructor Tara. She co-instructed with me after we finished our training course. She was upbeat, very kind and indesputiably a MA native. In July, she and her boyfriend, Hal (who is Norwegian,) went to Norway for a month, and then on to live in Italy. Specifically, they found an apartment in Florence. I only saw her for a short visit over Thanksgiving, but soon we'll really have the chance to catch up because I'M GOING TO ITALY! Impulsive nature + excellent fare sale to Rome = that's amore. The Polish Princess and I spent two weeks in Italy post-graudation but I haven't been back since, and without her I have to navigate the trains by myself. This idea is a bit scary to me, but come on, it's not like I have no sense of direction or something. [crickets] Hey – that was supposed to be a JOKE! Anyone? Hellloooo... |

Mirror neurons and neurotheology
Mirror neurons (Wikipedia) are magical brain cells that fire both when performing some act and watching someone else perform it. In this sense, they can be viewed as the key to learning and sharing behavior, tying the acts we perform to those of others and vice versa. Scholars such as M. Arbib have even proposed that they lie at the heart of language. Now the NYT, in a Jan. 10 article entitled Cells That Read Minds, has given us a competent, if brief, overview of the field. This has been quite widely blogged. What’s the neurotheology connection? Normally we think of mirror neurons as being activated via everyday motions such as reaching for a cup, or sticking out your tongue—something even one-day-old babies can imitate. But what about religious behaviors? Such as bowing, prostrating yourself, or placing your hands together in prayer? If such motions stimulate mirror neurons, especially in young children, there may be grounds to argue that these are hard-wired physical behaviors. |

The truth "out there" is different
A couple of curiosities have come up recently concerning national identity and how it distorts (rightly or wrongly) one's view of things. First was a map of national stereotypes based on Google searches for e.g. "what the English are known for". [via Mike]
Second (and loosely connected) was a letter to the Times published last Friday title "Truth Exchange". Commenting on an initiative between Agincourt and an English school, one Dr Kerry Bluglass of Warwick wrote Not long ago, a charming French acquaintance of mine asked me, in all seriousness, about the British habit of naming landmarks after French victories.Popular history, it would seem, might not written by the victors (be they French or British). It could be written by the group you're in. And that's a little terrifying. |

Digg.com's Influence Increasing - How Long Can It Remain Independent?
My article "More Ways To Speed Up Windows XP" got digged yesterday which nearly killed my site so I couldn't wait to see my stats this morning. Connected Internet got 28K visitors yesterday, an increase of 366% over my usual average and 166K page views, an increase of 1000% over my usual! I hope Blogware don't come after me as bandwidth usage yesterday was 9GB - my monthly allowance is only 2GB.... I went back a couple of months to see how yesterday's "Digg Effect" compared to previous times I'd been digged. Here are two that I found: - (03-Dec) 10 Simple Ways To Speed Up Windows - 18.6K visitors, 63K page views - (18-Oct) Tidy Up iTunes MP3 Collection - 17.5K visitors, 60K page views Not ... |
