New site, new diary
I just feel a need to update, and to write an initial diary for HuSi.  For those of you who were following my non-adventures on K5, I'm still unemployed, still waiting for Wandsworth council to pay housing benefit (It's only been 2 months).  Currently writing a clone of Skidmarks, and currently spend one day a week playing board games with friends.

This next paragraph is written in jargon.  I'll switch back to English afterwards.  Not really getting anywhere with my game engine.  I seem to be suffering a lot with C++, and operator overloading.  It's annoying that if I overload a template function (or is it a function template?) with another function for a specific class, the overload doesn't apply to subclasses.  I replaced the template with a macro to define a fuction instead.  Would also be nice if C++ could have some implicit operator overloads.  At least I've finally found a sensible reason that C++ should be case sensitive.  Naming an instance of a class after the class, but with a lower case first letter saves the effort of coming up with variable names.

Thought I'd have a look at The Yes Men to see if they've done anything for a while.  There's some good stuff there if you like slapstick political satire.   I like this from their FAQ:

Why are you called the Yes Men?
You know how a funhouse mirror exaggerates your most hideous features? We do that kind of exaggeration operation, but with ideas. We agree with people--turning up the volume on their ideas as we talk, until they can see their ideas distorted in our funhouse mirror. Or that's what we try to do, anyhow--but as it turns out, the image always seems to look normal to them.

Might be a good idea when trolling certain tech-oriented websites (I am so childish).  Except these days, I tend not to bother coming up with daft opinions.  I can rely on the regulars to do that for me.  Some people are entertainingly closed minded.  Anyway, satirising their own opinions might be fun.

Also been looking at server hosting companies.  Would be nice to have my own server access, so that I could set up my own scoop site, host other people's wiki's, and stuff like that.  It seems odd that I can get root access of a virtual server in the US for $39.99, which is less than my ADSL connection costs, whereas the cheapest UK based one I could find costs £69.99 per month.  Ah, actually can get one careful owner, less than 10 000GB on the clock.

It would be nice to have a scoop site of my own.  Politics free and all that.

I'm currently wondering whether it might be worth trolling K5.  The place seems to be going very groupthinky.

A poll.  As ever, I will not be a slave to the poll, but will take it into account.

K5 groupthink: very much so. Don't know if there's much point trolling it though: in its current state, it's a bit like kicking an unconscious drunk.
