the Directors Guild of America countersued on behalf of big-name filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, arguing that products that modify DVD movies constitute a trademark violation. Eight movie studios — Disney, MGM, Warner Bros., Sony, DreamWorks, Universal, Fox and Paramount — have joined the legal battle. As the copyright holders, studios say that products such as ClearPlay create unauthorized versions of movies.

ClearPlay counters that its technology does not make copies of movies, nor does it change the actual disc; it simply gives consumers the tools to watch movies as they wish. All sides are waiting for a federal judge in Denver to decide in one side's favor or schedule a pre-trial hearing.

The way I see it once I have purchased a DVD of a movie it is mine to do with as I please. I see no difference between using this DVD player and using my mute or fast forward buttons to edit the films on my own.

1. the design of these e-texts is deliberately so limiting that one cannot easily print more than one page at a time - and yet, we've purchased the book.

2. if you as a private person buy an e-book, you cannot lend it to someone else. this is true for libraries, too - and has forced us to try to negotiate with this fledgling industry to enable the same kind of access and ownership that has long been accepted in the world of print (even though libraries are by FAR the largest purchaser of this stuff.) you know, a book might go out 100 times -- we can sell it at our booksale, with proceeds to the library. we can tear, fold, and spindle - it's our item. we cannot do this with the e-version.

what's happening here is very interesting in a number of ways, and copyright is one of them.
