Is it just me or is it really swrong to keep children in detention camps for months or years. A new report has just come out damning Australia's policy of keeping kids behind razor wire. Apparently the kids in these conditions are getting really fucked up. Well who would have guessed that. The report also says not enough has been done to protect children from tear gas and water cannons during riots. But my government still doesn't see anything wrong. I think Australia was probably more humane back in the penal colony days.

Ditto here in the US. I don't know if its worse than the penal colony days in Australia or the slave days in the US but we got plenty of room for improvement. The value of a stock investment will fluctuate. Diversification does not eliminate the risk of investment loss. Dollar cost averaging does not assure a profit or protect against loss. |

Depends on who you ask. Most are treated quite well, given welfare and even driver's licenses.A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. -Josh Billings

Oh yes, the Al Quaeda ones are restrained. Once it is known they are being deported, they are jailed, confined in large camps, etc. But the ones all ready here, working, continue in their lives while documentation is checked out, refugee status, etc.A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. -Josh Billings

how embarrassing (for Australia that is). I assumed that the detention camps were following some major power's lead in its treatment of refugees. Our PM is very fond of your president, perhaps you could bring it to his attention, and then the children would be freed. Or US 60 minutes or something - human rights horror down under.AT YOUR CERVIX - Jac |

i don't know where vic gets her information, or how many illegal immigrants there are in iowa. i do know that i spent a number of years living less than 20 miles from the mexican border, and the treatment of illegal immigrant children in the US is nothing to be proud of.as a general rule, illegal immigrants aren't detained for more than 24 hours. they are put on busses and sent back south into mexico usually in less than 8 hours. and yes, are then on their way back into the US. the crossing is perilous, much more so these days, and very expensive. and, there have been numerous studies done on the econmic impact of immigants, legal and illegal, on the US. popular belief holds that they're a drain on society, collecting welfare and social security benefits while paying little to nothing in taxes; committing crimes and burdening our criminal justice systems, etc... in fact, overwhelmingly, the major comprehensive studies done have found the opposite, that, that the immigrants have a positive effect overall, economically and socially, on the country. ~~~ no bush family members in the white house again. ever.

You know, Beej, there may be some parts of our country where children are detained in such a manner. I just speak of the ones around here who have had their Visa's expire, are here illegally, etc. We do have a lot of illegals in our country, Bush wants to give them work visa's anyway, which has stirred up a lot of controversy. But I am sure we have children detained, too.A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. -Josh Billings

Nosmokes, Iowa is delusied with illegal immigrants. Our meat packing plants brings them in by the thousands. Of course it is perilous for some, for many. But it is a choice they make when leaving their country.Last summer a traincar was found packed with illegals in southern Iowa, all of them dead from the heat. Very sad. The majority of illegals are treated fairly well, and yes, deported immediately, not years later. A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. -Josh Billings
