The Tar Sands are Not Entertainment. Glamorizing the Tar Sands as a fictional backdrop to “The Hobbit” film makes a mockery of the growing global resistance to this highly destructive project.

          • Stephen Michael Amy Lilly- Portland is pretty good (we have about 8% commuters traveling by bike, and a lot of that is in the rain). We're nowhere near the level of bicycling as a place such as Amsterdam (we're not there yet)

As for Sandy Stone... You need to read the Coming Low Carbon Economy report by MCKINSEY. What do you think is going happen? $200.00/barrel oil? Sure and we all continue on just as we are? How much will gas cost? How much will diesel cost? How will your standard of living change? For a McGill graduate you seem very ill considered.

What would be really responsible would be for the film to boycott the tar sands as a location. To use it as an inspiration for a faked set, put that in the credits and talk about how the tar sands inspired it during their publicity shoots. And then still donate money to ending the tar sands and helping the people its hurt.

                • Sherry Adams Even then the production company would have a vested interest in it's continuation, at least for as long as production. If it was successfully shut down during production they could sue the nation for damages. Why would they want it to be shut down when they are benefiting from it?

                • Vinny Vanchesco I think anything that highlights this disaster on the world stage is a good thing. James Cameron's visit (and his use of the tarsands as the basis for the mining operation scenes in Avatar) did wonders for awareness about the tarsands. Apparently Avatar II will be even more focused on this. The royalties are peanuts compared to the profits made by both the lease holders AND the film itself.

Neither the federal government nor the Alberta government has done anything to protect the other 99% of Canadians from the oil sands industry grabbing more than its fair share. This lack of rules is pitting one group of Canadians against another. The rest of us outside the oil sands bubble are losing. And it is about to get much worse.
The Big Grab, a series of 9 articles in The Vancouver Observer, delves deep into government & industry data to illuminate the details:

Enbridge is more than just the company that delivers natural gas to homes across Ontario. It's also the largest shipper of tar sands oil, and is responsible for shipping enough of Canada’s oil and gas each year to equal, when burned, half of Canada’s entire annual release of global warming pollu
