Correction: HUD says email, spokesperson on reopening projects was bogus
12:30 PM CDT on Monday, August 28, 2006
Officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Development have denied a change in plans for New Orleans public housing stock.
An apparently bogus email circulated with an address of HANO.US had stated that HUD was changing its policy regarding public housing and would reopen all of the developments.
It also “quoted” HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson as saying they had made a mistake in their original policy.
In addition, a person who said he was a representative of HUD made a similar announcement at a New Orleans reconstruction meeting attended by Governor Kathleen Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.
WWLTV.com published a breaking news alert announcing the bogus information and sent out a text email with the same information.
HUD officials corrected the bogus report and said they stand by their original plans.
