Yes Men Return With New Stunt: Phony Herald Tribune

Published: June 24, 2009
BRUSSELS—The artist group known as the Yes Men has followed up last year’s fake New York Times stunt with a spoof version of the paper’s cousin, the International Herald Tribune, creating a collaboration with Greenpeace to stress the urgent need for international action on global warming.

The duo distributed 50,000 copies of the faux paper in Brussels — home of the European Parliament, where leaders were meeting last week to discuss the climate crisis — as well as other European cities. The fake Herald Tribune featured headlines like "Heads of State Agree on Historic Climate-Saving Deal," which refers to a $50 billion agreement for "climate protection," as well as the more facetious "Atmosphere Named World Heritage Site." The Brussels meeting failed to reach on agreement on meaningful policy initiatives on climate change, however, so the online version of the Yes Men’s Herald Tribune has been updated with a "correction." Its headline: "World Actually Not Saved."
