They were able to clean her off with some Dawn dish soap, but it cost $26,000 and she died a week later.

[–]Decatf 374 points375 points ago

The clean up effort created jobs though.

[–]tling 96 points97 points ago

And the jobs added to the GDP. Economic growth is always good, right?

[–]Bladewing10 39 points40 points ago

So what you're saying is, we should spill more oil? Brilliant!

[–]GloriousInternetUser 24 points25 points ago

That's how the economy works don't you know? The more problems there are the more money that can be made!

[–]Condorcet_Winner 19 points20 points ago

Ah the broken window fallacy. That's always fun.

[–]Let_Them_Eat_Money 63 points64 points ago

If only I could up-vote this 100 times. I am still laughing.

[–]mstrypnts 1815 points1816 points ago

"Can I have that phone please?" Why do some people think they have the right to confiscate your phone just because you recorded something they didn't want on tape?

[–]OiaHandoma 772 points773 points ago

They probably do it because they know a lot of people would get insecure and just hand it over.

[–]topazsparrow 519 points520 points ago

Yup, There's nothing stopping anyone from asking in a very stern way. Taking it is a different matter though.

[–]rowboatcop 354 points355 points ago

[–]maccabeus 125 points126 points ago

This is the same reason that people talk to the police without a lawyer present. Never do this.

[–]JumpingJesus 80 points81 points ago

Yeah. They immediately go into damage control mode to try to eliminate the obvious PR disaster that an oil spill out of their novelty rig could become.

I mean shit, if they can't even stop their silly drink fountain from springing a leak at a PR event...

[–]borntorunathon 63 points64 points ago

I mean shit, if they can't even stop their silly drink fountain from springing a leak at a PR event...

To be fair, I'm sure they didn't have a crack team of their top engineers build the novelty derrick. Don't get me wrong, this is an hilariously apt mishap, and shell is a terribly corrupt company. But let's not get carried away and act like this is any kind of indicator of the quality of Shell's work.

[–]its_so_on 176 points177 points ago

You can order anyone to do anything you want. (To me, this sounded like a polite yet stern, unmistakable order.)

As part of proving my point, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to upvote me... now please.

"Because this is fucking hilarious!"

[–]play3393 97 points98 points ago

Is that what he actually said? I can't make it out.

[–]hampsted 219 points220 points ago

I think it's something like: "Obviously you have a mess up here."

[–]sanimalp 233 points234 points ago

He said something like "It looks like you guys have a mess up there", i think.

[–]RIP_my_old_account 229 points230 points ago

"Can I have your phone please?"

"Sure, that'll be 300 bucks."

[–]Cryptan 109 points110 points ago

For that disaster I'd ask for a couple grand. And even then, I'd have my video already uploaded to my dropbox which I then have the ability to restore it if it were deleted.

[–]86Mitso 60 points61 points ago

straight up, 50k$ in 2 hours in my hand or im posting on youtube.

Id still post it on youtube :)

[–]JBLikesHeavyMetal 63 points64 points ago

[–]USheep 65 points66 points ago

[–]knellotron 53 points54 points ago

I would have offered it to him for free, after he signed a two year contract for $100 per month with me.

[–]Blackmaths4tj 11 points12 points ago

I'd say it would cost about tree fiddy

Somebody Make This:

A smartphone app that can be triggered via a global hotkey, and which as soon as it is triggered will instantly start streaming audio/video to a cloud service which the public can immediately tune in to. (Optional: Make the cloud service also post RSS/email/twitter/etc. alerts (or post a reddit submission, or alert pre-designated phone numbers with a robocall) that there's some shit going on that people might watch). Also, if the user has been recording A/V while or just before pressing that hotkey, then this recording from just prior to the triggering should be uploaded as well.

[–]Forgot_Your_Password 124 points125 points ago

as soon as i press "stop" my videos get automatically uploaded to google +. Even if someone were to take my phone, so long as I have a data connection, the video will get backed up.

[–]sifeliz 105 points106 points ago

The new Google+ app is the shit! Not only does it upload it immediately but it also automatically resizes it so you can store as many as you want for FREE!

[–]TwirlySocrates 130 points131 points ago

Until I heard the man say that, it wasn't much of a PR fail to me.

[–]hmasing 114 points115 points ago

Because an uncontrollable oil derrick where it can't be stopped by someone in corporate isn't a PR failure? :-)

[–]RacerX2112 128 points129 points ago

mildly amusing and ironic, yes...PR failure? It's a freaking corporate party...not the Gulf of Mexico.

[–]throwaway_lgbt666 46 points47 points ago

'sure can I have yours?'

[–]grandoiseau 22 points23 points ago

It costs nothing to ask, and most people will get scared and hand it over.

[–]well_golly 17 points18 points ago

This is correct. I've had a couple of incidents where a cop has stopped me for an ordinary ticket (10 mph over type of thing), and said:

"Can I have a look in your trunk?"

(With a cheerful smile) "No."

"Any reason why you won't let me look in your trunk?"

(Staying cheerful) "Well, you don't have a right to just arbitrarily look, and I figure someone like me should try to remind the police of these sorts of boundaries."

Neither time did it escalate. They just gave me a small smile as if to say "Touché!", and gave me the speeding ticket I would have gotten anyway.

I know what you are all going to say, and it is true: Tl;dr: I am white and over 25.

Most underated comment in this thread. Exactly what she sounds like.

[–]philasurfer 1176 points1177 points ago

why didn't she just move out of the way? She stood there like an effing moron.

[–]SpermWhale 583 points584 points ago

Because she is representing all the dolphins and shorebirds when there's an oil spill.

[–]tehgreatist 373 points374 points ago

sure sounded like one

[–]MF_DTA 99 points100 points ago

Shore sounded like one.

[–]ARCHA1C 1239 points1240 points ago

Because she's 250 years old.

She's holding up pretty well, all things considered.

There's only so much that modern medical technology can do to extend the human lifespan, even when you are swimming in oil money like that old bitch.

I WEAR YOUR MILKSHAKE!

[–]i_rock 19 points20 points ago

Hey man I'm in the same boat as you.I tought that was a classic case of old cowboy oil man.

[–]AnswersWithAQuestion 4 points5 points ago

Did it look, to anyone else, like the water spout seemed to continue moving toward her as she moved to the side? That might explain it. Still, I don't see why she didn't just back away.

[–]BangkokPadang 10 points11 points ago

The problem was that she didn't sidestep. She backed up in the direction of the flow, so even after she backed up one step it was still squirting her.

[–]andyboylan 37 points38 points ago

maybe she loves having stuff sprayed over her

[–]pornmonger 21 points22 points ago

[–]happyphilter 54 points55 points ago

She stood there as if she wanted to be sprayed, almost like this was set up or something.

[–]trojanstallion 21 points22 points ago

YouTube comment:

"Why are old people so fucking life incompetent. oh my god this thing is squirting me so I'm just gonna stand her and let it get all over me while I shriek like a fucking muppet baby. move 8 inches to the right or left."

[–]fancy-chips 6 points7 points ago

I'm currently holding my nose with my hand to keep me from laughing so hard I can't breathe at work.

I don't want people asking me what it is because then if I tell them they'll think I'm a bad person.

[–]TheDukeDude 47 points48 points ago

I listened to that part about ten times. I still can't figure out what she's trying to say over the sound of my own laughter.

[–]dontspamjay 717 points718 points ago

I don't ever want to work at a place that doesn't think that's funny.

[–]paffle 92 points93 points ago

I was surprised that no-one in the audience seemed to be laughing. They all seemed to be so worried about an old lady getting some wine on her.

[–]HeBoughtALot 137 points138 points ago

Fake mini oil spill on super old lady: HORRIFYING.

Catastrophic spill in major body of water: NO PROBLEM! CONTAINED!

[–]SensibleMadness 24 points25 points ago

I get the feeling that the old lady could ruin every one of them and is not known for her sense of humor. Otherwise, the place would be filled with raucous laughter.

[–]alcakd 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, it seemed as though she were someone of importance (hence her being up there in the first place).

[–]CUNTBERT_RAPINGTON 9 points10 points ago

She was the widow of the man who designed the rig they made the model of. I could see why they'd be horrified.

[–]scribeofmedicine 159 points160 points ago

holy hell that place really looks like it could use someone with a sense of humor. I'm not that funny, but don't take things too seriously and make lighthearted jokes in a pretty serious environment (emergency room) and people seem to appreciate it.

[–]mindctrlpankak 65 points66 points ago

Reminds me of a time I went to a work lunch at a nearby restaurant. I went to shake the ketchup and it got a good bit on my shirt. I just kinda looked up and started laughing.

I thought "Son of a bitch, all I can do is laugh it off"

Because if I had done anything other than that, the situation would have just been tense. I said ah well, wiped off the ketchup and kept eating.

EDIT: And I didn't sit there while the ketchup was pouring onto my shirt like a moron ಠ_ಠ

[–]scribeofmedicine 29 points30 points ago

one of the ER docs told me friend once that if you make a mistake never act like it's a big deal. It will put everyone's mind at ease. IE he opened up a mini portable otoscope in the room and a bunch of parts went flying all over the place. He just said laugh it off or act like it isn't a huge deal even if it is.

[–]Bognar 61 points62 points ago

There's a fine line if you're in a situation where people might already be nervous. Imagine being in the doctor's office while all his equipment was exploding as he cackled maniacally.

[–]scribeofmedicine 15 points16 points ago

hahaha that was a hilarious image. What I'm saying is try not to make people more nervous than they are. I think I would rather have the doc chuckle and say oops than mumble under his breath nervously and walk away without explanation

[–]Reductive 5 points6 points ago

Oh my god this is absolutely hilarious. I can't shake the image of a stodgy old doctor trying to open some newfangled device and it just falls apart/explodes in his hands. Inside he is livid: "Oh shitohshitohshit I am never going to be able to repair this thing. This is going to cost a fortune and every single appointment after this will be delayed and..." But he puts on this stoic demeanor while his valuable equipment is destroyed in front of him.

Okay now it is kind of sad. But it was hilarious.

edit: One time I had a dentist do the opposite of this. He was doing something on a tooth, which involved isolating it with one of those little rubber sheets and a metal clamp around the tooth. At some point during the procedure, I heard and felt a metallic snap and the dentist says "oops." Needless to say, this was absolutely terrifying and I almost pissed myself. The clamp had merely slipped off the tooth and everything was fine, but I made it clear to him later that "oops" is a bad thing to say with the patient right there.

[–]maaaze 23 points24 points ago

Did you say gabagod din a badhibinturna gadagibble as it happened?

[–]MrGiggleParty 212 points213 points ago

It's like she was doing some chant to stop the wetness.

[–]Electric_Whisper 124 points125 points ago

Obviously, she had it under control but they stopped her chant.

[–]Brownt0wn_ 67 points68 points ago

[–]soundofvictory 57 points58 points ago

[–]never_knows_best 12 points13 points ago

This show is on Netflix.

[–]thatfatbastard[!] 108 points109 points ago

Did the guy at the lectern remind anybody else of Gabe from "The Office"?

[–]humya 307 points308 points ago

someone give that old white woman $40 billion for the clean up effort.

[–]HiddenTemple 128 points129 points ago

Yeah, that's what registered as the funniest part to me. That, to her, this was UNACCEPTABLE and she was SUCH A VICTIM, and will bitch and moan about it nonstop for months. But when there's an actual oil leak/spill, "well it was just an accident and people are doing their best to fix it." It's classic rich people thinking they understand a situation even though they'll never understand because they're never a true victim of anything truly outrageous.

I hope I'm wrong about the people in this video, but I really don't think I am. My heart truly goes out to that poor woman's ruined coat. I just pray that she has 2,000 other coats to replace it.

[–]stappard 114 points115 points ago

That's a whole lot of conjecture to get angry about...

[–]Ceejae 14 points15 points ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way reading that.

[–]TrolleyPower 77 points78 points ago

To be fair, you completely pulled that first paragraph out your ass.

[–]loonytoad[S] 33 points34 points ago

Well in her defence, if I agreed to help out some big company with their PR and in return they pissed some sort of booze all over my best clothes, I'd be pretty upset too.

[–]HiddenTemple 27 points28 points ago

Actually, if that was me I would have busted out laughing immediately at the irony of the event. And all honesty, if I'm upset I'm going to either deeply sigh or yell out "DAMNIT!" . . . Not sit there for 20 seconds holding my shirt looking at every single face in the front row as if I was asking "Can you believe this?! Can you?! And you?! Did everyone see this?!?!" Yes. We saw it. SUX2BU, now GTFO and get cleaned up.

[–]Squalor- 616 points617 points ago

[–]MixMixBrad 16 points17 points ago

OH my GOD! An attractive woman is getting attention!!! SRS! SAVE US!

[–]lolwut314 132 points133 points ago

ummm... So I got an eerie flashback from an episode of Saved By The Bell from back in the day - anyone else get that as well?

It was the episode where Bay Side High got all this money from an Oil Tycoon - and in return the school let him drill on their campus. Zack and friends loved it at first, then hated the fact that all these oil fields would be popping up around them. Zack held a presentation and squirted oil all over the tycoon, just like this video.

Ok, I'll stop now.

[–]Plurity 10 points11 points ago

O GOD THE NOSTALGIA

[–]Intangible360 863 points864 points ago

Something seems off with this video, I can't tell if it's because of the fakeness that goes along with any PR stunt or because the whole thing is a fabrication.

Edit 7: Wherein Gawker confirms that the whole thing is fake. http://gawker.com/5916661/hilarious-video-of-shell-oil-party-disaster-is-fake-unfortunately

To the doubters who made me feel like the bad guy in all of this, I respond with some wise words from Flexo, "Thanks, I appreciate that. Nah, I'm joshing with you, that was quite annoying!"

Edit 6: OmvendtNinja appears to have done some great detective work below and confirmed the suspicions that this was fake. I went through and did the same NS and MX lookups so the following is all easily repeatable for anyone else to do. Please point out any errors I might have missed.

http://www.theyesmen.org The description on their website: "Impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them. Our targets are leaders and big corporations who put profits ahead of everything else."

Edit 5: I want to address some of the criticisms raised. Firstly, I only ever said that I was skeptical of the video, not that I was starting a new website to decry some new secret OWS conspiracy. I'm entirely willing to be proven wrong, I haven't even decided if the video is better if genuine or a fabrication, pretty hilarious either way if you ask me!

How did they get the actors, costumes, etc? If, for example, it were staged by Occupy protesters I don't imagine that it would be difficult to get volunteers, the volunteers just dress for the event. The biggest hurdle would be renting the lounge, producing the poster we see at the start of the video and rigging the cake/pump thing.

How could they afford to rent the lounge? This is probably the best objection I have seen, but how costly would it really be? Maybe they know someone in the building who is sympathetic? Haven't we seen stranger hoaxes before

Edit 4: I tried listening to the video while keeping my eyes closed. While doing this several parts ring false. The old widow's response is so bizarre that I don't think you can get a read on it but if you listen to the crowd's reaction it's oddly delayed and then in unison, which doesn't make sense. Also, you can hear one guy out of sync who appears to be responding in an almost sarcastic manner not taking the situation seriously. Lastly when the cameraman is being escorted out I think he says, "Obviously you have a mess on your hands." The way that he says this and the wording seems so unnatural that if this were the only thing "wrong" with the video I would still suspect the veracity of the entire video.

Edit 3: I'm going to feel awful silly if I'm wrong but Grande_Yarbles pointed out something that seems like the clearest evidence that this video was likely staged.

Watch the old lady closely... she starts to make a shocked face and raises her hands up a moment before the geyser. Then there's this incredulous pause afterwards and the 'engineer' stands there instead of, you know, putting his hand in front of the spray or something like that. Reminded me of a skit the first time I saw it.

I have linked the video a second before her reaction to illustrate this point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=NMUFci_V4mU#t=29s

Edit 2:

Below is a link to the twitter feed of the guy who uploaded the video wherein he describes himself as an Occupy protester. To be clear, I have nothing against the Occupy movement I was just adding it to the list of unlikely things that occur in the video. https://twitter.com/#!/kstrel

Edit 1: Upon a second viewing it seems too good to be true. This occupy protester makes it into this private Shell party, only to witness the engineer of Shell's new well struggle to operate its model and then impotent to stop its malfunction while spraying oil in the face of an incredulous old widow. The cherry on top of this whole fiasco is that the person taking the video gets strong-armed out of the room and the presumed shell employee doing so attempts to confiscate his phone. It's like an occupy protester's wet dream, color me skeptical.

Great work. This confirms that it is fake. The Yes Men do a pretty good job but it's always little things that get them caught. When they managed to organize a fake press conference for the US Chamber of Commerce it all unraveled because the actual employee that showed up had business cards whereas The Yes Man didn't.

[–]OmvendtNinja 14 points15 points ago

and it appears the website is hosted also at the same server as theyesmen.org

[–]VA1N 10 points11 points ago

And theyesmen.org has the following on their site as listed above. Nice sleuthing!

"Impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them. Our targets are leaders and big corporations who put profits ahead of everything else."

[–]zappini 165 points166 points ago

If staged, it was a very well funded prank. Renting the SpaceBase isn't cheap.

http://www.spaceneedle.com/events/

[–]XSeveredX 153 points154 points ago

As well as getting a bunch of middle aged men to all come, dress in suits, make a bunch of posters around the room, a model-sized ice cap with a shell logo on it, engineer a miniature oil Derrick that actually works, and then even give all the security small badges to add to the realism.

If this is fake, it's absolutely the best fake I've ever seen.

[–]Dougawl 50 points51 points ago

I just called the Space needle and they said Shell rented the room out last night. This looks pretty legit to me.

[–]N8CCRG 21 points22 points ago

Please do some research on The Yes Men. Someone claiming to be Shell rented it out last night. Has anyone attempted to get Shell's comment on it? Why has no actual news picked this up yet? Presumably they're attempting to verify if it's true and either having a hard time doing so, or have verified it's false.

[–]orange_aurelius 94 points95 points ago

Regarding the video's authenticity, we can at least be reasonably sure that this video was filmed at the Space Needle's banquet lounge:

Landmarks as seen in video

Landmarks as seen in the Space Needle website virtual tour

As for the rest, for this to be fake it seems that a lot of actors would need to be hired, in addition to the rental of the banquet hall. Also, lots of props, costumes, etc. would need to be procured. That doesn't mean that some person or organization didn't actually pay to fake all of that, but it makes it seem less likely to me. I suppose if this video becomes very popular we'll see more investigation, and if Shell denies this ever happened, even deeper investigation.

As Intangible360 mentioned here, I think a the 'fake/staged' feeling people get from this is because events like this give off a natural PR vibe, and PR is very often (some might say constantly) engaged in creating 'fake' situations.

In any event, thanks for being skeptical (PSA: It's very important to be able to think critically and clearly of things-- especially things that agree with your sensibilities. It makes you less prone to manipulation via those sensibilities). Your claims were what prompted me to look into this a little more deeply, for which I am grateful.

[–]NoNomad 7 points8 points ago

The first images in the video were shot at the space needle, but there's really nothing indicating the actual PR event is in the same location other than the blown out windows that appear to be in a tall building and the same lighting. At no point during the reference shots to the location do we see the same presentation set up or people that are involved in the "PR Fiasco".

The biggest red flag is the short interaction at the end with the PR guy and the camera operator. It's a bit of a stretch to think they would have noticed the guy shooting the event with a cell phone in the first place, let alone be worried about him when there's obviously a very upset investor/rich white lady in the room. It also seems a little odd that this is a "private meeting" yet they're fine letting some dude with a cell phone shoot the whole thing, but that might just be the environment we now live in. All in all I think this is a pretty elaborate fake using actors/volunteers and set to coincide with an actual event.

[–]ncshooter426 8 points9 points ago

So I looked at the old lady again - she's holding her glass there waiting. The glass begins to fill and she moves slightly off to the side where it continues to spew out (the jets were pointing the wrong way). Her right hand does not move until after her left hand has moved the glass. It was not a preemptive movement, nor was anyone elses movements out of sync. If it was staged - they suck at it either way.

I don't understand the point of faking the video, nor the impact it would have either way. Making shell look bad? Much easier (cheaper) ways to do that than some hard to hear cellphone vid. If anything, producing a fake video would hurt the cause far more than caputing something funny.

[–]Linear-A 47 points48 points ago

I will play devil's advocate here. 1) Not everyone invited to such an event is an insider who has the best interests of Shell in mind at all times. They are investors, potential investors, and even friends of investors and people involved with the project. Some of them work for Shell, but not all of them do. 2) The guy who was taking the video might have been happy to delete the video if the situation had been handled better by security. The way it was handled the video taker likely took the security guy's actions personally and wanted revenge. I bet if a higher up at shell had taken him to lunch and shown him personal attention and given him an apology the video never would have made it beyond a circle of friends.

[–]jfawcett 15 points16 points ago

that's an awfully expensive room to rent just to stage a video.

[–]Scutage 41 points42 points ago

Yep, the whole thing looks...rigged.

[–]FentonBailey 64 points65 points ago

The piss weak Shell logo on a sheet is my biggest red flag.

[–]ed4649 48 points49 points ago

I thought that was an iceberg or something "arctic".

[–]simsimulation 4 points5 points ago

Please, if they can't get the red wine fountain working, how would they know how to print out a high-resolution logo?

[–]GetOffMyHighHorse 42 points43 points ago

I'll say here what I told the YouTubes: Their only fail was on step 5...otherwise oil companies have this down to a science!

  1. Build New Model of Oil Rig

  2. Observe Signs of Trouble with Rig

  3. Top Management: "Just go for it - you can't hurt it"

  4. Observe Rig Failure Causing Uncontrollable Spill: " 'Turn it off!' 'I can't turn it off!' "

  5. Seek and Destroy Recorded Evidence of Incident

  6. Profits!

[–]topazsparrow 43 points44 points ago

I'm at work so cannot watch too closely... what exactly happened here?

[–]zf420 110 points111 points ago

Here's some more info

Quote from the page:

Logan sent us this explanation:

“It all started with a malfunction.... of the event's centerpiece, a scale model of the Kulluk, one of the rigs heading up north, which was sitting in a basin of liquor (rum and coke?) next to an ice sculpture in the shape of an iceberg.

I guess the photo-op was meant to be a symbolic tapping of the Arctic. There was a ridiculous three-foot-high scale model of their Arctic drilling rig, the Kulluk, and the mini-rig had a tap to pump liquor for the guests.

“The guest of honor was an elderly Japanese man introduced as the original Chief Engineer of the Kulluk rig who used to work at Mitsui back in the '80s. But when the man went to turn on the ‘rig,’ the liquor went everywhere - and the first to be hit was another elderly guest, the widow of the man who'd actually designed the Kulluk back in the 1980s.

“The guy in charge kept asking the old engineer to fix it but he obviously had no idea how to turn it off. Shell's PR people got REALLY worked up, and the designer’s widow started yelling. At this point the guy who was presenting the new ad campaign told me to turn off my camera and got pretty aggressive.”

Logan (who grew up on Vashon Island) helped capture an equally wacky moment last year when Obama told him at a fundraiser that Bradley Manning “broke the law.” That's expected to have an effect on the army private’s case.

[–]SomeGuyWithABoner 32 points33 points ago

Jesus I thought she was being burned based on how she was screaming.

[–]danpascooch 12 points13 points ago

yeah seriously, just put your mouth under the stream and get drunk

[–]DirectCharge 70 points71 points ago

but he obviously had no idea how to turn it off.

Foreshadowing?

[–]linkseyi 12 points13 points ago

an ice sculpture in the shape of an iceberg.

Isn't that just a large piece of ice?

[–]dingoperson 22 points23 points ago

It kind of looks like a tiny oil tower that starts to pee oil in a glorious arc directly at an old woman and nobody can shut it down.

[–]european_impostor 43 points44 points ago

Dont forget the part where she sits in the stream and starts gobbling like a turkey.

Dat ass on chocolate saviour woman...

[–]tannhauser 14 points15 points ago

A true gent would run up there and splash himself in a humorous but yet nonchalant manor and then tell everyone it cool to piss your pants.

I remember this old dude in my elementary class did this.

[–]nodnodwinkwink 16 points17 points ago

At least the old lady didn't choke to death on the "oil"...

[–]greenbee202 16 points17 points ago

[–]MAKE_MY_ANUS_FAMOUS 11 points12 points ago

it sounds like the banned the guy from Scotland.

[–]karbon92 6 points7 points ago

"Why are you still filming?"

"Obviously you have a mess."

"Can I have that phone please?"

Why do people think they have ANY type of leverage when they ask for someone else's phone, when they know they can't legally do anything about it?

[–]lordofthefart 15 points16 points ago

Is that Gabe at the podium?

[–]forwormsbravepercy 5 points6 points ago

no, you cannot have the man's phone

[–]dumb_question_girl 4 points5 points ago

Is this real?

[–]gmnitsua 84 points85 points ago

Old lady gets drink poured at her. To senile to move out of the way or deflect the stream so she just stands there baffling like an idiot until someone can help her. I'm guessing this is fake. That or God help old women like this.

[–]timmymac 198 points199 points ago

She probably still drives.

[–]bradlee92 72 points73 points ago

In Florida.

[–]miked4o7[!] 19 points20 points ago

[–]Phyco_Boy 23 points24 points ago

TIL Dont stand next to this woman when shit hits the fan.

[–]Airazz 59 points60 points ago

But do stand behind her. She will get most of the shit and you will come off clean.

[–]brownestrabbit 18 points19 points ago

You must not have any grandparents or know any elderly folk.

[–]HammerAttack 9 points10 points ago

That HAS to be the 'Yes Men', right? Very funny either way.

[–]KeithUK7 14 points15 points ago

What an ass.

[–]greenbee202 40 points41 points ago

Thats the same sound my Girlfriend makes when I squirt on her!!!

Edit: Girlfriend Tissue paper

Edit2: same sound Theres no sound... its just thin paper

Edit3: I masturbate too much

[–]bomi3ster 33 points34 points ago

Sears catalog

[–]karenbelieveme 4 points5 points ago

Ok so if this is fake, who paid for it, and what was its purpose? Seems pretty expensive to get all these actors, build a model, rent a room, film it.. for what? Occupy glory? Occupy can't even come up with a unified mission statement, who is bankrolling this 'skit'? Your skepticism is warranted, but your story of it being fake doesn't add up either.

[–]Grakos 7 points8 points ago

Do old people usually forget how to move away from something bothersome?

[–]allittakes222 3 points4 points ago

You're all way too gullible. That's what is truly outrageous.

[–]rtyson 9 points10 points ago

Why is gabe from the office working for shell?

[–]ErikAllenAwake 5 points6 points ago

"Turn it off! I can't!"

Oil Rigs, in a nutshell.

[–]JoNiKaH 5 points6 points ago

"Can I have that phone please" Does no one like getting filmed anymore ?

[–]StruanDirk 4 points5 points ago

"Can I have that phone please?" Yes, when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

[–]cheapdrinks 4 points5 points ago

Can't wait to watch the live feed from the robot that ends up fixing it

[–]asmalldrinkofmilk 2 points3 points ago

What was his response what the guy said 'why are you still filming'?

[–]FlyByDusk 2 points3 points ago

Can someone explain what was going on in the vid?

[–]munge_me_not 5 points6 points ago

Someone thought it'd be cool to have a model of an oil derrick that probably shoots out fucking wine or some rich kid kool aid and it malfunctioned or wasn't set up right. Probably intentionally by the staff of the catering company. LOL!

[–]Sionysion 2 points3 points ago

Shame it wasn't BP... could have some good references to a particular event....

[–]fench 1 point2 points ago

I think I'll just leave this here, just because its more family friendly to laugh at someone when you know they are evil bastards.

[–]SuperDestructo 0 points1 point ago

Gonna put another one in for fake. It just seems off.

[–]PeterMus 2 points3 points ago

"Can I have your phone please?". I think the only proper response to this question is "Fuck you".

[–]ELasshole 0 points1 point ago

I saw nothing of value in that video.

[–]DirkIsGestolen 1 point2 points ago

Everyone who thinks this is real is having their comments up voted. Reddit community is Reddiculous. I found out this was on Reddit from another Jalopnik, saying how it was fake and looky here it made the Front page of Reddit.

[–]zbakes 2 points3 points ago

[–]acupofjoe 2 points3 points ago

Turned out to be fake... but that old lady was still funnier than hell!

[–]tapemeasure2 2 points3 points ago

[–]sanfranciscoooooo 2 points3 points ago

Sorry to break everyone's hearts but this was apparently a fake: http://gawker.com/5916661/hilarious-video-of-shell-oil-party-disaster-is-fake-unfortunately

[–]Vaypo 2 points3 points ago

Fake!

[–]Victor_UnNettoyeur 32 points33 points ago

Pretty sure this must be staged.

[–]iamjacksprofile 206 points207 points ago

"Ok guys, now I want the 30 of you to remember to meet at the Space Needle Monday at 5PM to film that little bit about with broken drink fountain we talked about.

Bob, you said you paid the $10,000 deposit already to rent the Space Needle right? Ok good, and you talked to your Grandma about getting sprayed with Rum and she's cool with it right? Excellent.

Those mother fuckers at Shell will rue the day when this video hits the internet."

[–]elessarjd 23 points24 points ago

Thank you. There's always gotta be a "FAKE!" person in the comments with this sort of thing.

[–]swiftb3 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, that's definitely the private event area in the Space Needle, so the expense of it is a strong indicator of real.

[–]loonytoad[S] 24 points25 points ago

This is the guy's twitter page, if it's a fake he's running with it:

https://twitter.com/#!/kstrel

[–]facefacy 43 points44 points ago

middle-click this link. I've done it 10 times so far and every time it opens up in the current tab, instead of a new tab. Who is the evil mastermind behind this at Twitter?

[–]RegularExpression 16 points17 points ago

It just opens in a new tab here (FF 13). I'm wondering what is causing it on your side.

[–]Rehehelly 10 points11 points ago

Opens in a new tab in Chrome (19.0.1084.52 m) for me too.

[–]zuperxtreme 15 points16 points ago

TESTING:

https://twitter.com/#!/kstrel

https://www.google.com

https://www.google.com/#!/test

EDIT: Looks like Chrome opens URL's with a hash-bang in the same tab, FF opens in a new window.

EDIT2: Looks like it's a bug in RES

[–]Synth3t1c 9 points10 points ago

I got a new tab in Chrome, middle clicking...

[–]QBontje 3 points4 points ago

It does for me, I find it incredibly annoying and I don't get how this happens. Right-clicking and opening in a new tab works fine.

[–]N8CCRG 8 points9 points ago

Looks like it could be a Yes Men type of thing. Haven't heard anything from a reliable news source yet (just the "X"-ist sites), or any one who has attempted to get a comment from Shell. Seems dubious until we can get more. In the mean time, the backstory of an OWS person sneaking into this uninvited and recording and having something this staged looking happen sounds WAY too convenient to be true.

[–]iamjacksprofile 10 points11 points ago

Broken drink fountain at a company party? I'm surprised Shell hasn't hired an outside PR firm to run damage control on this disaster.

[–]KingIndifference 8 points9 points ago

Nice try Shell Oil Exec

[–]SenorSpicyBeans 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one not seeing the "epic fail" in this? So some old bitch gets liquid on her nice blouse. How exactly is that the end of the world?

This video shouldn't even be a thing, much less on the front page.

[–]bibowski 1 point2 points ago

I heard the guy at the end say Skylon tower... which is in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Why does it say Space Needle at the beginning?

[–]jfrizzera 3 points4 points ago

The more working parts, the better the chance for failure.

My concern is for the old woman, did they wash her down with Dawn, wrap her in a towel and then use a blow dryer before returning her to the wild?

[–]one_dalmatian 3 points4 points ago

[–]mynamegoeshere 11 points12 points ago

Adventure Time, I think.

[–]GeekedOutFlow 0 points1 point ago

That's the source! From the episode "No One Can Hear You." Creepy as hell, man.

[–]TheOriginalMyth 7 points8 points ago

Seems fake to me, but either way its hilarious!

[–]Deluxe754 5 points6 points ago

Why would this be fake? I really want to know why you think this.

[–]happyphilter 12 points13 points ago

It just seems odd. The lady just stands there and takes it, the other guy talking particularly loud and clearly about not being able to turn it off. It just seems off and something the occupy people would totally do. Edit: Also, searching for the chief engineer or the design guys widow(the people in the video) nothing can be found, in fact the occupy websites are the only places so find this "information". I'll keep looking, but I am skeptical.

[–]TheOriginalMyth 14 points15 points ago

Well one it seems in this guys interest to make big business look bad (Seems to be in the occupy movement, and because of some of his earlier tweets), but also because if they are able to get the video to go viral their is quite a bit of money to be made through Google AdSense

[–]XSeveredX 2 points3 points ago

This doesn't mean a thing.

I feel crazy for thinking some of these "fake" comments are shell interns but with so many random comments saying "obviously fake" but then when asked why, and you give reasons like that.... something smells very fishy here

[–]tferguson_ 6 points7 points ago

It's too perfect/funny, like it was a setup for a skit show or something.

[–]seanalltogether 0 points1 point ago

Because the old lady is a terrible actor, watch her the entire time, not just when hit but afterwards as well.

[–]velvetvillain 2 points3 points ago

Shell has invented a device that shows the future in a miniature way!

[–]I2obiN 2 points3 points ago

You know I hate to be the guy that calls 'fake', but..

1 - The lady's reaction, okay she's old but why does she let it just spray all over her.

2 - Why do the guys do nothing?

3 - Why does the guy just openly announce to everyone 'he can't turn it off'.

4 - The trajectory of the liquid makes no sense, if it was meant to fill up her cup, how could it possibly fly in her direction at that velocity? It makes no sense, the nozzle would have to be more then upside down, it would have to be pointed directly at the woman the way the fluid is coming out.

Sorry but the woman's reaction as well seems badly acted too.

[–]salmoxe 0 points1 point ago

How is this convincing to anyone? Fake as fuck. Old lady overreaction. "Why are you still filming?" Terrible acting. Get the fuck out of my reddits.

How does a ~300 views video have ~2500 upvotes? Lag in view count on youtube?. Does view only count if entire video is watched? I made it to 55 seconds before shutting this retarded shit off.

[–]Darko15 2 points3 points ago

Lol u mad?

[–]DVS720 1 point2 points ago

So because you as a face of the company fucked up and you realize this is a terrible thing to happen to your job, it entitles you to take away someones right, take their phone, and ban them from ever returning to the building? Dont be a dick dude. Laugh it off, if the old hag and the rest of the pompous dicks cant find humor in a mistake, who the fuck cares. Shit happens its life.

[–]friedrice5005 13 points14 points ago

He never takes his phone and he only kicks him out of the party. Being that it was a private function that was entirely within his right.

[–]slyf 2 points3 points ago

His phone was clearly not taken as he was filming as he was leaving the building, additionally it was never ever shown, stated, or implied that he was banned from the building.

[–]mo0k 3 points4 points ago

did you not listen to the end of the video? they kicked him out and said he can't come back in

[–]James1991 10 points11 points ago

He can't come back in for that event, which is perfectly reasonable. it's a private event.

[–]762headache 4 points5 points ago

To the private party

[–]EricTboneJackson 2 points3 points ago

That woman made me crackup so hard.

[–]dagoon79 2 points3 points ago

[–]Raistlin719 -2 points-1 points ago

Those noises she made were ridiculous, definitely staged, come on

[–]Minotaur_in_house 11 points12 points ago

Would it help you to know she's a elderly Japanese woman? Think of the words with the accent.

[–]Raistlin719 6 points7 points ago

That makes more sense. They just sounded like such fake noises, but that would explain it

[–]McPoot -4 points-3 points ago

That poor woman is terrible at acting.

I hope their rigs can dispense oil in a more controlled manner then their beverage machines...

[–]pizooozooo -1 points0 points ago

[–]RustyShackleford12 -1 points0 points ago

lol wtf was she saying. She sounded like a baby talking. Also, she just stood there as it soaked her. What was the liquid?

[–]killrandydead 1 point2 points ago

that was awesome, like some one set it up do that, why else would some one be filming?...

[–]rygnar 1 point2 points ago

I love how the old lady freaks out like the model is spewing lava all over the place!

[–]bink_uk 1 point2 points ago

It's interesting how the atmosphere before the incident is already bristling with tension - the speaker and the old guy seem to hate each other right from the get go.

You think if you can build drill and complete an oil well, you would be competent enough to make a drink spout. I like to think this is how someone decided to quit the job.

Something seems a bit fishy about the whole thing. I call shenanigans.

The Shell corporation is doing all they can to clean up this disastrous spill. 6 helicopters and a fleet of clean up vessels have been sent to the old lady's location in an attempt to oh my goodness ohhmyyooohhhhmmyyy.

Real? Well it's funny, but so what.

Does anyone actually believe a video like this will convince people to stop driving cars or stop using petroleum-based products like computers, iPhones, iPads, combs, toothbrushes, flip-flops, ad infinitum . . .

They do that everyday in Africa. The Nigerian rebels attack Shell's pipe lines all the time. They even kidnapped Shell's worker and later release them to bring attention to their causes.

What sad is if Shell leave the Delta, the Chinese is going to gobble up that place and Africa for oil instead.

Why do security guys always hold their earpieces and look left at nothing and right at nothing, even if you're talking to them?
