We Are The Many

Ye come here, gather 'round the stage
The time has come for us to voice our rage
Against the ones who've trapped us in a cage
To steal from us the value of our wage

From underneath the vestiture of law
The lobbyists at Washington do gnaw
At liberty, the bureaucrats guffaw
And until they are purged, we won't withdraw

We'll occupy the streets
We'll occupy the courts
We'll occupy the offices of you
Till you do
The bidding of the many, not the few

Our nation was built upon the right
Of every person to improve their plight
But laws of this Republic they rewrite
And now a few own everything in sight

They own it free of liability
They own, but they are not like you and me
Their influence dictates legality
And until they are stopped we are not free

We'll occupy the streets
We'll occupy the courts
We'll occupy the offices of you
Till you do
The bidding of the many, not the few

You enforce your monopolies with guns
While sacrificing our daughters and sons
But certain things belong to everyone
Your thievery has left the people none

So take heed of our notice to redress
We have little to lose, we must confess
Your empty words do leave us unimpressed
A growing number join us in protest

We occupy the streets
We occupy the courts
We occupy the offices of you
Till you do
The bidding of the many, not the few

You can't divide us into sides
And from our gaze, you cannot hide
Denial serves to amplify
And our allegiance you can't buy

Our government is not for sale
The banks do not deserve a bail
We will not reward those who fail
We will not move till we prevail

We'll occupy the streets
We'll occupy the courts
We'll occupy the offices of you
Till you do
The bidding of the many, not the few

We'll occupy the streets
We'll occupy the courts
We'll occupy the offices of you
Till you do
The bidding of the many, not the few

We are the many
You are the few

  • This is the theme song of the Occupy Movement...beautiful in its simplicity, passionate, determined. I was particularly struck by his admission of fear to perform this song at the APEC dinner. Aren't we all taught to avoid confronting this unjust system? Yet, he showed real moral courage by refusing to give in to the fear! His song and his performance are an inspiration to all of the 99 percent as he puts the 1 percent on notice.

  • Why do I come here, look for the first time at the video, and see 31,616 views... and a comment 21 minutes ago saying there were 31,616 views already?? Nobody saw the video in 21 minutes? NOT EVEN ME???

  • what a voice! what talent and skill! what a fearless man, an example to the many ....and to the few...

  • actually this country was built on slavery and exploitation, some good hooks though, hope this is the new popular protest shit, better than this popular shit we been hearing for too long now

  • Ballsy move man... I salute your slack key delivery and your study of Mr. Dillion. Brillant. rock on!

  • Impressive!

  • @mrdubflex1 That is an interesing thought ... consider the recent British experience of RATM keeping the X-Factor off the #1 spot. The only problem is that the chart is related to sales, so I wonder whether the system might be laoded against a free download (cos that's the point isn't iot??) being eligible for a chart rating.

For sure though it will be the Xmas #1 in our hearts.

  • 31,616 views... awesome :)

  • It has become obvious as to who actually owns the police. Thanx Makana!

I have not seen this kind of united response since the Viet Nam war. It's refreshing to see that people still care. I'm often called an "Old Hippie Chick" by a lot of people. I've been wearing that moniker as a badge of high honor and with the priveledge of knowing that America's future is rising back up and it's all because of OWS, which is now larger, noisier, and much more effective than the TEA party. Again, Thanx!

  • This is AWESOME. This is the perfect Occupy anthem!

  • Yes, run for office and hire a lobbyist so we can lose to corporate interest. This is a people's uprising, and the point is to NOT play by their rules anymore, friend.

  • Our nation was built on many things, but it was not built upon a right of every person to improve their plight. A slave was 3/5 of a person, women had no power, political or otherwise, and our founding fathers believed only landowners should be allowed to vote because they were the only ones who had anything invested. I agree with occupy but please get your history right. Understand that you are fighting for rights as did woman and slaves. Occupy more than sidewalks. Run for office!

  • careful who you choose to sing the song for such a worthy cause.

  • let's see if we can occupy the music charts. Lets make this xmas No.1

  • this person lacks integrity imo and i do not respect makana due to his poor dealings with other artists~

  • This song says it all. Awesome. Simply awesome.

  • this would make bob dylan proud

  • There is NOTHING that compares to TRUTH! This song is awesome!

  • That must have been something! The truth within their pack of lies. Mahalo to Makana! You are a hero, keep singing the thruth.

  • Makana you are my hero. I wish more entertainers would stand up to do what you did.

  • And when the young become the leaders, will they be able to resist the thousands/millions of dollars thrown at them to simply not read a bill and pass it on for another puppet's stamp of approval? Will they refuse congressional pay, the pension, the healthcare and a promise for personal financially prosperity? Will we remain divided or come together to fight the corruption of government? I love this vid and song and highly regard the artist for his perceptiveness and talent. Divided we fall

  • Thank you for standing up for us all, Makana.

How easy it would have been for you to just play your designated sets as those pigs all wined and dined, but instead you showed yourself as a true man of principle and honour and forced them to squirm as they struggled to ignore you.

I hope you get the rewards you are due.

  • This nicely sums up the whole meaning of the Occupy Movement

  • Really would appreciate tab/chords and lyrics posted for the liberty songs, they're proliferating and getting played in coffeehouses. Make it easy for us... off to google "liberty playlist"

  • reminds me of Bob Dylan. I love Bob Dylan.
