Diesel Slams 'Misopolis Abortions For Successful Living' Spoof Advert

Pills

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 3/02/2012 15:49 Updated: 3/02/2012 17:16

Fashion giant Diesel has reacted with fury after a spoof advert in its name appeared online featuring images of robots dispensing abortion pills into the mouths of models.

The site hails the "Misopolis" collection, which purports to provide "Abortions for successful living" - a play on the real firm's well-known "successful living" campaign.

Literature on the spoof site says: "We, at Diesel, have a stupid dream.

"What if we gave our female factory workers the same rights as successful people? A factory where they decide over their own bodies. Where they can have happy accidents without consequences. A factory for only the brave."

It continues: "Abstinence is f**ked up" and even makes reference to back-street abortions carried out with coat hangers."

We spoke to Diesel HQ today and they said: "Diesel can categorically state that we have no involvement in this campaign and have already begun the process of a legal investigation - we will ensure all steps are taken to hold the person(s) accountable for this fake campaign activity."

Despite Diesel's denial, the blog community is already abuzz with surprise.

Dollymix wrote: "If it's genuine, its possibly the most ill-advised piece of advertising I've ever seen.

"We can see what's being attempted here: it's a sort of 'reaction piece' to the increasingly powerful pro-abstinence movement that's gaining ground in the States: a tongue-in-cheek rejection of it intended to resonate with liberal-leaning women.

"The ads are clearly designed to court controversy and 'go viral' and you might well argue that this article is itself just rising to the bait - but I honestly don't think that Diesel will get the type of notoriety they wanted from trivialising such a sensitive topic."

According to Twitter users, the campaign has apparently been traced back to Women On Waves, a site which promotes safe abortions.

Literature on the site reads: "Women on Waves is a non-profit organization concerned with women's human rights. Its mission is to prevent unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortions throughout the world."

It names the founder as Rebecca Gomperts, a doctor, artist and abortion rights activist who has won numerous women's rights awards.

Calls to the organisation were unanswered this afternoon.

has anyone else received a press release about Diesel Misopolis? It's pretty disturbing and I can't gauge whether it's genuine or not

It doesn't appall me and I'm not shaken up or disturbed. It's awkward for Diesel, sure, but it has at least provoked people to think about womens' rights to access to abortion and access to advice regarding whether that's the right choice for them. It be appalled and very upset if I was pregnant and had no options other than just "having it". Incidentally, does anyone know a good global charity that deals with contraception and relevant advice and counseling for women world wide?

To quote from the article (because I live in "The States"): "the increasingly powerful pro-abstinence movement that's gaining ground in the States"

An absolute LIE there. It is not "powerful", it is not "gaining ground", it has, in fact, proven to be nothing but idiotic religious drivel pushed upon people who have the right to NOT have it forced upon them in any manner by our Constitutional law that only allows religion, but bans it from government, schools, and no one who wants it. "Abstinence" has in fact been proven to cause more pregnancies than ever, because it removes options and demands "nature be done away with". This "spokesperson" must be a one-sided, brainless, religious zealot we are calling the "Ameriban" because they are no different than the Taliban itself! The recent Komen Krash proves that most Americans have been through years of "religious right" (who always seem to be wrong about EVERYTHING) and are now happily moving away from these dangerous nutters. We are never going to donate a penny to the Komen "corporation" now that we are all aware of the slimy depths of their corruption of women's health.

Another person across he pond who agrees that the abstinence movement proved to be a giant failure. Abstinence only has lead to a glut of ignorance about basic reproductive health and to your point more pregnancies (if the pills are bad and so are condoms...well then use neigher and keep your fingers crossed?). If you finished reading the article though this "spokesperson" is pro-education, pro access to needed means of birth control and safe abortion methods.

I was simply quoting and responding to that one part of a sentence as the complete and lie those few words are. The "religious" (who pretend at it but are looking to rule) use that little bit of aggrandizing a great deal to slip it into people's mind that, despite actual evidence, it's "growing and highly successful". You'd be shocked at how those four words either get repeated or turned into "Oh, I thought it was such a success that other countries were relying on it to turn things around!" It actually worked here in the States! Propaganda is a living, skull-boring thing....

Thanks for clarifying this, I'm the Olivia pinnock whose tweet is featured. Regardless of whether this is diesel or not though, the press release left me shaken up and was truly disturbing. I don't know what these activists are playing at, it's appalling behaviour that has convinced no one of its point.

It's pretty interesting to read the Women on Waves response, explaining their reasons for creating this campaign.

http://dieselforwomen.com/revealed/response.html

I actually think they nailed it, making a lot of people talk and become aware of a number of issues that usually get swept under the carpet or not talked about.
