Wall St. Protesters Releasing the “Occupy Wall Street Journal”

The satirical group the Yes Men, best known for impersonating financial leaders to “publicly humiliate them,” has now teamed up with the free-form Occupy Wall Street movement to publish a newspaper explaining their collective cause.

And, naturally, what else could it possibly be named? The Occupy Wall Street Journal. Yep.

Surprisingly, the four-pager isn’t a prank, unlike many of the other stunts this troupe has pulled. The Yes Men launched a fundraising page on Kickstarter, where they can crowd source capital to make the project happen — and so far they’ve generated more than $17,000. The page explains that the paper will be used to help dissect the true mission of Occupy Wall Street, a protest of the financial service industry, which has been criticized by some for lacking focus. Here’s how the Yes Men described its new newspaper:

We want to be the people’s media. Our first project is The Occupy Wall Street Journal, a four-page broadsheet newspaper with an ambitious print run of 50,000. It’s aimed at the general public. The idea is to explain what the protest is about and profile different people who have joined and why they joined. We will explain the issues involved and how the general assembly process operates at Liberty Plaza. It will also offer resources and ways to join. The emphasis will be on quality content, design, photography and artwork that uses incisive humor to make it a lively read.

Future projects include longer editions of the newspaper, bold stickers, edgy posters, colorful palm cards and inspiring flyers.

Of course, if you still have to explain what your protest is about nearly two weeks in, it may be time to refine your cause’s focus.

End tax loopholes that allow most millionaires and billionaires to pay a lower effective tax rate than the middle class.

End the influence of money on our politicians and laws.

Get rid of profit-seeking health insurers who are obviously motivated to MINIMIZE healthcare and MAXIMIZE fees to pay those exorbitant executive salaries.

Allow shareholders more power to set executive pay.

End the influence of money on the Pentagon.  No more wars for oil, ever.

Break up the massive media companies into smaller pieces.

BETTER ANTITRUST ENFORCEMENT on companies like Intel Corp who brazenly bribe other market participants (like Dell and technology retailers) to block out the competition.

Most importantly, STOP LETTING BANK AND OTHER CORPORATE INTERESTS SLIP THEIR TENTACLES INTO OUR GOVERNMENT!

Reverse the Supreme Court decision allowing corporations to donate unlimited amounts of money to political causes.

It's not the Yes Men's project! We just supported it by promoting a kickstarter campaign.
