  • Something previously posted multiple times, or common topics.
  • Your day, your girlfriend, being bored or drunk, your opinion on something, etc.

I really enjoyed your film Yes Men Fix the World, and especially that you allowed a version of it to be distributed via peer-to-peer networks. Thank you for all you do, you're an inspiration!

Questions:

  • What people and/or events inspired you to get started as the Yes Men?
  • What would you tell someone who wishes to follow in your footsteps? Any lessons to pass on?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 23 points24 points ago

In my case, for the inspiration part, i think got interested in some strange art / media projects back in the day. I picked up the RE/Search publication called "Pranks" in 1988 and realized that some amazing people were very serious about stuff that I never imagined you could be serious about, but was super interested in. That's a really fun book - check it out if you get a chance.

[–]CowzGoesMoo 0 points1 point ago

You do realize that a carbon tax won't stop people from polluting the air right? Your still letting people pollute the air except your just charging them more for it...Think of it as a new way to tax poor people from rich people like Al Gore.

[–]SquareSquid 0 points1 point ago

Can I just say you guys are part of what inspired me to be an activist, and I love your work. I really want to use my clown/theater, graphic and web skills towards doing things like you guys now that I have some more time. Keep kicking ass!

[–]eat-your-corn-syrup -1 points0 points ago

this reminds me of a joke Zizek said about Stalin. Comrade A speaks against Stalin in from of other comrades. Comrade B gets up and says "Comrade A, what the fuck. you are not supposed to talk like that to comrade Stalin! No one challenges Stalin around here." Next day comrade B is sent to a gulag.

[–]Clairenoel -2 points-1 points ago

Yes

[–]xadet 37 points38 points ago

Where can I buy my very own SurvivaBall?

[–]ichnicht 21 points22 points ago

Probably he is worried about the climate change?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 10 points11 points ago

We have published plans to make your own as well! Hmm... now let me figure out where they are...

[–]moxanot 11 points12 points ago

They are published in this Activity Book 'Keep It Slick': link

I couldn't find it up online easily, I'll keep looking through though. That book is great though, has some well written scholarly articles about what the yes men do, as well as fake press passes and other junk.

[–]moxanot 19 points20 points ago

[–]compulsorypost 0 points1 point ago

I have no idea how I survived without one of these, but I won't be going much longer without. I'm ordering a few for my friends and family as well, so we can merge to become the ultra-mega-survivalball!

[–]carpy22 25 points26 points ago

How can Troy, NY improve itself?

[–]eyeballjunk 20 points21 points ago

As a former Trojan, I would suggest that all Subways be converted into DeFazio's pizza places. Also, better bagels, and fix the fucking skiball machine at Footsy McGoos, which is incapable of keeping an accurate score.

eyeballjunk for Mayor, 2013.

[–]carpy22 8 points9 points ago

Footsy's is such a great place to hang out. DeFazio's stromboli give their pizza a run for the money.

[–]moxanotThe Yes Men 13 points14 points ago

I'd say if RPI students weren't warned not to go downtown it might help the night life and economy of downtown Troy, and establish a better social connection between common people so that it isn't as scary to be there because we help them instead of withholding our expansive resources. Paying property tax on RPI land would prolly help too.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 22 points23 points ago

How can it not? Just kidding. Lots of great stuff going on there--- like any town in America, encourage the growth of local stuff that works and feeds the local economy, discourage the big corporate vampires that only want our blood.

[–]carpy22 10 points11 points ago

Thanks for your response Igor! Join us at /r/RPI when you can.

[–]Barmleggy 5 points6 points ago

Support Ali Baba!

[–]TaserWieldingBear 22 points23 points ago

How are you guys coping with your rising fame? That is, I'd imagine that networks and such are getting wise to your press releases and tricks and are much more wary about having you on. So how are you finding new ways to get the media to pay attention?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 15 points16 points ago

Also, we're not really that famous! Very rare to get recognized on the street. Also, we are working with lots of other people, so many new faces are taking the spotlight. That helps – if you think you are one of those people who can stand in front of an audience and convincingly represent, say, Exxon, then get in touch!

[–]jimbol 0 points1 point ago

I think I know one of those other people. Did you ever work with Patrick Lichte? Also, I love you work!!

[–]actorsspace 55 points56 points ago

Have you ever gone to an event under your aliases and been discovered or pointed out before you could get up to the podium or do whatever you came to do?

[–]AkinaYamito 18 points19 points ago

As someone who's home town is Fort McMurray I feel like I get cheated whenever someone just says "Alberta's oil sand" or "Northern Alberta." Anyway I would love to see you guys up here at a Syncrude or Suncor event.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 18 points19 points ago

YES! do you have any ideas on how to participate? You can always contact us directly to discuss. Too bad we didn't know you before we went there a few months ago. Very, very surreal place!

[–]espaceman 7 points8 points ago

As someone who works for Suncor (it helpdesk), not even the people who work in the oil sands camps make the difference sometime. I assume they are outside people.

[–]Got_Engineers 0 points1 point ago

Why do you say you feel cheated?

[–]carryXon 0 points1 point ago

I reside in Calgary, Alberta and reading this article brought a big smile to my face.

[–]MooseV2 -3 points-2 points ago

Well that not a yes!

[–]GoddamnGoats 16 points17 points ago

Thanks for taking time out of your day to stop by Reddit.

What would you think if Reddit coordinated with one of your pranks/activism?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 16 points17 points ago

YES! That would be awesome. Wow. Have not even considered that - but it seems like our current plans (the Action Switchboard i've been banging on about) would be a perfect fit... hmmm... now let us know what you have in mind! So excited-

[–]moxanot 13 points14 points ago

Wow that would amazing, if the action switchboard could plug into forums and different established online communities. However, I think one of the reddit rules is that you can't request to use reddit as a personal army. Kind of the same unspoken rule at 4chan.

[–]GoddamnGoats 1 point2 points ago

Good point. We'll see what the moderators think/what Reddit comes up with.

[–]WakakaBiers -2 points-1 points ago

Here is a modest proposal. Stop the AMA. Reddit had Jailbait reddit for 3 years. Look up CNNs videos on jailbait and creeperpics.

[–]MC_Cuff_Lnx 1 point2 points ago

I do not really understand why I am supposed to give a fuck.

[–]FlutedPaleoPoint -1 points0 points ago

This idea cannot be upvoted enough. Finally make the hive mind control the hive body.

[–]pandaman306 12 points13 points ago

I loved The Yes Men Fix The World and I have to ask, when did you decide to go for satire as a strategy for fixing the world/trying to change things?

Did you start of as comedians and decide to put your skills to a good cause or start as outraged citizens and found comedy to be a good medium?

[–]loudmouse312 6 points7 points ago

I just wanted to say, 'thanks'. I loved playing SimCopter as a kid. Many hours spent with that one. Thanks!

[–]loudmouse312 2 points3 points ago

Oh yeah. I loved it. I was pretty young, but I thought it was the coolest thing.

[–]MyRealNameIsTwitch 0 points1 point ago

I received it in a package of other sim games as a gift from my Uncle. Sadly my father didn't like me playing video games (did it anyways :D). Sim copter was quite the experience to be sure :D

[–]AshuraSpeakman 1 point2 points ago

That is just the sort of ingenuity that they should have embraced. I am glad to see you are undeterred and are going to make your mark on history, one way or another.

[–]AshuraSpeakman 0 points1 point ago

Alas, you're welcome!

[–]MOONGOONER 0 points1 point ago

SimCopter might be my favorite Maxis game, probably because it was dripping with who-knows-what-will-happen humor. I doubt you're responsible for all of that but that easter egg was right in line with the rest of it I think.

[–]terra7incognita -1 points0 points ago

OMG HE SAID NO!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]PeanutNore 1 point2 points ago

I really enjoyed SimCopter as a kid. Importing my SC2000 cities and flying around them was a blast.

[–]Thistlemanizzle 11 points12 points ago

What change have you effected through your actions? I hear of your pranks from time to time, but I never hear of any positive outcome (aside from drawing attention to issues that are already somewhat public).

[–]fotorobot 1 point2 points ago

I just donated some money to the kickstarter. Can I redeem that virtual hug now?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

awww * e-hug *

[–]BrooklynHipster 9 points10 points ago

What's your long term vision for The Yes Lab?

It it more of a networking tool for activists? Or is it like a decentralized open source university? Or maybe both?

[–]cyburai 4 points5 points ago

In regards to funding, get a kickstarter (or one of the other fundraising platforms) going. I'd give in a minute.

Edit: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1194236337/the-yes-men-are-revolting found this.

[–]Regular_Hipster 9 points10 points ago

Which scam, farce, prank, mission or whatever you call them would you describe as most successful?

which was the most fun?

[–]FactorGroup 5 points6 points ago

Follow up: Which was the least fun or gave you the most trouble? Are there any that you regret doing/trying to do?

[–]MrSyster 0 points1 point ago

Did the FBI disband the IWP in part because of your involvement?

[–]MrSyster 1 point2 points ago

Awesome

[–]MC_Cuff_Lnx 0 points1 point ago

What were the International Web Police? I've never heard of them.

Heh, I guess that's thanks to your help!

[–]Mr-Crasp 8 points9 points ago

Do you have any more upcoming documentaries?

[–]moxanot 8 points9 points ago

Yes! We're running a kickstarter for it at the moment: The Yes Men Are Revolting.

[–]NotJimCarrey 8 points9 points ago

I was surprisingly disappointed by seeing answers other than 'yes'

[–]YonuKitteh -5 points-4 points ago

Will you stop the AMA on account of the Jailbait reddit being up for 3 years?

[–]samvimesmusic 14 points15 points ago

How can we know this AMA is not a prank?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 10 points11 points ago

It might be a prank on us. Do you exist? I know that i do!

[–]AshuraSpeakman 1 point2 points ago

He's got you there - whoever you are!

[–]AActivist 7 points8 points ago

I submitted a project idea to your website and it interested you enough that Andy talked to me about it a little bit. I haven't been able to get over my fear, as I am known and recognizable in this town as an activist. Is the safest thing to hire a lawyer up front to vet the action for what laws I might be breaking and learn how to prepare for that?

[–]MarmotChaos 7 points8 points ago

Andy - I'm a lawyer, and I would love to have my advice ignored by the Yes Men pro bono.

[–]MarmotChaos 3 points4 points ago

Graduating law school < Getting federal clerkship < Hearing "You're hired" from the Yes Men. Career apex reached; downhill starts now.

[–]DJUrsus 0 points1 point ago

Would it be too deconstructivist to interpret yeslab.org as "Ye Slab dot Org?" (Yes, it would.)

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 13 points14 points ago

In our experience, most lawyers come in two varieties: those who tell you not to do things, and those who tell you to do things and then say "I'm not your lawyer!" There are those rare ones (like the EFF who rep us!) who spend a good deal of time trying to figure it out, but what you have to realize is that often, for the kind of thing we do LAWYERS DON'T KNOW whether its legal or not. So that means its a huge amount of work for them to make a good guess at it - tons of research. BUT. We have come to realize that it's best to do things. After all, we've only been sued once. The benefits far outweigh the risks. But do talk to use more about your idea! We've had trouble dealing with capacity on the current system of ad-hoc acvice giving that we do, but when we get our new Action Switchboard up and running, the idea is that all that will change and we can even help hook you up with folks who don't really care too much about risk – real or imagined!

[–]gunzord 7 points8 points ago

  • Have you ever got any requests by advertising agencies, to do a guerilla ad stunt for a corporation?
  • if you declined, have you ever felt ripped off by an ad agency that just stole one of your concepts?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 9 points10 points ago

We have gotten requests. But we've either turned them down or we proposed something that made them turn us down, because it was critical in some way. We have seen some of our ideas ripped off, but we didn't really feel ripped off because we sort of expected it might happen. Actually, we expect that might happen more since we recently have been the subject of some strange corporate spying and whatnot.

[–]AshuraSpeakman 2 points3 points ago

What sort of strange corporate spying, Mike?

[–]gunzord 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the answer!

As an ad guy myself, it would be really interesting to see what theyve asked you for - and what youve proposed then.

[–]BrooklynHipster 12 points13 points ago

Hi guys! I’m such a huge fan it’s difficult to summarize, so i’ll leave it at this: you have inspired me more than any other living artists / activists.

So here’s my question: Who are some artists / activists that inspire YOU?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 10 points11 points ago

Hey- also if you are in Brooklyn, come do some stuff with us some time! We are in NYC most of the time these days...

[–]theyukes 13 points14 points ago

Have you ever been sued for any of your actions?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 33 points34 points ago

We've been sued by the US Chamber of Commerce! You can see a video of the action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flsNwClU1dI

But the US Chamber are the only ones who have sued us! Probably because everyone else we've targeted has some kind of brand that they need to protect, and if they sue us we can use the attention to put them on trial in the court of public opinion. In the case of the US Chamber, since they are a big nasty lobbying organization, they only need to please the top .01 percent of the population - which i think they probably do, just a little bit, by suing us. Right now the lawsuit is sitting on a judges desk in DC, waiting for him to rule whether it goes to trial or not. If it does, we welcome a chance to talk to the public about everything that is wrong with the US Chamber of Commerce.

[–]theyukes 5 points6 points ago

brilliant. glad that you're not intimidated one bit

[–]WhyShy 4 points5 points ago

I hope y'all get a chance to very publicly(pubicly?) take down uscoc.

[–]AshuraSpeakman 0 points1 point ago

The court of public opinion is one where a greater justice can be served, because evidence can be admitted so easily, even after a ruling has been handed down.

[–]OmnipotentEntity 7 points8 points ago

Oh god, I'm reading the briefs now, and they're hilarious. I'm so glad you linked them.

However, contrary to the Chamber's limited view, parody exists and is protected by the First Amendment even when the butt of the joke doesn't get, or appreciate, the humor.

[T]he Chamber fails to allege that the Yes Men engaged in any cognizable unfair trade practice under the Act.

The Chamber's "kitchen sink" approach to pleading a complaint set forth this eighth count with little foundation... This makeweight claim should be dismissed.

Rather, the Chamber brought and continues to pursue this action for one reason only -- to harass and punish Defendants because of their biting parody that exposed the Chamber to embarrassment over it's actual political positions.

lolz

[–]ckypop 0 points1 point ago

So after reading some info on your behalf about printing business cards yourself with the help of a copy shop and watching the hoax on the US Chamber of Commerce, I have but one question to ask: why did you not have a business card?

[–]pzer0 1 point2 points ago

Just briefs? The lack of boxers in the US judicial system would explain a lot, actually. You try being chipper when your nutsack is being choked by cotton!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 2 points3 points ago

Wow, you just used three of my favorite words in one sentence! Thanks for that...

[–]leavinit 0 points1 point ago

chipper judicial cotton?

[–]scuby22 6 points7 points ago

Have you ever been physically threatened/attacked for any of your events?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 7 points8 points ago

We've been physically removed from an Oil industry conference by the conference organizer himself (he had a hard time convincing security that they should take away the keynote speaker.) The funny part was that the police came and ordered him to release us! They thought it was very funny, they actually were trying hard to put on "serious faces" every time they talked to the conference guy. You can see us being removed from that conference in our second film, "The Yes Men Fix the World."

[–]ShoutingAtTheTV 6 points7 points ago

Those of us without the skillz of Anon, nor the courage to get arrested -- what can we do to help?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 9 points10 points ago

If you go to http://tmwrk.com/edit-profile you can sign up and we will be able to communicate with you about this. At the moment we're just getting geared up to make this a more active system, but the idea is that we will be connecting people with ideas with people with resources and people who want to carry them out. Anything you do, at any skill level, may be useful! What is needed most is enthusiasm-

[–]moxanot 6 points7 points ago

Right now we're running a kickstarter campaign! The object is to release a film which will be the launchpad for our activist switchboard, to organize more people to carry out yes men-style actions.

http://yeslab.org/get-involved

film// The Yes Men + film// The Yes Men Fix the World

Failing that, showing the films to people you know would be interested is really useful. Surprisingly many people still haven't heard of the yes men, and the films fun enough for anyone. I recently showed it to my grandma and aunt, and at least my aunt found it amazing. She's also a teacher in Portland Oregon. Show it to your professors, teachers, anyone! See what they think.

[–]Ighnaz 6 points7 points ago

so what's next for you guys?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 4 points5 points ago

right now we're working hard on our next movie and on our action switchboard... that is kind of a full plate, in addition to the day jobs!

[–]Omnishambles_1 6 points7 points ago

Are you ever open to ideas from people? (i.e myself) Also i love your work, have been following for some time now!

[–]Omnishambles_1 3 points4 points ago

In effect you'll just have people like myself 'winking' ideas. Omnishambles_1 sent you a virtual gift. 1 Democracy token. Collect as many as you can to control this group. Welp I've ruined this....

[–]HORRIBLY_BAD_ANALOGY 4 points5 points ago

I'm curious why it needs to be human staffed?

For example, I am currently building a website that allows people to post and view activities currently happening in their area (or the area they select). It could easily be adapted to be specific to "direct actions."

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 3 points4 points ago

YES! please do contribute ideas! Right now we have this page - http://www.yeslab.org/get-involved that has a couple ways to get involved. Soon, we will be beefing that up with our Action Switchboard, if we raise the money on our Kickstarter campaign.

[–]Stanger03 6 points7 points ago

Wow, an AMA I actually care about!

I actually convinced my government teacher to play one of your movies in class a few years back after finding out about them. I really like you guys' movies and what you do.

I was wondering how often you guys get recognized in public for who you are? Thanks so much!

[–]Stanger03 0 points1 point ago

Can't wait to get my secret decoder ring! Love you guys and I can't wait for the next movie!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men -1 points0 points ago

Wow, thanks for that! Every so often someone comes up to us on the street - mostly if we are together. But overall, we're not exactly celebrities!

[–]Stanger03 1 point2 points ago

Can't wait to get my secret decoder ring! Love you guys and I can't wait for the next movie!

[–]NoUrge2BingeAndPurge 5 points6 points ago

Hey guys!

I love your approach and I really hope more and more people will start appreciating it!

What's your next action? Could you give us a hint? I'd like to see a charity event for Mitt Romney. We could donate 47% of all profits to his next campaign.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 6 points7 points ago

Thanks! If you love our approach, please do help spread the word. (Actually, we also need other kinds of support to grow- if you know folks who can donate to our kickstarter campaign - www.yesmenkickstarter.com that would help a huge amount!) For our next action: can't tell! Sorry, top secret for the moment. We are working pretty hard on the subject of climate change... but there are a bunch of other things in the works too!

[–]NoUrge2BingeAndPurge 1 point2 points ago

On a more constructive side, I'd like your opinion on an action I organized with a couple of my friends in Mostar.

After a few hundred football (soccer or whatever you wanna call it) hooligans decided to kick the sh!t out of each other in the center of the city, we replied with an event called Chocolution where the idea was for people to meet up and share chocolate (instead of punches) with perfect strangers.

The thing went viral in our country and we had some international support from our friends (as you can see on the blog). About 500 people showed up at the same place the hooligans clashed just 3 days after the event was scheduled. There was chocolate all over the place!!

We are currently planning the next year's event and I was wondering if you think participating in the Yes Lab could help us out?

Cheers!

[–]NoUrge2BingeAndPurge 1 point2 points ago

Thanks! I'll most definitely add it to Actipedia.

[–]thiev 5 points6 points ago

Can you give us a clue as to what/when your next project might be? Like what time we should turn on Fox Business or something? I'd love to watch it live.

[–]NoUrge2BingeAndPurge 3 points4 points ago

It would be great to schedule it ahead on a service like this

[–]moxanot 4 points5 points ago

That would be a smokin' idea. I was just thinking that maybe it would alert the fact checkers and interns that are searching the internet for anything posted about them and might give them away. But if it could be done un-searchably, I'd advocate that too. Totally wish I'd been able to see some of their interviews and press releases in real time. ( I just started with them. )

[–]YonuKitteh 0 points1 point ago

Here is some activism for you. Stop the AMA. Reddit had Jailbait reddit for 3 years. Look up cnns videos on jailbait and creeperpics.

[–]Itsaboutothappen 5 points6 points ago

Isn't 11am-2pm 3 hours?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 5 points6 points ago

You are so technical about the time! But, um, yes... i suppose so. Harumph.

[–]Hugsandloveforever 4 points5 points ago

You guys came to NYU to give a presentation and you're awesome, and I just wanted to say thank you!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Thank you!

[–]cyburai 4 points5 points ago

How did you settle on "the Yes Men" as the name of your group? It's brilliant.

[–]cyburai 0 points1 point ago

And somehow perfect for your guys. For me, it shows hacktivism and social engineering used in a good way.

[–]cyburai 1 point2 points ago

Bit of Sun Tsu there, eh? Learn your enemy to defeat your enemy.

[–]laserpilot 4 points5 points ago

I actually shot a few clips of you guys for Fix the World (they didn't end up getting used unfortunately but I might have made it in the credits?).

I'm not actually a huge fan of what you do, but I think it probably stems from a misunderstanding. There is definitely an annoyance factor there for sure and I think there is a disconnect for me to see the "point" of this kind of annoyance activism...it sort of gets peoples attention, but does it end up effecting change in the long run as far as you can tell? I think its a combination of that and occasionally your arguments can feel a little heavy handed or one sided

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 8 points9 points ago

Howdy! Thanks for shooting us – we did go through a ton of tape for the last film, most on the cutting room floor. As for the "annoyance" activism part, there is some really good evidence that what we do does make a difference, when it is combined with an ongoing campaign and public pressure. With the US Chamber of Commerce, we impersonated them and got several days worth of international coverage that embarrassed them; within two weeks they changed their position on Climate Change legislation. We didn't cause them to do that: we participated in a huge movement that already had them backed up against a wall, and our action was a small push that probably helped. Check out the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flsNwClU1dI to see Al Gore mention us at the end. Other evidence: we get email from folks every day who say it made a difference to them... As for being heavy handed or one-sided. We make no bones about that. We like our hands to be as heavy as possible for hitting bad corporations. One sided? Should we give any attention to the other side, if the other side is dangerously insane and out to get us? That is where we are today. It this was WW2 you would not see too many people among the allies complaining about not taking a balanced approach to Hitler. We are reaching a point where the idea of balance becomes a tool to be used against doing what is right. We ARE interested in doing what is right - that we can get behind!

[–]laserpilot 0 points1 point ago

Great and fair answer, thanks!

Again, I think it stems from my own misunderstanding about this type of activism. I certainly appreciate you guys getting out there and effecting change like this..something I don't see myself doing in the same way. I'm sure you get these kinds of comments all the time though...just a point about clarity of message I suppose.

It's also been a couple years since I've seen Fix the World so I forget exactly what my specific issues with it were....just something that didn't sit quite right with me I think. But making art myself I feel I'm in a similar boat but I'm not doing a good job of relating the difficulty. I have no idea how a piece I make affects humanity at all, but I still do it and see value in it, and I think you're doing the same thing...just being hopeful that it will have a good outcome in the end but not letting yourselves get discouraged about a lack of direct 'progress'

Hope you're doing well!

[–]TheMellowestyellow 3 points4 points ago

Do you like guacamole?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 4 points5 points ago

Yes... very much. Lots of lime and cilantro please...

[–]samvimesmusic 1 point2 points ago

Do you believe there will be a revolution in the developed countries at some point or will change happen step by step?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 5 points6 points ago

Well- we hope that there are a bunch of really rapid step-by-step changes that re-instate democracy and force some sane decisions... otherwise there will be a revolution. We want a non-violent one, but if we wait too long to institute changes, a violent one will happen. The resource wars are not pretty.

[–]nblinder 3 points4 points ago

Have you guys ever pulled off a prank which resulted in the opposite reaction you were expecting/hoping for? Like, have you guys ever thought of something so preposterous that you expected to be forcibly removed from an event but instead found everyone completely embracing your fake message?

[–]BACULUMFOREVERYONE 3 points4 points ago

What was the worst legal repercussion that you faced as a result of impersonating a company/individual?

[–]BACULUMFOREVERYONE 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the article! In my question I was however more inclined to learn what consequences you have suffered legally due to your actions, and if you could elaborate. Thanks!

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 1 point2 points ago

Consequences, none. We've been sued by the US Chamber of Commerce, but that's a good thing. See other posts for why....

[–]NebulonicAlchemy 3 points4 points ago

Would you be able to infiltrate the corporate scientific community and expose how much damage they are doing? Thanks in advance.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Great Idea! Can you do it too? Help our or do it?

[–]reallifesaulgoodman 3 points4 points ago

Do journalists still fall for your phony press releases? I figure they would wise up by now.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men -1 points0 points ago

Some always seem to - but we don't really want that to happen! Ideally only enough fall for it to get the story going. Collateral Damage.

[–]Effex 2 points3 points ago

Firstly, I think what you guys are doing is awesome. I haven't gotten around to watching the second movie, but I certainly will.

As for my question - Are there any crazy, behind the scenes stories that you can share?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 5 points6 points ago

wow- tons of them. Probably the strangest one was the International Web Police event that we did about a decade ago --- Andy mentioned it in another post. We got so paranoid after they chased us and told us they were calling the secret service that we went on the run. For five minutes. Then we got a grip, and decided to "hide out" in Disneyworld (the conference was in Orlando, and we figured the Secret Service would not find us there.) Strange day in Disneyworld- but suffice it to say that the Secret Service did not find us to be a threat. Never heard from them!

[–]kevie3drinks 1 point2 points ago

am I the only one that thought every answer would be yes?

[–]RealityIsMyReligion 2 points3 points ago

You guys have definitely become recognizable. There is no way you can pull these stunts off without getting caught anymore.

Will you be using volunteers to help do your bidding, or are you going for a new approach with your new-found fame?

And if you are using volunteers, how do I sign up?

[–]cyburai 2 points3 points ago

I actually witnessed the BBC interview in real time. And I totally bought it. So did many of their investors. Well done. And the newspaper gag was Brilliant!

Was there any backlash or fallout for you guys personally for doing these? How bad did it get?

[–]cyburai 0 points1 point ago

No, but at the time I worked for an investment bank, and had several non-US news feeds. When the interview was going on, I was thinking "seriously? They are voluntarily taking responsibility? That's awesome!! What's the catch?"

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 1 point2 points ago

Wow, funny! You were at an investment bank! Yikes! Which one?

I guess a lot of HUMANS, even working for investment banks, liked it a lot, but the market as a whole really didn't - took billions of Dow's stock value as soon as the announcement was made. It's described in our film The Yes Men Fix the World.

[–]cyburai 0 points1 point ago

Not a huge one, but 10-15 billion under investment. (I'd rather keep the details to myself, since I still do work in the financial industry.)

When it came out, at least one trader moved money from Dow. Several others watched for confirmation on any other news feed. Once the BBC retracted your interview, there were a couple of buy orders for Dow. Since you depressed the stock via the interview, the vultures came in and made a quick 3-5% profit while the stock recovered.

I'm looking to see if I can find a Frankfurt exchange volume for Dow on Dec 3, 2004. It was significant, I suspect due to some fund traders freaking out. Dow is a cornerstone stock for most medium risk funds.

[–]cyburai 0 points1 point ago

sent.

[–]DaAvalon 2 points3 points ago

I'm confused... I thought for a second you meant like that weird cult thing in Jim Carrey's Yes Man.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Now i'm also confused!

[–]kayriss 2 points3 points ago

Has there ever been an idea for a project that you invested time and energy into, then thought better of? Something that was too "out there" or dangerous for you to take on?

[–]SpaceBasedMasonry 3 points4 points ago

Any thoughts on that independent bond trader, Alessio Rastani, who last year said Goldman Sachs would love a recession? The media seemed to settle on the fact that he was one of you guys (which a few minutes of research could flatly refute).

Seems interesting that they'd use you guys as a scapegoat for a uncomfortable comment by an interview subject.

P.S. Culture jamming is pretty awesome. Keep up the good work

[–]BloatedChocoStarfish 1 point2 points ago

Just wanted to say that your Dow Chemical/Bhopal 'stunt' was masterful. Were there any repercussions to your group for pulling that off?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 2 points3 points ago

Only good repercussions. We did find out that Dow Chemical hired a private firm to spy on us – Stratfor. Check out the story here: http://theyesmen.org/stratfor

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

Dow didn't sue them or really do anything about it other than start a greenwashing campaign. greenwashing ad

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

None! No bad ones anyway...

[–]unampho 3 points4 points ago

You've said you're antiglobalization. Is it really globalization that bothers you? To me that's like fearing guns, but not murderers. Would antineoliberalism be closer? Or does the "not in my backyard" mentality + globalization count as its own evil?

Edit: Now I understand that schoolgirl giggle feeling people say they have when an ama'er answers their question.

[–]unampho 0 points1 point ago

Also, what role do you think "wall street" has to play with various evils in the world? (I tend to think of the relevant parts of each as a single unit.)

A lot of my friends are going to go off to be traders and to them it's like they're going to be playing awesome high-stress fps video games, but where the points are real dollars. It's unsettling to me.

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 1 point2 points ago

Yes, that's super unsettling. Piloting drones that kill people in Pakistan must also be really fun, like playing a video game where the points are dead people. Ugh.

[–]Laahrik 0 points1 point ago

Drone pilots decidedly do not have fun. Playing with other people's money for kicks is not remotely (heheh) the same thing as taking human life, and it takes its toll on the operators in a very similar way to warfighters in theater. It's a negative side-effect people seem to not be aware of, rightly being overshadowed by the death on the other end of the missile strike.

[–]A_Tasty_Ham_Sandwich 2 points3 points ago

I just watched your movie several days ago, and was thinking how an AMA would be interesting.

Have you had any event where you would say you caused more problems than good? For example, in Bhopal and Louisiana, you gave people false hope that their concerns were going to be alleviated to some degree. The people, at least those you interviewed, said that they supported what you did as it brought attention to the situation. Has there been an event when it didn't get much publicity and just gave people some false, temporary hope?

(not trying to be combative, just curious)

[–]life036 2 points3 points ago

How do you feel about the way the occupy movement has declined (whether it be from media bias or actual internal disorganization)?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

We are firm believers that we are in a long struggle where there will be ups and downs. Its a bit of a down now with Occupy mutating into less visible forms, but it will rise again.

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

sucks. don't forget it was broken up by many cities as well. but many are still active. if they were going door to door and talking to people about what they might do to help, get them involved in projects, it could be stronger to have a grassroots build of the movement versus a media-build. I think the disorganization is their strength, because that is a lot more moral a way to represent themselves and carry things out. They are a foil to a system of too much organization which lets people fall through the cracks and tries to be in control over everyone, which is really like organizing no one but making everyone buy from you.

[–]snapplecracks 0 points1 point ago

I watched some of "The Yes Men" in an epistemology class in Plattsburgh. It was pretty funny handing out hamburgers and saying they were made from shit.

[–]Hejke 0 points1 point ago

I don't really have a question, I just want to say thank you. You're a great inspiration to me and my friends. We're trying to get the Swedish goverment to stop sending people back to wartorn countries and are about to use your general approach in our next campaign.

Thank you.

[–]DelayLay 0 points1 point ago

Can you come visit my school in nyc?

[–]ThatFunnyKid 0 points1 point ago

Will you upvote my comment? and just watched the film love it

[–]FactorGroup 7 points8 points ago

Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 22 points23 points ago

When it comes to horses and ducks, we're lovers, not fighters. We'd like to love all 101 of them.

[–]Slartibartfastibast 9 points10 points ago

Note: mikebonanno is Mike Bonanno, the other Yes Man.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 9 points10 points ago

Thanks much! I forgot to identify myself. Doh!

[–]pblokhout 1 point2 points ago

I think you two should talk. It's never good when you are "the other" in a relationship.

[–]ern_st 3 points4 points ago

I just have one question:

When can I buy the golden dick suit?!

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

It was custom made. If you can give pictures and video of it to some needy designer or textile savant, it would likely be cheaper than buying it from us.

[–]ern_st 1 point2 points ago

Now I'll just go out on a limp & ask what everyone is thinking: is his/your Golden Dong really that big?

But srsly great work you guys are doing, the whole human candles thing was nerve wrecking to watch. I just hope some of them understood the message. Many of your "victims" seem so blinded by their own beliefs… :/

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

Of horse it is.

Well they are codified in their positions. They benefit, so they must convince themselves it doesn't matter or that someone else would do it if they didn't. It's hard to let go of something that "works" no matter how much evidence and people you eventually hurt. People have been striking the axe blows for progress and convincing themselves that their pastoral hunting hobby is a justification that they DO like the environment.

Hypocrisy is one human trait that all of us possess. For me to see how people handle their hypocrisies is the most telling of their character.

[–]namesopitional -1 points0 points ago

Where can we buy our SuriverBalls?

[–]swales8191 0 points1 point ago

Two part question. What do you think is your most successful hoax, and without giving too much away, what are your plans for the future?

[–]mreluzco 1 point2 points ago

I think you guys are really inspiring, especially in an age with so little focus on protest. I've always wanted to do something like you guys, but I've never had the gumption to do it, and I've never been able to collaborate well enough to do it. So my question is twofold.

How do you find so many people to help you? Where do you get the balls to do what you do?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Mostly we use our friend network - but now we are working on growing things so that we can meet and work with complete strangers! And those strangers can meet and work with each other. If you want to join us, try going to http://tmwrk.com/edit-profile and sign up!

[–]Limahotel -1 points0 points ago

How can we be sure that anything you say on this AMA is true?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

You can decide to believe us or not - but we've got nothing to hide! If we were infiltrating a major corporate event, you can bet that things would be different.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

You only have our word. WORD!

[–]StumbleBees 1 point2 points ago

Would it be possible for you guys to provide the PowerPoint demonstration that you used in the Yes Men movie?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

YES! most of them are already on our websites, www.theyesmen.org and www.yeslab.org

[–]StumbleBees 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. I looked for them about a year ago and couldn't find them. Time to look again.

[–]tswpoker1 1 point2 points ago

Have you all ever met the No Men?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 3 points4 points ago

Not yet!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

NO!

[–]One_Percenter 0 points1 point ago

They're probably still reeling from the recent election.

[–]qwf 1 point2 points ago

Did you ever try to pursue collaborations with other social change organizations? What was the reception from the more established well known organizations?

[–]galacticpornstar 2 points3 points ago

I filmed a showing and talk that you gave in Boston. I told you that you reminded me of Steve Carell.

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 2 points3 points ago

Oh wow! I assume that was me, since he does weirdly look like me.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the help!

[–]Bercir 1 point2 points ago

What is your process for creating a piece? What is the timeline for crafting an intervention?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Usually an organization with a problem gets in touch, and we brainstorm with them. Shortest timeline: 4 days, for a thing we did with Americans for Safe Access (Medical Marijuana) in San Diego. Longest: maybe a year or so (it takes a long time to build Survivaballs and Golden Phallus suits.

[–]spage6 1 point2 points ago

Thank you guys for what you do!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

THANKS!

[–]bonny_peg_o_ramsey 1 point2 points ago

Were you guys ever based in Milwaukee? I recall this mysterious storefront that had "The Yes Men" on a sign but they were obviously not a business. I thought something sinister was going on in there...

[–]jeepershcrackers 1 point2 points ago

Any ideas as to what we can do to break the two party system?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Anyone out there have some ideas? There help redditors!

[–]Nebraska_Actually 0 points1 point ago

How often do you face the threat of a lawsuit?

Also keep up the great work!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

[–]Makaveli777 0 points1 point ago

I can't think of a question right now but I saw your movie a couple weeks ago on youtube and I really enjoyed it! I hope your lawsuit is going well!!

[–]Makaveli777 0 points1 point ago

Oh and you guys should mess with the Federal Reserve, they are some of the biggest crooks.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Thanks much! Its going too slowly! Come on, get us in court already!

[–]evanstueve 0 points1 point ago

What would it take to become a Yes Man? I would do anything.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

If you can start carrying out your own actions, you would already be one. And if you're consistent with it, it's likely you'll end up collaborating with us on something. We're trying to make anyone who wants to be a Yes Man able to organize and carry out activist actions. The best thing you can do now is donate to our kickstarter to fund the creation of this activist network! Can't wait to work with you! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1194236337/the-yes-men-are-revolting

[–]Dataeater 0 points1 point ago

So what happened to your trespassing charges in Calgary?

And how deep does your thinking go regarding the names of the people that Yes Men create? Do you have any sly allusion your "stage" names that they are trying to refer to or are they just nice sounding syllables.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Dismissed : ( - We tried to get them to put us in court but failed.

[–]PhantomPhun -1 points0 points ago

Who? I read the Wikipedia entry and I know less about them than before I read it. Holy shit.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit is right! Watch one of our movies, it will be much clearer. http://vodo.net/theyesmen

[–]bluedistraction 1 point2 points ago

What drives you do to this? I think what you do is amazing, and I just wonder what kind of motivation you need to follow through.

[–]YonuKitteh 0 points1 point ago

Here is some activism for you. Stop the AMA. Reddit had Jailbait reddit for 3 years. Look up cnns videos on jailbait and creeperpics.

[–]saltychica 0 points1 point ago

loved your film. AND i work right next door to West Hall!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men -1 points0 points ago

THANKS! in Lally?

[–]saltychica 0 points1 point ago

yes, sir. Lally School, Pittsburgh Bldg to be exact. Last year i watched Yes Men & really enjoyed it, & then i hear the RPI connection, & find out WHAT BLDG ... blew my mind. you know, except that (to my knowledge) your offices are no longer there. if you are in West Hall, let me know where! I will bring candy :)

[–]ShamAbram 0 points1 point ago

What is your opinion of Orange Alternative?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

GREAT!

[–]ShamAbram 0 points1 point ago

Is surrealist protest resurgent in today's crazy meme filled generation?

[–]jonysaid 1 point2 points ago

Hey Mike Bonanno, I was in your digital filmmaking class at RPI. After taking your class I started taking one film class per semester and I'm currently registered for a fourth. I loved your class and I loved your videos and thank you so much for doing an AMA. Andy, I'm sure you're great too!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Wow - thanks much!

[–]FormApplication 0 points1 point ago

Chrome or Firefox?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Firefox. We love Mozilla, they are giving us some informal advice on our new Action Switchboard project...

[–]v4zzy 1 point2 points ago

If they say I.E their reception here will not be very friendly...

[–]Dizigen 1 point2 points ago

There's a 1 word term for Yes Men, why not call yourselves "Sycophants"?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Because "Syncophants" does not mean arse lickers

[–]k0mbaticus 1 point2 points ago

Yes or no?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men -1 points0 points ago

YES! but no! but YES!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

maybe

[–]Haha_MadeYouLook 1 point2 points ago

Are you really the Yes men? Or are you secretly some rich guys who mocked up some proof?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 2 points3 points ago

In reality we work for BPglobalPR!

[–]last5starRESORT 1 point2 points ago

Y'all are great! Love the creative interventions. Done anything with FinSpy or got any ideas about it? Had that shit on my cell and I live in the US!?! SO CRAZY STUPID INVASIVE. Lots to work with.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. Wow! we're new to FinSpy- thanks for the tip!

[–]last5starRESORT 0 points1 point ago

Hey, no problem. I got stories, for sure.

[–]Yarnmaster 1 point2 points ago

Have you ever just broken out in laughter in front of an audience?

What would sooner have you laughing, audience reactions or your own script?

Have you trained to keep a straight face, and if so, how do you do it?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes its hard not to laugh - but most of the time if you are there in front of a big audience being someone you are not, even if you are saying funny things it does not feel funny at the time! No training at straight-face keeping. Is there some available?

[–]Billlbo 1 point2 points ago

I have a question for Mike. How did you like Reed college? As a prospective student, I have been shocked at the amount of profoundly creative and rebellious alumni.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 2 points3 points ago

I loved Reed! Had a great time there. Its not for everyone, but it was for me.

[–]iloveghoti 0 points1 point ago

Reedie here.

Apparently you left your room in ODB in such an impressive state during Reunions 2010, we named our golf cart after you.

Igor is one tough mofo.

[–]AbbyMoriah 0 points1 point ago

Is there any topic or area of interest you'd like to tackle with your activism but haven't? Why? Are there areas/subjects you think are "off limits"?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

We are only interested in doing things that serve the goals of social and environmental justice... ie, doing what is basically right.

[–]GabrielMSharp 0 points1 point ago

What's the most significant long-term good caused by your Yes Men stunts?

Very much enjoyed the film back when you put it on torrents.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Hard to say what the concrete long-term good is. But we do get email from folks all the time who say that they got interested in rebelling because they saw our films. That seems like a long-term difference, one person at a time.

[–]Winterbay 0 points1 point ago

Which of your, for lack of a better word, "stunts" are you most proud of? ANd which do you wish had had a larger impact?

[–]Crohnskid 0 points1 point ago

When did you get the idea for this type of activism?

And, how much do you guys love what you do?

On a final note, you're wonderful! Thank you!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Both Andy and I were doing politically motivate pranks in the 90's. We became the Yes Men by accident – Andy had put up a funny fake website for the WTO, and it got mistaken for the real thing by a conference company. The rest is in our first movie "The Yes Men." (probably on line somewhere, or netflixable or something.)

[–]RonaldMcDonaldsCum 0 points1 point ago

As the others have said, I love your work. Humor and activism is such an exciting idea. I am curious though. How do you support yourselves? How can I contribute to make sure you're feeding yourselves?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

We still have day jobs as university professros... but Please Please Please go to our Kickstarter page! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1194236337/the-yes-men-are-revolting making movies does cost money...

[–]veertamizhan 1 point2 points ago

I have a friend who is from Bhopal.

His family was there during the gas leak. They had a jeep, and so were able to escape in time. A lot of other people from their neighbour hood died.

Loved your Dow stunt.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Thanks – glad to hear your friend got out in time!

[–]MilesColtrane 1 point2 points ago

do you lift

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Only stacks of newspapers, and lately boxes of food: see it in this video: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1194236337/the-yes-men-are-revolting/posts

[–]MilesColtrane 0 points1 point ago

does it stream on 56k

[–]EditsAfterResponse 0 points1 point ago

How do you feel about Yes Man with Jim Carrey having a similar name?

[–]AshuraSpeakman 0 points1 point ago

I have the feeling you know you're referencing the wrong movie.

[–]kickpuncher2 -1 points0 points ago

Yes or no?

[–]cyburai 0 points1 point ago

How often do you get found out early? (I suspect your visibility is making harder and harder to catch your target offguard.) What has happened?

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 1 point2 points ago

Find the response with the word "Exxon" in here. Also "International Web Police." Besides those, it happened at a nanotechnology conference (one of the extras for our last film, and I think it's available on P2P or something) and at the HUD conference near the end of The Yes Men Fix the World. (In those cases, folks just asked for DVDs afterwards. We didn't have any on us.)

[–]cyburai 0 points1 point ago

Ha! Busted, but can we get your DVDs?

[–]scribbling_des 0 points1 point ago

Wow, finally an AMA I can get excited about and I can't think of a good question. So, uh, what is your favorite kind of sandwich?

[–]AshuraSpeakman 1 point2 points ago

If you can't think of a question, get introspective: What do you like most about the Yes Men?

[–]brettchamberlin 1 point2 points ago

What do you see as the advantages of your style of prankster, culture-jamming protest vs. straight direct action/civil disobedience... And how much of a line is there really?

[–]Anotherd81 0 points1 point ago

How do you toe the line between promoting a political cause and promoting your own careers/opportunities?

[–]brettchamberlin 0 points1 point ago

What is the extent of the legal research/prep you do before your events? What are the criminal charges and civil suits which you've faced over the years?

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 1 point2 points ago

We do a ton of research and prep, but not much legal research or prep. We aren't afraid of legal action at this point - we were at first. Search on "lawyers" or what-not in here, there are a few lengthy responses.

[–]DJUrsus 1 point2 points ago

Hi guys! Love your work. A bit of Reddit procedure: could you ask the admins to mark you and Mike's accounts so we readers can more easily spot your responses? Thanks!

[–]OurKarass 0 points1 point ago

Hey, you guys are amazing. Is there any way I can help you? I live in New York and have, as far as I can tell, pretty much the same political ideology as you. I think the two big issues that need more exposure in the media right now are [1] Obama's covert wars in Pakistan and Yemen [2] The wiretapping/monitoring of Americans at the hands of their telecom service providers.

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 1 point2 points ago

Look up our Yes Lab in NYC! www.yeslab.org/nyu

[–]Kelmorgan 0 points1 point ago

Would you say that it's easier or harder to get fake articles/news items taken seriously in today's age when there's so many internet rumors? I would imagine so many media outlets clamoring for the next big event eats up anything you throw at them.

[–]ttimebomb 0 points1 point ago

Have you ever been worried that you might be arrested or sued for any of the stunts you''ve pulled?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

We've been worried, but never arrested for the stunts we do. Its actually very safe... but we had to discover that ourselves.

Thanks for doing this and keep up the good work! You guys are awesome!

Can you describe to me, with your own words, what is it you stand for, also this whole Yes men thing (only heard about it just now) Please say yes :)

[–]Fivezhot 0 points1 point ago

I looked around a bit, still not quite sure excactly what The Yes Men are, I am still thinking of the Jim Carrey movie "Yes man" :D

You guys are amazing; I'm a huge fan and am proud to support your projects and those you endorse on Kickstarter. I know you've covered this briefly before in your films, but could you talk about how, before a stunt, you assess the potential effects it might have to those you are trying to help? E.g., what kind of discussions happened about the victims in Bhopal and how they might react to the news of compensation? What is the process of weighing the risk that some people might be extremely disappointed, or even re-traumatized, by the fake news? (I'm not suggesting this happens - I'm asking about the decisionmaking process beforehand and discussions of the potential for it happening).

Keep on fighting for change in your hilariously and uniquely brilliant ways!

Edit: Word change, added parenthetical sentence at end.

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 2 points3 points ago

With the Bhopal thing, we did recognize it could hurt people, give them false hopes. We discussed what to do with out friends at Greenpeace, and we all decided to go ahead with it because we were sure it would result in more press than another approach, and that the victims in Bhopal - who have been fighting since 1984 for resolution and media attention as a way to achieve that pressure - would understand why we'd done it. They did. (You can see them strangle us in our last movie.)

[–]MarmotChaos 0 points1 point ago

My wife almost cried when they strangled you. She found that to be this touching (no pun intended) emotional climax of the story. Not sure if it was empathy for the victims of that tragedy or that she just likes watching you guys get strangled. In either case, the whole segment was beautiful.

[–]Barmleggy 0 points1 point ago

Do you feel anxiety when you do these incredible pranks? How do you get through it?

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

andy before DOW bbc 1

morning before DOW bbc interview 2

I dunno how he got through it inside his head, but there's the evidence that it was rough!

[–]vmos 0 points1 point ago

How did you keep a straight face when you did that bit with the golden skeleton? Were you expecting someone to stand up halfway through and say "stop that, it's silly" ?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

@42:13 One of the first large capers they pulled off, impersonating the WTO at a textiles conference, no one even asked any questions. I assume they got more and more used to the crickets, since their real audience is you + news viewers and viewers of their pictures.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that was a bit of a challenge! Luckily, we were also crapping our pants, so it was hard to giggle in the middle of that...

[–]MisterOnd 1 point2 points ago

Do you ever say No?

[–]moxanot 2 points3 points ago

cntl + f or cmd +f and type "no"

[–]MisterOnd 0 points1 point ago

I'll take that as a yes.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

YES!

[–]MisterOnd 0 points1 point ago

I'll take that as a no.

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

you too!

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Thanks Much!

[–]MarmotChaos 0 points1 point ago

Do you plan beforehand when to "break" character after being pressed or somehow caught? It looks like you guys keep it going for as long as possible, but pretty much take it as it comes. How much pre-planning do you do in terms of considering contingencies - e.g., we'll do A if they do B.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 1 point2 points ago

Our plan is usually to say in character until there are real police involved. Best to tell them the truth - in our experience they like that. We do lots of if A then B type stuff when we are writing press releases - for the actions themselves, its a bit more improvisational!

[–]MarmotChaos 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the response! One of the funniest things to me is always when some real guy shows up and you cast doubt on his legitimacy. He always ends up looking silly and angry but with little proof ("business cards!") to set the record straight.

[–]whatsonyourface 0 points1 point ago

What's the best thing you almost did?

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 2 points3 points ago

Wow. Good question. That time when we almost hacked into the cochlear implant that allowed Karl Rove to speak through George Bush's puppet head? Does that count? There must be others, just a bit fried!

[–]whatsonyourface 0 points1 point ago

This was you wasn't it!

[–]krulltheking 0 points1 point ago

damn. I heard the Baja Men were doing an AMA. Guess I'll never know who let the dogs out.

[–]mikebonannoThe Yes Men 0 points1 point ago

Should i let the dogs back in? Its cold outside.

[–]helenaheldin 1 point2 points ago

[–]edipeisrex 0 points1 point ago

If you could change one -- and only one -- injustice in the world, what would it be?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

I would change the structure of American political system to a version of community autonomy, maybe considered networked group rule from the bottom up, with a sort of federal law system similar for all the states, but more like reddiquette rules. It's whole design is an injustice to communities and causes so many other injustices at home and abroad.

[–]AndyNemmity 0 points1 point ago

I feel like I would have the confidence and experience to do something like this (as well as the political bent), however I have built a career that I love, and I think there's little chance I could sustain it doing something like this.

Isn't that the rub? Is there an opportunity to help on the backend without being as noticed?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

So what is that career? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What other people would you need on a team to carry out things like this?

The thing is, citizens have time to be citizens and to work. You don't have to dedicate your life to activism to get your grievances noticed (except the knowing how to get them noticed part). If they taught civics in U.S. schools, for example, I think it would include how to get noticed in the media. Join the action switchboard. When it's up and running you'll be able to connect with people that live around you to carry things out, and from there you figure out who will do what and that depends on what you can do and what you're willing to do. http://tmwrk.com/edit-profile

The Yes Men work with people who do the backend. They make the graphics for their performances, etc.

[–]eobet 1 point2 points ago

Were you involved in the BP PR event where they had a small oil well spring a leak on the invited guests, and could you talk about that? Oddly, I can't find the video anymore, or even a mention of it on Google... (maybe I'm using the wrong search terms...)

[–]eobet 0 points1 point ago

Oh, cool, no wonder I couldn't find it, I had the company name wrong. Thanks! I enjoyed that one. And VERY interesting to find out who that old lady was!

[–]DerpMatt 0 points1 point ago

Who is your favorite Pony?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

It's funny, we're planning on teaching mike and andy about the history of my little pony and updating them on hip hop and rap as well. I think they have never seen powerpuff girls, so they don't get it yet.

[–]sanity 0 points1 point ago

Have you ever regretted a stunt, perhaps where you thought you might have embarrassed or inconvenienced someone that didn't deserve it?

A possibly related question: What is the last major political issue where your views changed substantially?

[–]sanity 0 points1 point ago

And as for the second one, depends what you mean by "substantially." We've often discovered whole new dimensions to the issues we've gone after.

I was thinking more along the lines of whether your political opinions have evolved at all. For example, many people tend to get less conspiratorial as they grow older. Most people's political views shift in one way or another.

To put it another way: If you were to have a conversation with yourself of 5 years ago, is there anything you'd disagree on politically?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

Andy replied about regret to another user.

They've mentioned in some of their The Yes Men Are Revolting material that they were really inspired by the Occupy Movement. Apparently they were on the verge of breaking up the band. But then the occupy movement happened, and it revived their hope in organizing people to action.

Relatedly, the Occupy movement also helped Chris Hedges become not so depressing again.

[–]bigavz 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I was in Michael's class and he showed a documentary film done by one of his friends that I've been looking for for ages! It's about a punk kid who starts working for a mail order publishing or distribution house in the nineties. There is no such thing as a punk rock yes! I just need the name! some closure! It was very influential.

[–]Andy_BichlbaumThe Yes Men[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes, great film! The Target Shoots Back by Chris Wilcha.

[–]bigavz 0 points1 point ago

Thank you! There were only a few dozen copies made iirc, I'll have to bother him next time I visit. Good luck with your next film, and I hope the inflatable uterus makes an appearance.

[–]CTypo 0 points1 point ago

Will you guys ever consider doing "The YES Dance"?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

I'll try it next time I'm at a dance party

[–]kingoff00ls 0 points1 point ago

Why not raise awareness for problems that people don't know about? Like seriously, BP, exxon, George W. Bush, I am pretty sure we are aware of those as well as we know breast cancer exists.

I don't know, for seeing you just now, it seems you want publicity like a talk show host and are harping on songs that everyone has heard.

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

Part of the problem is that everyone knows about it, and because of that, people think there is nothing we can do about it. The reason they comment on things people know about, is that often people don't know the full story, don't think they can do anything about it, or no one else is criticizing these people or saying what everyone is thinking. That's how a republic COULD run, but ours resorts to crony capitalism or oligarchic corporate rule. But we still have the ability to use free speech as our leverage. It's easier to win leverage on issues that everyone has heard about.

http://tmwrk.com/edit-profile join this so you join the network to get your issues known too

Also, many of the issues they go for have only become more well known after they got publicity for it. For example, the Bhopal disaster had receded in many people's minds, and their hoax renewed the effort to help them. Everyone else had given up that DOW would ever do anything about it. Obviously, they still haven't, but people ARE working against them and trying ever so hard to make it happen.

[–]kingoff00ls 0 points1 point ago

I see! thanks for replying! I am always worried when such groups form they can commonly be called a Michael Moore clone. I seriously don't like his brand of activism. I had a bit of cringe factor when I saw you could also be such. Seeing how you actually answer my question out of at least 200 and it wasn't a fun one. It would seem that your cause is of some worth to you. Thanks for your time.

Patented Michael Moore interviewing: "lets walk in and try to question the CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation. Oh he is busy running said company? He is evil and covering this thing up obviously"

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

Michael Moore in my opinion really went after important issues. But I think he was divisive because he didn't grant people much catharsis, offended certain people in his political interpretations. His approach is through direct criticism, very scathing (though accurate) questioning. I learned a lot from his documentaries. But I think many people get offended before they listen.

The difference with the Yes Men is that they connect with the audience first through something everyone likes: hoaxes, antics, humor. And they DO things that show a different possibility and film that possibility and the viewer can see how others would react if that really happened. That's so important because Moore's films can make people angry or feel desperate approaching problems by revealing the problem and proving that it's a problem whereas The Yes Men try to approach things by understanding that something's a problem then filming possible ways to fix problems.

A way Moore is better is that he really dredges up everything and isn't afraid of asking any question. Bowling for Columbine for example really undid all the complaining about video games and music being the cause of school shootings and violence. He revealed why people were scapegoating about violence, and who. A lot of the reasons are part of the same problems that the yes men films try to talk about. He is a lot more into educating people about how problems happen, why they continue and why they exist. He's more dramatic too. You just gotta take the parts that are maybe over the top with a grain of salt!

I try to not get offended, and to see why certain people think the way they do. People don't believe Moore because they don't like him! But you can learn a lot from his films.

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

But totally, there are SO many issues people should know about and know they actually have the leverage or ability to say or do something about it. That's why they built the Yes Lab and are trying to expand that as a social tool/web application in the Action Switchboard. That way lesser known problems can be treated by those who are local to them, or more pinpointed. The Yes Men is a very small team! It's amazing that their comment on these issues has floated up to the surface of discussion in the first place. With greater clout, comes greater ability to make lesser known issues more known and gain publicity along with the popular ones that people will be entertained by and will be interested in.

[–]kingoff00ls 0 points1 point ago

Ah fuck it, you guys convinced even the cynic in me that you're legit. I actually do I have a problem but its not a social one that has received any press. It also lacks a villain for someone to hate.

In kansas City there is a group or corporation that Dr. Richie Hastings is a part of. The problem is, people don't know how to actively solve problems. They know how to memorize data and do well on tests but employers are finding that they have to train a 4 year BA kid on just about everything because they lack any real "common sense" (i guess thats the word) There is a certain kind of intelligence in the world and it is dying in that mans opinion as well as mine.

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

It is a social one! It has received press in education. It's an education problem in the united states. There are teachers who try to fight it but kids aren't given enough respect, taught enough about current events, just a fake history or non-functioning worldview.

This is actually my view of problems as well. It's something I struggled with in school. I wanted a mentor, I wanted more challenge. But I found it was my college experience that was crippled. A person's personal curiosity usually dictates how well they learn without being led by an engaging teacher. So I still got a lot out of it. But education shouldn't be so restrained as it is. But when you research who runs the school boards, who dictates curricular changes, etc, you find out why these changes don't happen. It's easier not to educate people, because if they know too much, they may depose a bad government or not participate actively in consumerism. it's complex!

stick with the yes men, and similar projects, because you're right that it's something that needs addressing. i would assert that the yes men films are lessons in civics! if we show their movies in classes...there are no swears, ect. not even a specific political leaning, just about criminals vs citizens.

[–]LustMorm 0 points1 point ago

Do you consider yourselves as fine artists? I'm in grad school right now for photography, and I address problems in current social issue in my work. I feel like I am constantly fighting the idea of art vs. activism vs. entertainment. Any thoughts? thanks.

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts are that they really found the seam where the three meet. For me, my favorite fine art has always been that which is entertaining because it goes against taboos and historically, fine art that has changed things or introduced people into a new way of thinking, of consciousness.

The Yes Men have really defined the process as a quest to seek how ones own already-possessed skills can be used towards these three ends. Their work is obviously activism, because they plan their targets out of political awareness. Their work is entertaining because they play pranks, have a juvenile sense of humor, and because they don't take themselves too seriously. The foremost part of any of their work is in the ridiculousness of what they planned, they really stage things that would never happen, and this is what's so entertaining, to see the coalesced reality of a crazy idea that people wish were true, but never seem to be. What do you expect, and how can you fulfill it artfully? Their powerpoints and performances are their art, their activism is in identity correction, their entertainment is pulling off and filming and producing film of their most audacious ideas and arguing where no one is allowed to argue on a public forum.

I read somewhere on AMA from i think the Walking Mars people that you should do a triple loop venn diagram : art v activism v entertainment and first do the projects in the center. You won't be happy unless you feel like you're DOING what you want to be doing. So try to do all these as much as you can.

Please come to Florida and punk Voldemort. Please, please, please!!!

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

http://www.crowleypoliticalreport.com/2011/02/rick-scott-the-lord-voldemort-of-florida.html

This guy?

What don't you like about what he's doing? What do you wish he were doing? Have you tried to understand his position?

Perhaps you could learn how he thinks well enough to spoof him yourself? My cursory understanding is that he thinks he is fixing the budget of Florida by cutting its spending, by cutting government offices and employee's jobs. He believes that the private sector should handle the things that the government currently handles, either because he thinks they would do it more efficiently or because he thinks the government of Florida favors certain companies?

So what do you think is outrageous about that thinking? Why is it so evil or crazy? What is he really saying when he says this stuff?

[–]dman24752 0 points1 point ago

I was a part of your Shell action a few months back with Dorli Rainey. It was really fun and I wish the ruse went on a little longer than it did. How much planning did you folks put into the planning of the event? Will this action be in The Yes Men Are Revolting?

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

Yep! There are a few videos already on youtube of the planning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InL4ONJh9fA

[–]Endsville 0 points1 point ago

The first time I saw you was your WTO speech in which you donned the Blowup Golden Cock Suit. It was brilliant and I was reduced to tears of laughter. The looks on the audience faces, and seeing them trying to hold it together and seem professional was priceless. It seems some of them were good humored, and many were just sticks in the mud.

My question to you is, how do you keep your composure? Knowing your there under false pretenses, that your audience is always hostile to you, you guys always seem to be so relaxed. What is really in your mind in that situation? Are you nervous? Sweaty? Breathing heavily? Or do you take it all as one big joke and are comfortable that nothing really bad is going to happen to you?

Anyway, you guys do great work, and one day I hope to be a CEO walking around my office in my Blowup Golden Cock Suit.

[–]DvineINFEKT 0 points1 point ago

Hey Andy and Mike - I don't have much of a burning question for you guys, but I do want to say thank you. The Yes Men Fix The World was a huge step in shaping my outlook on the world that, yes, we CAN fix the world as individuals and truly inspired me.

Thank you for that.

My only real question is when is the next time you guys will be in Chicago? Thank you for your exhibition at Columbia College two years ago :) I never got the opportunity to properly say thank you.

[–]OChrome -1 points0 points ago

"The Yes Men operate under the mission statement of telling the truth and exposing lies.[citation needed] They create and maintain fake websites similar to ones they intend to spoof, which have led to numerous interview, conference, and TV talk show invitations."

The Cybermen seem a bit better, they aren't drones, but they have no emotions, but they can retain their mental system of logic that they'd previously possessed I guess? I didn't read extensively on what they do to you, but yeah, the Borg seem boring to be.

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

Where will you volunteer? You can learn something from any experience, depending on what you want to know about it. If you think you can get something out of it, choose what you're most passionate about learning. No single thing will help a post-grad except his own curiosity.

What is your opinion of conservative activists, such as O'Keefe from the ACORN tapes fame, that do similarly attention-grabbing work as you do (but for the side of evil)?

[–]1wombat 1 point2 points ago

As far as revolutionary organizations in the West go, they are usually dominated by white men. Feminist critiques say that these type of organizations still promote the status quo because of the quieting effect on people of color and women. It is clear that you probably would not have been as successful if you had been 2 women of color (for example) due to inherent social inequality built into the current system.

How do you respond to such critiques and what do you do to promote the voices of those who are often ignored?

[–]keanureevesnose 0 points1 point ago

[–]xsaiph 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for doing this, and for your work.

Well, most of it. I was hoping you could explain the benefit of the "Arctic Ready" web prank. I felt like that ended up doing the opposite of what environmentalists want. I saw so many people perpetuating it, even cropping out the link so it couldn't be deduced as a prank...basically my experience was that people with higher social consciousness either ignored it (if they were pro-fossil fuels) or looked like buffoons when they shared their outrage or mockery for Shell. Which of course undermines someone's credibility if they are an environmentalist because if they can believe this hoax, they probably believe all the other ones too. And as it was really only forwarded by people who wanted to mock Shell, it was almost totally harmful.

Your thoughts and the reactions/results you've seen?

I recently saw your show up at Columbia College. Very cool. How do you decide what materiality your next project will take? For instance, with your survival suit, how did you decide upon that physically as a way to address climate and social issues?

Have you ever been arrested?

[–]MoonBearzzz 0 points1 point ago

I don't even know you who are, (not to be offensive), why should want to know who you guys are?

[–]halezerg 1 point2 points ago

I have a hard time explaining how a, as you put it, community autonomy, ground up (see?) political system would ideally work. I tend to say direct democracy, but the assumptions behind this term still don't explicate the importance of local community over federal government. My question: is there any book(s) you read, any philosopher, experiences, association of ideas perhaps, that led you to your political beliefs?

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

This paper is a result of my research of political and social structure from the approach of education.

And this paper informs that, but is also a design report for a simulation teaching that environmental destruction is a natural process.

My experiences in learning Moral Development and Anarchism+Democracy come from professor Bill Puka who has taught me so much about how people interact in a society and how people think about politics, and about issues.

My idea about direct democracy from the ground up comes from an ideal I have about how I wish to interact with people. In my opinion we can forget the political system, corporations, etc and strengthen ourselves by figuring out ways to meet each others needs in local areas. In my idea, social interaction and learning dictates economics (which is the same as saying morality dictates economics). People will still need to eat and be entertained, I just think they should look to the people around them, or through the internet to find people that are similar to them. Bill Puka anarchism theory says that anarchistic society will always fail, so we must still have democracy. I like that. We all need internet access, which can be community based or neighborhood based rather than just personal ownership based. We vote and decide on issues with people that live nearby to us or share the same resources as us. The world is divided into climates and ecosystems, so it will be simple enough to decide which communities should talk to each other. Of course these change, as should leaders rotate.

hahah, sorry, long post. I would have to write a whole 100 pages on it to explicate enough. But it starts with people deciding to create their own communities, talking to people around them, understanding their ecosystem. This isn't really yes men affiliated, this is my personal research. --Billy Halibut

my mom and dad, my brother: my mom has always been a champion of good community at her office and in her personal life. my dad is rebellious, compassionate and idealistic; injustice makes his blood boil; he is an example of a person our competitive, cutthroat society did not serve at all. my brother as well, he has been in all kinds of assisted education programs because he did not think the way public school teaches; he's smarter than me but fell through the cracks and wasn't generally accepted by our socio political system. For them I was curious about any of this. And of course all my friends; I was lucky to have very critical thinking friends, who knew a lot and could debate till they were purple.

I think all I need now, is a nice suit and some corporate phone numbers.

That's exactly right!! You got it. Damn, that was easy.

[–]moxanot 0 points1 point ago

Personally I think religion has enough detractors. I think we often laud science as its own religious divinity, and it can cause just as many devoted extremists to forget they're humans and drive the battering ram of ideological brute force.

[–]markesh0 0 points1 point ago

True, I was speaking from a more financial point of view. They collect a lot of money for "helping". One would wonder where all that money goes ?

Some of the "leaders" don't seem to be much more than professional fundraisers.

[–]moxanot 1 point2 points ago

Oh I gotcha. Yeah some of these charities like Pirg and others that seem to be helping, often their CEOs are very wealthy and they have basically become a lobby, trying to fight corporations the same way the corporations change our legislation. Not exactly better to distort our legal system even if it's for an opposing cause, or even an environmental cause. Our democracy should just work better. Or it should split up into networked states (of course those are just drops in the bucket according to all the issues i could list with either system). But sorry, tangent.

I think they are more knowledgable about political fundraising and corporations that directly cause destruction. Even if they're embezzling their money, etc, knowing what they spend it on would be the first step before the yes men or their action switchboard would have an appropriate goal. The scientific/corporate community is also easier to criticize because supposedly they are based in the philosophy of science and political or economic theory that supposedly should be debatable, often religion is merely a question of a person's personal morality....or in the case of the organizations, their officially published morality.

[–]markesh0 1 point2 points ago

Right, but unfortunately they are very well protected, legally, from any kind of intrusion. It would be pretty hard to get a look at their financials, or anything like that, without having someone inside the company/church.

Most of the smaller ones I doubt do it, but there are a few big ones, that have ad campaigns, tv shows, and even tv networks, that may not be totally legit.

So have you gotten Jim Carrey on board to make a sequel yet or was it just a one time thing?

If you can beat me in a hoola-hoop competition, maybe we can become friends. After that, maybe if I had $500 extra and you still needed it, I'd be happy to give you it, especially for a cool reason.
