Safe to Drink?

Australia's water supply is under threat from irreversible actions by the Coal Seam Gas industry. The simple fact is that shatterring the earth beneath us to extract one resource can never be done without polluting our most valuable resource: water. However without individual actions by each of us, generations of Australians could be left questioning whether their water is 'Safe to Drink?'

Let's change that future. Call your local MP to register your disapproval. If it's your first time calling, that's even more powerful, and you should mention it. For many of us it will be the first time we've ever called a politician, but Coal Seam Gas extraction is rousing many of us into action who've never acted before, so join us.

  • Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world.
  • Australians are increasingly used to water restrictions and told to be 'Water Wise'.
  • Coal Seam Gas (CSG) extraction depends on destructive techniques that threaten large sections of our underground water table. It is not 'Water Wise'.
  • there are currently no regulations to enforce long-term monitoring of water levels or quality after a CSG project finishes.
  • even if problems with CSG activities are found, it will already be too late.
  • if an aquifer is polluted by CSG, it could take thousands of years to recover.
  • the United States has a longer history of CSG: there are now thousands of documented cases of drinking water being contaminated.
  • CSG seems to symbolise the triumph of reckless, short-term greed over sound long-term management of our resources. It's an issue that should make anyone reconsider how they will vote.
