Yes Men: Davos Breakthrough! World Leaders See the Light, Vow to End World Poverty Once and for All
Davos, Switzerland, 27 January 2010 - On the eve of the 40th anniversary annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, several key world leaders have pledged to develop, by the end of this year's meeting, a cogent and actionable plan to end global poverty.
"In
light of the recent tragedy in Haiti, which was already on the brink
due to free-market policies, it is clear that taking a new tack to end
poverty is morally necessary," said Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab. (See video here.).
In a series of pre-recorded policy statements, which can be viewed on the Davos Annual Meeting 2010 website, President Sarkozy of France, Chancellor Merkel of Germany, CEO Patricia Woertz of Archer Daniels Midland, and several other political and business leaders note the failures of a system that has been more intent on using poor countries as supply-houses for raw materials than in bringing them out of poverty.
"Today, we are at a moment of societal crisis when dramatic change is inevitable," said Chancellor Merkel. "The only question is: will we help to usher in that change, or will we be its victims?" (See video here.)
The leaders support a refreshingly simple plan that will end poverty, protect the environment, and allow developing countries to choose their own futures, unchained from onerous debt obligations and unbalanced trade policies.
|
"Nobody wants a catastrophe," said Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "Canadians don't want that reputation." (See video here.)
Above all, the new policy statements are indicative of significant change of direction by some of the most powerful people in the world. The testimonials augur a watershed week during which the leading powers of Davos will be striking at the heart of policies and structures that, while contributing to economic growth for businesses, have created the conditions for poverty and have threatened the very survival of humankind.
The Forum's bold change of direction comes after an exhaustive internal survey by the Forum's Leadership Council, as well as extensive consultation with anti-poverty leaders and campaigners in the developing world. Among the statistics presented:
- In 1820, the gap between the richest and poorest country was 3 to 1. In 1950, it was 35 to 1. Today, it is nearly 80 to 1 (source).
- In 1970, 434 million people were suffering from malnutrition. Today, that number is approaching 900 million (source).
- Since 1960, Third World countries have suffered a 70% drop in the price of agricultural exports compared to manufactured imports (source).
- The developing world spends $13 on debt repayment for every $1 it receives in grants (source).
- It is estimated that USD$11.5 trillion of untaxed "black money" is being held in global "tax havens" (source), with as much as USD$1 trillion in unmarked Swiss bank accounts (source). The United Nations has estimated the cost of ending world hunger at about USD$30 billion a year (source).
- The World Bank reports that spreading global economic crisis is set to trap up to 53 million more people in poverty in developing countries, bringing the total of those living on less than $2 a day to over 1.5 billion (source).
Professor Schwab noted that the need to end poverty is felt especially strongly this year, with an earthquake-ravaged Haiti foremost on people's minds. A series of protracted pre-conference discussions were held by Forum members in response to the recent gaffe by the International Monetary Fund, in which the Fund's loan to Haiti, bearing a number of onerous conditions, became the target of popular uproar, forcing the Fund to commit the monies in the form of a grant instead.
In a refreshing taste of things to come, Forum members resolved to supplement the IMF grant with a much larger, multi-billion dollar unconditional grant to Haiti, to be excised from the more than USD$60 billion that New York's financial sector awarded themselves in bonuses this year.
"It is by now universally understood that many of our institutions were directly responsible for the collapse of housing value, not to mention massive unemployment and misery, in the United States and much of the rich world," said Lloyd Blanfein, Chair of the New York Financial Caucus, and current Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs.
"But it is equally true that we in the financial sector bear much responsibility for Haiti's poverty, which has made it impossible for them to even begin to deal with the current tragedy," added Blanfein. "The least we can do to repay our moral debt is to immediately lift up the collapsed Haitian economy, and not by making usurious loans through the IMF, either."

Show AllGood Afternoon,
Sorry for just landing in your midst this way, seems like we're living a yet to be created Tom Robbins novel.
I read " 10 Ways To Stop Corporate Dominance of Politics" by Fran Korten this morning in Commondreams.org
I wrote two posts to the article, trying to describe what CITIZEN CENTRAL is and what can be done in resolving many issues brought into our consciousness by the dedicated people past and present who form the Progressive Circle.
TO THE POINT: The only way current activities of political chaos and environmental degradation will change(before we reach the point of no return) is :
1. the planet reaches Critical Mass and we suddenly have an Enlightened Humanity on the Planet
(my personal hope) or :
2.Working within the existing political system, WE HAVE THE NUMBERS!
Anything else and, to coin a phrase, we are pissing in the wind.
The time in NOW, EITHER WE ALL UNITE UNDER A COMMON BANNER WITH DEFINED VALUES AND OBJECTIVES, OR WE DISSOLVE INTO THE DIVIDED,SEPERATED,IMPOTENTENT GOOD INTENTIONS PROGRESSIVE CIRCLE WE HAVE BEEN SWIMMING IN.
Numbers, what does this mean?????
It means we make it easy for ourselves,if you agree on the objectives of CITIZEN CENTRAL then join, add your name and zip code , which means your vote is proxy to CITIZEN CENTRAL.
The objectives:
IN order of priorities.
Assist the citizens of this country who are currently homeless and hungry. And develop the mechanisms to eliminate these problems.
Assist the global organizations, with tangible resources, that have been dealing with world hunger and human suffering.
If this means adding U.N. combat resources to insure aid is going where its needed , SO BE IT
Insuring that U.S. foreign policy is directed to solving these issues, as opposed to creating them.
Ask the world for forgiveness where our Country engaged in crimes against humanity, these crimes were not done in our name.
We will make every effort to make amends where possible, and promise that the Government of the United States will never
participate in this behavior again.
Universal Health ........in a previous post, a group of organizations were suggested to develop the nuts and bolts of Universal Health
Evolving beyond capitalism to accommodate the new economic realities and environmental constraints to "consumerism"
Understand that Government resourses will be allocated to provide for the economic well being of its citizen.
Be realistic in creating deficits, using resourses to bring the infrastructure (in its broadest interpretation when describing infrastructure) into twenty-first century realities,( education, health-care, retirement, social services, energy consumption,
transportation systems, redefining what "work" is. etc etc.
The eight hundred pound Gorella of 'DEFICIETS" becomes meaningless when pared to human extinction.
Believe me those that live a hundred years from now will thank us for leaving a deficit along with a surviving planet .
THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF DEFICIETS IN MEANINGLESS, OUTSIDE OF CAPITIALISM.
BESIDES WHO SAYS MONEY WILL EXIST IN TWENTY FIVE YEARS!!!!
With the recommendations of the scientists associated with global warming, start implementing specific actions limiting the emissions of carbon gases.
With respect to resolving the impasse between "first and third world countries" the first world must contribute to the sustainability, and livability's of "third world populations". Capitalism is not the model to achieve equality in terms of satisfying basic human needs.
Freedom ,Human Rights, and survivability within each cultural variation, and the preservation of these cultural variations should be the goal, assuming each culture is in agreement.
Okay , I've gone beyond what is necessary to create CITIZEN CENTRAL.
Trust that the details exist to make it all happen.
The whole collective creation is all in "SUNSHINE", IN OTHER WORDS TOTALLY TRANSPARENT.. We all get to vote up or down in implementation.
Okay we need a web site to accommodate three hundred million people for this country.
We also need to add fifty pieces of data for each of the three hundred million people.
The one billion dollar ten question, tell you nothing census, needs an upgrade. Say fifty questions should give us enough data to make decisions on allocation of resourses within the country.
If we can get the phone companies to assist in something meaningful , as opposed to assisting "THE OLD GOVERNMENT" in
destroying the Constitution via the patriots act.
We could get a census within a month.
Ja, ja, ja, finally they woke up,
but what does it take to change ?
- Obama style,- Calitos Way ?
? SHOW-ME-THE-MONEY style ?
How many wake-up calls do we need to read the writings
on the walls, connect the dots between the Headlines ?
Of course, economy & ecology belong together and are
interdependent, as anything else in this world and on this earth.
And just when we gave up the hope for an ‘End of Insanety’,
Mother Earth gave us another sign & warning:
-“I am still alive & kicking, wake up and listen carefully.
As long as you can not grow money on trees, you have nothing
to corrupt the constant motion of life,
get real and respect the hands which feed you !"
Listen, Haiti might be a different answer to Copenhagen
than we expected ?
Catastrophes like this, wars, famine & epidemics are just
symptoms of a deeper rooted imbalance on hand.
What can we expect from a ‘Linear Culture’ with a hierarchic
order of discrimination, segregation & limitation, totally addicted
to Growth & Expansion.
Man-made or ‘Act of God’,
destruction & creation are the dynamic of Life.
The simple questions are, how do we maintain our balance
in this dynamic, and how do we cope with this, what do we learn
from all of this and how can we make it sustainable for us,
how do we adapt and fit-into it;
what is our response-ability here & now?
When will we see the Events unfolding
in the Context to the Ideas behind it ?
A society, collectively infested with a mental disease
of ‘linear thinking’, is ultimately trapped in concepts of reward &
punishment, success & regret, good & evil, black & white,
life & death… - a perception, which is in disharmony
with themselves and the environment.
Haiti is consequently just a taste of what will happen to all of us,
sooner or later…
-all of us who Secretly attract, or openly Believe in the facts & ‘Laws’
of a Beginning & End, will eventually face their own projection,
their ‘Truth’, the ultimately finish of their race to their Garden Eden…
-just hoping that they sold us the right ticket to pass the gatekeepers,
and that there is a ‘free-market’ economy in Heaven !?
Watch what you wish for, be aware what you hope for !
- Bottled water, conditioned air, genetically corrupted food,
happyness on Prosac or ‘clean’ money…
- are not sustainable solutions for Haiti or any other problem on hand!
- We still need a fundamental & complete paradigm shift,
not more of the same old, same old…
When will we learn that LIFE will sustain all our affords of destruction,
that NATURE is stronger than all our silly weapons of hi-tech !
No decision made at fancy Conferences, no new laws passed by
powerful institutions or more affirmations by high-ranking
economists can get this runaway Linear Culture off track.
This culture will ultimately crash into its own definition of Armageddon !
Just simple choices, made by each of us individually, can overcome
these fundamental dysfunctions in life and initiate the healing
process we all collectively need.
- to free our minds of discrimination & ignorance and overcome
this mental disease of a Linear Culture incl. the numbness of hope.
- to live in peace & harmony WITH Mother Nature, be a part of
all Creation and respect all Life-forms - Here & Now
- to join the river of life, become the energy of the water itself.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Or choose to continue our war against everybody & everything which
resists the restrictions & limitations of our hierarchic Order;
- or escalate our fight against Fear & Death with Growth & Expansion,
him justifying our torture & rape of man & earth with laws & religion.
- or hang on to your substitute-satisfactions which is constantly creating
new addictions of consumption & success, but at the same time
continues to deny our other brothers & sisters free access to the
common gifts of creation.
When will we understand that LIFE goes on…
-with or without us !
And then there is the constant mantra of “God bless…” this & that!
What do they mean? Hasn't their God blessed them enough ?…
-blessed the bombs & canons of world war I & II ?…
-Our Boys in Afghanistan & Iraq with inscriptions on gun-sights ?…
-or just bless our markets with more growth & expansion,
and Americas ‘modern’ border to keep ‘the Others’ out and our pockets full?
-and maybe the millions of woman & children in Afghanistan, Congo, Darfur,
Ethiopia, Iraq, Liberia, Pakistan, Somalia, Zimbabwe…
screeming for a helping hand every day since they are blessed with life…
-And you, are you blessed, and when will be the time that you get dammed ?
What a pity !
My prayer is:
……please let the healing process begin, give us the Insight & Vision
to recognize our interdependence & interaction with the great
Ecosystems of Nature and let us not make the same mistakes
we did so many times before.
Awaken our ‘Sense of Wisdom’ to learn & understand the
complex patterns of life.
Open our Imagination & Intuition and give us Inspiration when we
face the hypocrites & opportunists, these oligarchs & bankster and
all their marionettes who got us into this mess in the first place.
Let us take the chances of today and develop alternative political &
economical structures & concepts, new systems which include,
blend & harmonize eco-nomy with eco-logy !
Thank you for your time and let us find solace & peace in less & slow.

A speech by "Politicians" therefore it has to be the truth.
YES!
The Yes Men have purposely issued a statement in "bad taste" to elicit just the reaction that I had tears of joy and then disappointment that the story was bogus.Matti it is all about raising consciousness.
peace
To me, that's like "raising awareness" of breast cancer.
I mean, who the hell ISN'T "aware" by now?
So, who the hell isn't "conscious" of what the Global Corporatists are about?
Or, given the doubtful prospect that anyone who isn't by now would actually be swayed by Yes Men antics (ha!), why do the "consciousness raisers" actually demonstrate a rather LOW level of consciousness on this issue themselves?
If what you are trying to do is point out the incredibleness of the Global Corporatists actually giving a damn about people as people instead of consumers, why don't you slip in SOMETHING that hints that you yourself are aware that the WEC is NOT who we should be looking toward for action on this?
Why not have Schwab or one of the others say that they will be working with the UN General Assembly, various South-South integration movements like ALBA or the World Social Forum on this? Like a "those are the experts, we're just the money men" sorta thing?
All one can take away from this article is that the creators somehow think the WEC SHOULD be taking such action that is completely outside of its purview.
I'm sorry, but it seems to me like petulant rich kids whining to Daddy that he should be nicer to the peasants instead of joining with the peasants to overthrow Daddy's unjust Rule.
I consider 40-years plus of raising consciousness sufficient, now I would like to see some organization amongst those now conscious to actually get something we want DONE.
I loved the Yes Men when they were satirical players at the edge of a real movement against Corporatist-style Globalization. But now that that movement has gone into a coma in the U.S., they seem just like the Onion or Jon Stewart to me:
Pressure-release valves on the social outrage of the Youth and those desiring change.
Maybe I am being to harsh, but one year of everybody fighting (1999-2000) followed by ten years of those same people bitching and making jokes (2000-2010) has gotten me a little irked at this sort of thing.
-matti.
I'm assuming that the Yes Men byline indicates that this is a joke?
Don't really see the "funny" here myself.
Except for the very dark humor that attends the fact that web-lefties would actually be looking toward the anti-democratic World Economic Forum for such initiatives -however cynically and skeptically.
Maybe instead of crypto-lamenting the fact that the Corporatists of the world don't give a fig about egalitarian distribution of even basic needs through the medium of such "funny" satires as this, we SHOULD be organizing people in a struggle to retake our Democratic institutions and thereby steer the proper group -THE UNITED NATIONS- toward acheiving such goals.
In other words, does pointing out that OTHER people are not part of the solution -with such "jokes" as this- really a substitute for being a part of the solution OURSELVES?
'Cause I see a lot of cynical humor and "oh well, waddayagonnado?" attitudes nowadays, but not much working to change things.
-matti.
