Dow Jones Newswires mistakenly published a fake press release that purported to be from Bank of America Corp. (BAC) but instead was distributed by an unknown party.

The fake release claimed Bank of America had launched a campaign seeking public input on how to run the bank. The release also falsely claimed it was distributed by Business Wire.

Dow Jones Newswires published the fake press release and a headline at about 9:30 a.m. EDT. At 11:07 a.m. EDT, Dow Jones Newswires published a blog post from The Wall Street Journal's Deal Journal that reported the press release was fake. The press release and the headline subsequently were removed from Dow Jones's archival system.

Dow Jones regrets the error.
